  • Cal Quantrill RP | TEX

Padres' Cal Quantrill: Nabs first career save

Quantrill retired the only batter he faced via a flyball to record the save Tuesday at Texas.

The 25-year-old started Saturday's game and covered 3.2 innings, so it was a bit surprising to see him warming up in the ninth inning Tuesday with the Friars leading 6-4. Quantrill had no issues and needed only four pitches, so he could still make his next turn through the rotation Friday.

  • Rockies' Antonio Senzatela: Fires eight three-hit frames

Senzatela allowed three hits with six strikeouts and zero walks over eight scoreless innings during Tuesday's 11-inning loss to the Astros, and he didn't factor in the decision.

The 25-year-old and Zack Greinke essentially matched each other pitch-for-pitch Tuesday afternoon, as both hurlers gave up only three singles across eight shutout innings. Senzatela had a 6.71 ERA for the Rockies last season, but through five starts in 2020 he has a 2.90 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 24:5 K:BB over 31 innings. He'll look to keep things rolling on the road Sunday against the Dodgers.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Unavailable for weekend series

Quintana (thumb) will throw at least one more simulated game and won't be available for the weekend series against the White Sox, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Quintana is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, and pitching coach Tommy Hottovy said that his next appearance could be with the major-league club. However, manager David Ross said Tuesday that the left-hander will require at least one more simulated game, which would make him unavailable for the upcoming series against the White Sox. Quintana could return to the rotation if his sim game goes well.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Facing hitters Wednesday

Alcantara (not injury related) is expected to face hitters Wednesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Alcantara was cleared to resume baseball activities Saturday and should throw approximately 50 pitches against hitters Wednesday. If all goes well, his next throwing session could be in the major-league rotation as early as Monday against the Nationals.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Returns to alternate squad

Woodford was optioned to the Cardinals' alternate training site Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Woodford didn't appear during the team's doubleheader against the Cubs on Monday despite serving as the 29th man, and he'll now return to alternate camp. The right-hander has made one start for the Cardinals this season, allowing one run on one hit and no walks while striking out three over three innings.

  • Rob Kaminsky RP | STL

Cardinals' Rob Kaminsky: Sent down by Cardinals

Kaminsky was optioned to the Cardinals' alternate training site Tuesday.

Kaminsky didn't allow any baserunners over two innings while striking out two over the past two days, but he'll still be removed from the 28-man roster. The southpaw will remain on the taxi squad for the current road trip, so he will be available in an emergency. Jesus Cruz's contract was selected in a corresponding move.

  • Humberto Mejia SP | NYM

Marlins' Humberto Mejia: Recalled ahead of start

Mejia was recalled from the Marlins' alternate training site ahead of his scheduled start against the Mets on Tuesday.

Mejia will make his second start of the season after he was relatively effective in his major-league debut earlier in the season. In that start, he allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six over 2.1 innings against the Mets. He'll get to face a familiar foe in his second major-league start Tuesday.

  • David Peterson SP | CHC

Mets' David Peterson: Scratched from start

Peterson was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday and placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder fatigue, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Peterson had put together a nice start to the season over his first four starts and had secured two consecutive wins. However, he'll now miss at least two turns through the rotation as a result of a shoulder issue. The exact severity of the injury is unclear, but Corey Oswalt will start in Peterson's place Tuesday.

  • Jose Urena SP | LAA

Marlins' Jose Urena: Resumes activity at alternate site

Urena was one of 18 Marlins that tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this season who received clearance Saturday to resume baseball activities at the team's alternate training site in Jupiter, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Along with Urena, fellow starting pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Caleb Smith are among the players who tested positive that are now ready to prepare for returns to the active roster. Because none of the three pitchers have seen any game action since late July, they'll all likely require a week or more to get their arms reconditioned for starting duty. The Marlins aren't exactly overflowing with ideal replacements in the rotation at the moment, so it's possible Urena gets activated sooner than expected and handles limited pitch counts in his initial appearances.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Throwing bullpen Tuesday

Quintana (thumb) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Quintana threw a four-inning simulated game Sunday, and that apparently went well since he's throwing a bullpen session just two days after. The southpaw has progressed smoothly through his rehab process, but it's still unclear when he could return to the major-league club. Assuming his bullpen goes well Tuesday, he could be in line for another sim game, but pitching coach Tommy Hottovy didn't rule out a return to the rotation prior to another sim game, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. If Tyler Chatwood (back) is unable to return from the 10-day injured list in a timely manner, Quintana's 2020 debut could come sooner rather than later.
