  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Logs two hits Wednesday

Hernaiz went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's loss against Seattle. Hernaiz collected a pair of singles, one in the third inning and another in the seventh frame, marking his sixth multi-hit effort of the campaign. The infielder entered the 2026 season in a reserve role but has operated as the Athletics' primary shortstop since Jacob Wilson (shoulder) landed on the injured list May 12. Across his past 15 contests, Hernaiz is slashing .348/.400/.391 with two doubles, two RBI, six runs and a stolen base.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Twelve-game starting streak ends

Hernaiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Alika Williams will pick up his first start for the Athletics since being acquired last weekend while Hernaiz retreats to the bench for the series finale in San Diego. Hernaiz had started at shortstop in each of the Athletics' last 12 games, going 12-for-36 (.333 average) with one stolen base, six runs and two RBI during that stretch.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Scores twice Tuesday

Hernaiz went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk in Tuesday's 14-6 win over the Angels. Hernaiz got in on the action as the Athletics tallied a season high in runs, scoring twice before adding an RBI single in the ninth inning. Since Jacob Wilson (shoulder) landed on the injured list May 12, Hernaiz has stepped in as the primary shortstop and performed admirably. Over the past eight games, he has gone 10-for-25 (.400) with a double, an RBI and five runs scored.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Logs three hits in win

Hernaiz went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Cardinals. Hernaiz looked to be losing his grip on a starting role at third base last week, but the absence of Jacob Wilson (shoulder) has opened up shortstop for the foreseeable future. Hernaiz will need to hit his way into keeping the job -- this was just his second multi-hit effort of the campaign. The infielder is batting a passable .250, but he has a .638 OPS with one home run, five RBI, seven runs scored and two stolen bases over 69 plate appearances. He doesn't appear to have much upside unless his bat gets hot.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Ceding third base to Gelof

Hernaiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. He appeared to have a clear path to regular playing time at third base after Max Muncy (hand) was placed on the injured list in late April, but Zack Gelof has since overtaken Hernaiz as the preferred option at the hot corner. Gelof will occupy the position for a fifth straight game after Hernaiz went 1-for-13 with a 3:4 BB:K to begin the month of May.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Sitting again Thursday

Hernaiz isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies. Hernaiz will grab a seat on the bench for a second consecutive game after going just 1-for-13 at the plate to begin the month of May. Zack Gelof will start at third base and bat eighth.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Not in lineup Wednesday

Hernaiz is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in Philadelphia. Hernaiz had started each of the previous nine contests, but he'll begin Wednesday's festivities on the bench. Zack Gelof is covering third base and batting ninth for the Athletics.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Idle Wednesday

Hernaiz isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus Houston. Hernaiz will grab a seat on the bench Wednesday after going 1-for-13 over his last four games. His absence will allow Max Schuemann to start at the keystone and bat seventh.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Posts second steal

Hernaiz went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 10-4 win over the Angels. Hernaiz has maintained a decent share of playing time over the last week as the Athletics' primary third baseman, but his bat hasn't kept up. He has gone a modest 4-for-20 over his last six games, posting a 3:3 BB:K in that span. His steal Friday was his second of the season, and that's been on six attempts, which isn't great considering he stole 12 bases without getting caught over 95 games to begin the season with Triple-A Las Vegas. Hernaiz has added a middling .250/.323/.357 slash line with two home runs, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored over 32 contests in the majors this year.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Stepping in as everyday shortstop

Hernaiz will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. With Jacob Wilson (forearm) stuck on the injured list, Hernaiz appears to have taken over as the Athletics' primary shortstop. He'll collect his fifth straight start Sunday after going 5-for-14 with a solo home run over the previous four contests.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Recalled from Triple-A

The Athletics recalled Hernaiz from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. The 23-year-old will join the big-league roster as the replacement for Jacob Wilson (forearm), who landed on the injured list Tuesday. Hernaiz has spent the entire season in Triple-A, slashing .305/.384/.423 with 50 RBI, 66 runs scored and 12 steals through 441 plate appearances. Max Schuemann will likely see the bulk of the starts at shortstop while Wilson is out, though Hernaiz could crack the starting nine against southpaws.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Sent back to Triple-A

