Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Back to throwing Thursday

Ray (oblique) completed dry throwing Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Ray seems to be ramping up his activity nicely, as he was also able to strengthen his shoulder in a pool exercise Wednesday. It's unclear how much longer he'll be on the shelf, since this was his first time throwing since suffering the oblique injury.

  • Phillies' Vince Velasquez: Fans 12 in Thursday's win

Velasquez (3-4) picked up the win Thursday against the Giants, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out 12 batters across six innings.

Velasquez struggled early on in this one, serving up two homers in the first two innings to put the Phillies behind 3-0. He flipped a switch after the second long ball, however, retiring 15 of the next 17 batters he faced -- 11 via strikeout -- before exiting with his fourth quality start of the season. Velasquez's 12 strikeouts, which were the most he's recorded since he turned heads with a 16-strikeout game in 2016, offer a glimpse of what he's capable of doing when pitching well, but his struggles with keeping the ball in the park (1.8 HR/9) make him tough to trust. He'll look to keep things rolling in his next start, which will come on the road against the Orioles.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Won't pitch against Rockies

Davies (shoulder) said he "didn't feel right" during his bullpen session Wednesday and will not pitch during the Brewers' series against Colorado this weekend, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Davies said he shut his bullpen session down after 10 pitches or so, though he added that he wasn't overly concerned about the setback. He's expected to take a few more days off before attempting to throw again, after which there should be a clearer idea regarding when he might return to Milwaukee's rotation. For now, Brandon Woodruff is expected to summoned from the minors to start for the Brewers on Friday.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Won't start Friday

Davies (shoulder) will not start Friday against the Rockies, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Davies is on the 10-day disabled list with right rotator cuff inflammation and was originally hoping to return Friday when first eligible. That no longer appears to be the case, however, as the Brewers have listed Brandon Woodruff and Chase Anderson as their starters against the Rockies on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Davies threw a bullpen session Wednesday, though it's unclear if he suffered a setback or if the team is simply playing it safe and giving him extra time to recover. Milwaukee hasn't announced a starter for Sunday's series finale, so Davies could still potentially return to action over the weekend.

  • Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Will start against Rockies on Friday

Woodruff will join the Brewers and start in Colorado on Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Woodruff has appeared in five games for Milwaukee this season, posting a 3.86 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with a 10:2 K:BB over 9.1 innings of work. Only one of those outings was a start, which came against the Cubs on April 6, when he allowed two earned runs in 3.2 innings. It remains to be seen if he will stay with the Brewers following Friday's start, but that likely depends of the status of Zach Davies (shoulder), who was tentatively lined up to start Friday's contest versus the Rockies before Woodruff got the call. Woodruff made one start at Triple-A Colorado Springs since being demoted May 1, pitching 2.2 innings and throwing 69 pitches in a May 5 start against Triple-A Oklahoma City.

  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Lands on DL with lat strain

Martinez was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a right lat strain Thursday.

This is the first news of any injury, so it's unclear when the injury occurred or how severe it is. It may go to explain his poor performance Tuesday, though, in which he allowed four runs in five innings against the Twins. Martinez will have to miss his scheduled start Sunday, but there's still hope he could make his following scheduled start May 19. Mike Mayers will come up from the minors to replace him on the active roster, but it's unclear who will start in his place Sunday.

  • Marlins' Merandy Gonzalez: Optioned back to Jacksonville

Gonzalez was sent down to Double-A Jacksonville on Thursday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Gonzalez appeared in six games out of the bullpen for the Marlins during his first cup of coffee in the big leagues after coming up to the majors three weeks ago. Over 13 innings, he logged a 4.85 ERA and 1.92 WHIP with an 11:7 K:BB. He will return to the Triple-A level for now, though it's likely that he will rejoin Miami in the near future. In a corresponding move, Elieser Hernandez (mouth) was activated from the 10-day disabled list.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Transferred to 60-day DL

Cueto (elbow) was moved to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Cueto's initial timetable after suffering a sprained right elbow was set at 6-to-8 weeks, though it's now guaranteed that he will be out until June 29, at the earliest. The 32-year-old went down with this injury following his start against the Dodgers on April 28, which happened to be his first outing all year where Cueto gave up multiple runs. Keep an eye on this situation as a surgical procedure is still on the table in the event that his elbow doesn't respond to rehab. In a corresponding move, the Giants promoted Jose Valdez from Triple-A Sacramento.

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Completes pool workout

Ray (oblique) performed shoulder-strengthening exercises and worked out in a pool Wednesday, Doug Padilla of MLB.com reports.

While it's good to see that Ray isn't completely shut down from working out, he'll need to resume baseball activity in some capacity before being considered remotely close to a return from the 10-day disabled list. He'll miss his second straight turn in the rotation Saturday against the Nationals, with the Diamondbacks expected to promote one of Troy Scribner, Taylor Clarke or Jake Buchanan from Triple-A Reno to make a spot start that day.

  • Julio Teheran SP | BAL

Braves' Julio Teheran: Dominant in Wednesday's win

Teheran (3-1) picked up the win over the Rays on Wednesday, scattering four hits over six scoreless innings while striking out seven.

The right-hander extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings, throwing 62 of 93 pitches for strikes and allowing only one baserunner past second base. Teheran now carries a 3.14 ERA and 42:18 K:BB through 43 innings heading into Monday's road start against the Cubs.
