Painter (elbow) has begun throwing "short" bullpen sessions, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Painter has progressed from long toss to throwing from the front of the mound, roughly 50-to-55 feet away from the plate. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said that he expects Painter to pitch in game action this season -- potentially for the big-league club. On the other hand, he also reiterated that the team is being very careful with its top pitching prospect, and there is still plenty of progress to be made in his recovery.

Freeland did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings against Miami. He struck out four.

It was a solid rebound for Freeland after he allowed eight runs (five earned) over two innings in his last start against Texas. His last outing aside, Freeland has been solid of late, allowing two runs or less in four of his last five starts. The 30-year-old lefty is 4-5 this season with a solid 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB through 11 starts (58.1 innings).

Garrett did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over five innings against the Rockies. He struck out three.

Garrett has now allowed just three runs over his last three outings (16.1 innings). However, he's only pitched through six innings once in nine starts. The 25-year-old left-hander is 1-2 this season with a 4.50 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 47:11 K:BB through 48 innings. Garrett tentatively lines up to face the Padres at home in his next start.

Atlanta recalled Dodd from Triple-A Gwinnett ahead of his scheduled start Thursday against the Phillies.

Dodd will get another opportunity to work out of Atlanta's rotation despite struggling to a 6.46 ERA through his first 15.1 major-league innings (three starts) this season. He's also been roughed up at times in Triple-A. The 24-year-old southpaw seems like an iffy fantasy streaming bet, even on Thursday's lighter slate.

Fried (forearm) played catch on flat ground Thursday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Fried is basically going to have to build up from scratch after being shut down for more than two weeks with a left forearm strain, though at least that process has now begun. The initial expectation was that Fried would miss a couple of months, but he might be ready to return sometime before the end of June if all goes well with this throwing progression. He landed on the injured list May 9, having logged a brilliant 2.08 ERA and 25:6 K:BB through 26 innings (five starts) to open the 2023 campaign.

Teheran has been confirmed as the Brewers' starter Thursday night against the Giants.

Teheran ultimately passed his physical after agreeing to a one-year, $1.5 million major-league contract with Milwaukee earlier this week. He'll jump right into the rotation mix, though expectations should be rather low. The 32-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in a game at the MLB level since 2021, and he was sporting a rough 5.63 ERA through 40 innings (eight starts) this season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Padres prior to opting out of what was a minor-league pact.

Hendricks (shoulder) was reinstated from the injured list Thursday prior to his scheduled start against the Mets, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Hendricks' start Thursday will mark his first appearance since straining his shoulder last July. He put up a 5.75 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across his five rehab starts but was solid in his last three times out, so that momentum could carry over into his 2023 debut.

Mikolas (3-1) picked up the win Thursday against the Reds after he allowed five hits and no walks across seven scoreless innings. He struck out five.

The right-hander delivered his third straight quality start and has covered seven frames in each of his past two outings. Mikolas had a horrible beginning to the campaign with 16 runs allowed over his first three outings, but he's rebounded in eight starts since with a 2.47 ERA and 33:11 K:BB over 47.1 innings.

Manager Bud Black said Thursday that Davis (elbow) is on track to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week with Triple-A Albuquerque, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.

Davis has made recent progress in his recovery from right elbow inflammation and might be an option again for the Rockies' injury-riddled rotation around mid-June. The 26-year-old had registered a 6.17 ERA through 11.2 major-league innings (three starts) this year prior to landing on the IL in late April.

Stone is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Rays at Tropicana Field.

In his return to the majors Monday in Atlanta, Stone took a no-decision in the Dodgers' 8-6 win after working four innings while allowing five earned runs on five hits and five walks. Despite his poor results in his first two big-league starts, Stone will get at least one more chance to prove he belongs in the rotation while the Dodgers are short on healthy starting options. Michael Grove (groin) looked sharp in his first rehab start at Triple-A Oklahoma City last weekend, and once he's activated from the 15-day injured list, he could be an option to take Stone's spot in the rotation if the rookie's struggles continue in Tampa.