The Athletics optioned Hernaiz to Triple-A Las Vegas following Sunday's 4-3 win over the Brewers. Hernaiz's demotion clears room on the roster for fellow infielder Jacob Wilson (hamstring), who appears set to return from the 10-day injured list ahead of the Athletics' next game Tuesday in Cincinnati. Since being activated from the 60-day IL earlier this month, Hernaiz had settled in as the Athletics' primary option at third base, but he slashed just .209/.306/.326 with three extra-base hits and no stolen bases over 15 games to earn a trip back to Triple-A. With Wilson likely to take over as the Athletics' everyday shortstop, Max Schuemann is expected to slide over from shortstop to replace Hernaiz at third base.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Slugs first big-league homer

Hernaiz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Blue Jays on Friday. The rookie accounted for the Athletics' only run of the game with his 391-foot shot to left center in the third inning, his first big-league homer. Friday's start was the fourth in six games for Hernaiz since returning from the 60-day injured list, and he's now hit safely in two of the last three contests. However, Friday's blast was the first extra-base hit of his career as well, and he's still limping along with a .188 average and .472 OPS across 90 plate appearances this season.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Reinstated from IL

Oakland reinstated Hernaiz (ankle) from the 60-day injured list Friday. Hernaiz had been on the injured list since May 8 due to a left ankle sprain. He started his rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas on July 20, and across his nine games, he slashed .364/.432/.545 with two stolen bases, three doubles, one home run and two RBI across 37 plate appearances. To make room for Hernaiz on the 40-man roster, the Athletics transferred right-hander Luis Medina (elbow) to the 60-day injured list. Hernaiz had been given a brief look in an everyday role prior to landing on the IL, but he may have to settle for a utility role upon his return with Zack Gelof, Abraham Toro and Max Schuemann seemingly locked in as Oakland's starters at second base, third base and shortstop, respectively.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Remains on assignment Tuesday

Hernaiz (ankle) played a full game at shortstop in Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Albuquerque on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs. Hernaiz was charged with an error as well, but otherwise, his night was yet another step in the right direction. The 22-year-old appears ready for activation at any point moving forward, as he's now forged a .345 average and .873 OPS across 33 plate appearances over eight rehab games. Hernaiz has experience playing every infield position besides first base.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Solid workload in rehab games

Hernaiz (ankle) played in back-to-back rehab games for Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday, logging eight innings at second base in the former and taking a full allotment of plate appearances as the designated hitter in the latter. Hernaiz went a combined 2-for-9 during that stretch and has hit .364 over 24 plate appearances across six rehab games overall. The 22-year-old has also gotten the green light for a pair of steal attempts -- both successful -- during his time in the minors, supporting the notion his previously injured ankle could be back to full strength. Hernaiz appears well on track to be activated from the 60-day injured list at some point early in the coming week.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Another standout rehab effort

Hernaiz (ankle) started at shortstop and played seven innings in Triple-A Las Vegas' extra-inning win over Reno on Tuesday, going 3-for-5 with an RBI double, a stolen base and two runs. Hernaiz was back on defense after a day off Monday, and he delivered an encouraging offensive performance in addition to logging a full workload on defense without issue. The recovering infielder has hit safely in three straight rehab games and has back-to-back multi-hit efforts, suggesting he may not have much left to prove in the minors before activation.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Kicks off rehab assignment Saturday

Hernaiz (ankle) started at designated hitter in Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Salt Lake on Saturday, going 1-for-3 with a double. The rookie infielder was logging his first game action since May 7 and put together an encouraging performance overall. Hernaiz figures to need an extensive rehab assignment given the amount of time he's been sidelined, and his next appearance with the Aviators may also see him play at least a partial game on defense.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Begins hitting progression

Hernaiz (ankle) has begun a hitting progression, MLB.com reports. Hernaiz was able to shed his walking boot in the first half of June, and he's now graduated to baseball work from the strength and fitness program. The infielder will likely progress to full baseball activities after the hitting progression before eventually embarking on what could be a fairly robust rehab assignment.

  • Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Sheds walking boot

Hernaiz (ankle) is out of his walking boot and will begin a strength and fitness program this week, MLB.com reports. The 22-year-old has been making very slow progress from his severe ankle sprain, but it appears his recovery is starting to gather some momentum just over a month after he initially suffered the injury. Hernaiz's next step after the strength and fitness program will be to resume baseball activities, with the start date for that benchmark still to be determined.
