  • Pirates' Jameson Taillon: Acknowledges season likely over

Taillon admitted Thursday that he's unlikely to pitch again this season after recently experiencing a setback with his strained right elbow, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "This season is probably a wash for me," Taillon said. "I've come back from a lot worse than this...I'm gonna find a way to become better because of this."

Per Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic, Taillon has scheduled a visit Monday with orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Altchek, who will assess whether the right-hander's elbow injury is serious enough to warrant the second Tommy John surgery of the hurler's career. Even if Altchek gives Taillon the green light to treat his injury through non-surgical methods, the 27-year-old would still be subject to a shutdown period that would likely make pitching again in 2019 an unrealistic outcome. The Pirates should provide an update on Taillon's outlook early next week.

  • Dodgers' Ross Stripling: Exits with stiff neck

Stripling was removed from Wednesday's start against the Angels after five innings due to a stiff neck, Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.

Stripling allowed two runs on three hits and had thrown only 62 pitches, so it was quite a surprise when he didn't take the mound for the sixth inning after batting for himself in the previous frame. More information should be available on the injury within the next couple days.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Last five innings for win

Wainwright (7-7) allowed four runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts across five innings while earning a victory against the Pirates on Wednesday.

The savvy veteran did just enough to get a win in this one -- with a ton of help from his offense. The Cardinals scored nine runs in the second inning, but Wainwright needed more than 50 pitches to record the first six outs, which still put him in jeopardy for a no-decision. Wainwright displayed more control over his last three frames and made it through five innings with 106 pitches. He's back to a .500 record, but he owns a 4.63 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 98 strikeouts in 103 innings. Wainwright will pitch next at home against the Cubs on Tuesday.

  • Jordan Lyles RP | KC

Pirates' Jordan Lyles: Roughed up again

Lyles (5-7) allowed eight runs (five earned) on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts across 1.2 innings while suffering an embarrassing defeat against the Cardinals on Wednesday.

After a 1-2-3 first inning, things just absolutely came apart during the second. The frame started with an error, but then the Cardinals posted four extra-base hits, including two homers, before Lyles recorded the first out. Ultimately, Lyles only registered a second out in the frame before getting the hook because the Pirates threw a runner out at the plate. The error did him no favors to start the inning, but that doesn't offset the right-hander having allowed six extra-base hits overall in one frame. Lyles has been a mess recently, giving up at least seven runs in three of his last four starts. He has also lost six straight decisions, as he's fallen to 5-7 with a 5.36 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 90 strikeouts in 82.1 innings. He will attempt to get out of this terrible funk Monday at the Reds.

  • Patrick Corbin SP | TOR

Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Six shutout innings

Corbin (8-5) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out seven across six innings to earn the win in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rockies.

Corbin allowed three of his six baserunners in the first inning and retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. The only downside of his night was another multi-walk performance, as he's now surrendered two or more free passes in three straight starts. That hasn't come back to burn him due to his ability to keep the ball in the yard, as he hasn't allowed a home run in five of his last six starts. Corbin now has a 3.25 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 151 strikeouts across 130.1 innings for the season. He'll look to keep his strong performance up in his next start, currently scheduled for Monday against Atlanta.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Six strong innings

Freeland (2-8) allowed one run (none earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out four across six innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Nationals.

Freeland held the Nationals offense in check and was a tough-luck loser. He did allow three extra-base hits -- all doubles -- but managed to strand them by holding the Nationals hitless with runners in scoring position. He started only 11 of the 24 batters he faced with a strike and generated just seven swinging strikes on 109 total pitches, but this was his first quality start since May 14. He still has a disastrous 7.00 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 73.1 innings for the season, though he'll look to string together another strong start in his next outing Tuesday against the Dodgers.

  • Zac Gallen SP | ARI

Marlins' Zac Gallen: Strikes out nine in win

Gallen (1-2) gave up two hits and one walk while striking out nine through seven scoreless innings to take the win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

It was a marquee night for Gallen as he set career bests for innings, strikeouts and hits allowed while picking up his first win in a terrific start. The 23-year-old is on a nice hot streak, posting a 1.58 ERA through three outings in July. Gallen will make his next start Tuesday against the Twins at Marlins Park.

  • Mets' Noah Syndergaard: Strikes out eight in loss

Syndergaard (7-5) gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and five walks while striking out eight through seven innings to take the loss against the Padres on Wednesday.

Syndergaard registered 17 swinging strikes, but he also struggled with his command. While trade rumors are heating up for the 26-year-old, he has posted a 3.46 ERA and a 28:9 K:BB through four outings in July. Syndergaard will make his next start Tuesday against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.

  • Julio Teheran SP | BAL

Braves' Julio Teheran: Strikes out six in loss

Teheran (5-7) gave up two runs (none earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out six through six innings to take the loss against the Royals on Wednesday.

Teheran delivered a nice performance, but he was on the losing side of a pitcher's duel after allowing two runs following a fielding error that would have ended the second inning. The 28-year-old has been consistent, allowing one run or fewer in 13 of 22 starts. Teheran has a 3.42 ERA with an 8.2 K/9 and a 4.1 BB/9 in 118.1 innings. Teheran will make his next start Tuesday at Nationals Park.

  • Kyle Hendricks SP | LAA

Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Opening series in Milwaukee

Hendricks will start Friday's game against the Brewers, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Hendricks originally lined up to start Saturday's contest, but manager Joe Maddon opted to shuffle his rotation following Thursday's scheduled off day. The 29-year-old has a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB in four starts since coming off the injured list in early July.
