Rays' Taylor Walls: Back in action Sunday

Walls (groin) will start at shortstop and bat seventh Sunday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Walls sat out the previous three games due to groin soreness but is back in the lineup for Sunday's series finale. The 28-year-old has a .501 OPS through 45 games this season and is in the midst of a 2-for-25 slump.

  • Trevor Story SS | BOS

Red Sox's Trevor Story: Bowing out of starting nine

Story is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles.

Story will get a breather after he started both legs of Saturday's doubleheader, going hitless with two strikeouts over six at-bats. He's 14-for-111 (.126) with just two extra-base hits over the last 28 games. David Hamilton will spell Story at shortstop.

  • Corey Seager SS | TEX

    Rangers' Corey Seager: Nearing return

Seager (hamstring) faced live pitching Saturday and is expected to be activated off the 10-day injured list during a homestand that begins Monday, MLB.com reports.

The homestand runs from Monday to the following Sunday, so that's still a fairly wide window. With injuries piling up for the Rangers -- Joc Pederson (hand) just joined Evan Carter (quadriceps) on the IL -- Seager's bat is needed in the lineup sooner rather than later.

  • Tigers' Kevin McGonigle: Healthy again at High-A

McGonigle (ankle) has gone 2-for-7 with two doubles, three walks and one run in three games since being activated from High-A West Michigan's 7-day injured list Tuesday.

The middle infielder sprained his right ankle in his season debut April 4 and missed nearly seven weeks of action before getting activated. McGonigle was cleared to rejoin the Tigers' Midwest League affiliate after he completed a six-game rehab assignment at Single-A Lakeland, during which he produced a .235/.350/.353 slash line over 20 plate appearances.

  • Trey Sweeney SS | DET

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Taking seat Sunday

Sweeney is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.

After starting six straight games, Sweeney will hit the bench while southpaw Logan Allen toes the rubber for Cleveland. Zach McKinstry will get the nod at shortstop Sunday, but Javier Baez could end up settling in as the primary platoon mate for Sweeney once the veteran is no longer needed in the outfield.

  • Jacob Wilson SS | ATH

Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Gets on base four times

Wilson went 3-for-5 with a double, a walk and an RBI in Saturday's 9-6 extra-innings loss to the Phillies.

Wilson has four multi-hit efforts over his last six games, including Tuesday's contest when he exited early with a minor forearm injury. He's gone 9-for-22 (.409), but his double Saturday was just his second extra-base hit in that span. The shortstop's three-hit effort Saturday has him up to a .342 batting average this season, and he's added an .857 OPS, five home runs, four stolen bases, 11 doubles, 27 RBI and 27 runs scored over 50 contests.

  • Jorge Mateo SS | BAL

Orioles' Jorge Mateo: Swipes two bags across doubleheader

Mateo went a combined 1-for-4 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run across both games of a doubleheader split against the Red Sox on Saturday.

Mateo began Game 1 on the bench but entered as a pinch runner in the eighth inning, reaching second on a stolen base before striking out in his lone plate appearance in the 10th. He got the start in center field in the nightcap and played a key role on offense, drawing a walk in the ninth inning before stealing second base again and subsequently coming around to score the decisive run on a Dylan Carlson double. Mateo is slashing just .209/.244/.279 on the season with no home runs and only one RBI through 45 plate appearances, but he's been able to make some impact with his speed, notching nine thefts on 10 attempts.

  • Anthony Volpe SS | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Collects three hits Saturday

Volpe went 3-for-6 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 13-1 win over Colorado.

Volpe was one of four Yankee batters to log three hits in Saturday's rout. He brought Trent Grisham home on an RBI infield single in the fifth frame before adding to the Yankees' lead with an RBI double in the eighth. Volpe has reached base safely in five consecutive games and has gone 6-for-19 (.316) with three RBI over that span.

  • Marcelo Mayer SS | BOS

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Called up, debuting Game 2

The Red Sox selected Mayer's contract from Triple-A Worcester, and he will start at third base and bat sixth in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Mayer was informed earlier in the day that he was getting called up to the majors to take the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by Alex Bregman (quad), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Mayer will make his major-league debut in Saturday's nightcap and is expected to be used across multiple positions in the infield. He has an .807 OPS with two steals, nine homers and 43 RBI across 193 plate appearances in Triple-A this season.

  • Taylor Walls 3B | TB

Rays' Taylor Walls: Still out of lineup

Walls (groin) is not in the Rays' starting lineup against the Blue Jays on Saturday.

Walls will be out of the starting lineup for a third straight game due to groin soreness, though he did enter Friday's game as a pinch runner. Jose Caballero will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Saturday's contest.
