  • Pirates' JT Brubaker: Respectable showing in loss

Brubaker (1-2) allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four over 5.1 innings in a loss to the Reds on Wednesday.

An RBI single by Shogo Akiyama accounted for all of the damage against Brubaker, and that was enough to saddle him with the loss as the Pirates got shut out. Brubaker's overall numbers leave quite a bit to be desired, but he has shown flashes with his fastball-slider combo. The right-hander will carry a 4.79 ERA and 36:14 K:BB in 35.2 innings into the final week of the season, with a couple more chances to strengthen his case for a 2021 rotation spot (vs. CHC, at CLE).

  • Luis Castillo SP | CHW

Reds' Luis Castillo: Fans 10 in win

Castillo (3-5) allowed three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Pirates on Wednesday. He struck out 10.

The right-hander put the team on his back once again after going the distance his last time out. He induced 18 swinging strikes on 91 pitches en route to his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season, and he now has a 1.23 ERA and 24:6 K:BB in his last three starts. Castillo endured some tough luck early and did not get much support from his teammates, but the surface numbers are finally starting to match up to his underlying dominance. He lines up to start Tuesday at home against the Brewers and could potentially go again the final day of the regular season, Sept. 27 at Minnesota, if the Reds are still in it.

  • Dustin May SP | MIL

Dodgers' Dustin May: Logs 5.1 innings in relief

May worked 5.1 innings in relief during Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Padres, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk. He fanned six.

May had previously been slated to start the tilt, but he was scratched early Wednesday. The move appeared to signal that the right-hander wasn't able to go because of the foot injury he suffered Sept. 10. That turned out to not be the case, as the 23-year-old entered the game in the third inning and worked into eighth. The Friars tagged him with three runs on two homers, but Gavin Lux's fielding error made it so just one of the runs was earned. May will carry a 2.68 ERA into his next outing, which is scheduled to come Tuesday against the Athletics.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Out with hamstring spasm

DeGrom exited Wednesday's start against the Phillies with a right hamstring spasm, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.

The 32-year-old was removed after giving up three runs over two innings due to the injury. The severity of the issue remains unclear, leaving deGrom's status for his next turn through the rotation up in the air.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Exits after two frames

DeGrom was removed from Wednesday's game against the Phillies after allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk over two innings, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The team has yet to announce an injury, but the right-hander was seen talking to the athletic trainer in the dugout between innings. The three earned runs is the most deGrom has surrendered during a start this season.

  • Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Complete-game effort wasted

Woodruff (2-4) took the loss while tossing a complete game (seven innings) in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He fanned five and did not issue a walk.

It was a strong showing for Woodruff, but unfortunately for the right-hander, Adam Wainwright was even better for St. Louis. Woodruff was spotted an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but that would be the only run support the Brewers would give him. The Cardinals belted a pair of solo homers and were able to grind out two more runs (one unearned) to hand the 27-year-old his fourth loss of the season. Despite the defeat, Woodruff appears to be trending in a positive direction, allowing just three earned runs across 14 innings during consecutive quality starts. His next start is scheduled to come Tuesday against the Reds.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Goes distance, improves to 5-1

Wainwright (5-1) picked up the win while tossing a complete game (seven innings) in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Brewers, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out nine.

The veteran right-hander fell behind 2-0 early on Keston Hiura's two-run homer in the first. Those would be the only two runs he would allow, however, as he settled in to fan nine in a complete-game victory. Wainwright has now logged a quality start in each of his last four outings, allowing just nine earned runs and striking out 28 across 28.1 innings during that span. He will look to stay on a roll when he takes the ball Monday in Kansas City.

  • Rob Kaminsky RP | STL

Cardinals' Rob Kaminsky: Cast off 40-man roster

The Cardinals designated Kaminsky for assignment Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

The transaction clears space on the 40-man roster and 28-man active roster for pitcher Johan Oviedo, who was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of his scheduled start in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Brewers. Assuming he goes unclaimed off waivers, Kaminsky would remain in the St. Louis organization and report to the team's alternate training site in Springfield. Kaminsky has made five relief appearances for St. Louis this season, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks over 4.2 innings.

  • Johan Oviedo SP | BOS

Cardinals' Johan Oviedo: Activated ahead of start

Oviedo (illness) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of his start during Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Brewers, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Oviedo hasn't been very dominant during his first four major-league starts as he's allowed at least two runs in each of his outings. The right-hander came into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, but he continually tested negative while he was sidelined. He'll return to the mound for the second game of Wednesday's nightcap and should be available going forward.

  • Eric Lauer SP | LAD

Brewers' Eric Lauer: Added as extra man

Lauer was recalled as the 29th man for Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals.

Lauer was optioned in mid-August after struggling significantly in his first two starts for the Brewers, allowing 13 runs on 14 hits in just 6.2 innings while striking out four and walking five. He'll likely be available as a long reliever Wednesday.
