  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Candidate for rotation

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said Tuesday that Montgomery is considered as a possible replacement for Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) in the rotation, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Montgomery returned from the 60-day injured list last week and tossed four innings and 79 pitches in relief Sunday against the Orioles in his Rangers debut. At the time Montgomery was activated, manager Skip Schumaker said the left-hander would be used out of the bullpen, but circumstances have changed with Eovaldi landing on the shelf Monday. Cal Quantrill is another option to replace Eovaldi.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Operating out of bullpen

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said Friday that both Montgomery and Cal Quantrill will both move to the bullpen, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Montgomery was activated from the 60-day injured list Friday after fully recovering from March 2025 UCL surgery. He'll work out of the bullpen in his return, and his first time on the mound with the Rangers will mark his first major-league appearance since September of 2024. During that 2024 regular season with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery posted an 8-7 record across 25 games (21 starts) with a 6.23 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 83:44 K:BB over 117 frames.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Activated from 60-day IL

The Rangers activated Montgomery (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday. Montgomery hasn't pitched in the big leagues in nearly 23 months after undergoing UCL surgery in March of 2025. The left-hander worked as a starter on his rehab assignment, but it's unclear what the Rangers' plans are with Montgomery. He could work in long relief, at least initially. Across eight rehab starts, Montgomery logged a 3.75 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB spanning 24 innings.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Ups pitch count to 75 on rehab

Montgomery (elbow) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday. Montgomery built up to 75 pitches in his seventh rehab start, which he's hoping will be his final outing in the minors before coming off the 60-day injured list, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Rangers manager Skip Schumaker wouldn't commit to Montgomery making his next appearance in the majors, however, as the Rangers presumably want to assess him during a bullpen session before deciding on his next step. Montgomery -- who has been on the shelf all season while recovering from March 2025 UCL surgery -- has turned in a 4.74 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB in 19 innings over his seven starts between Round Rock and Double-A Frisco.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Making next rehab start Saturday

Montgomery (elbow) will make the seventh start of his rehab assignment Saturday in the first game of Triple-A Round Rock's doubleheader with Albuquerque, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. After turning in a 2.25 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 11:0 K:BB in 12 innings across his first five rehab starts between Round Rock and Double-A Frisco, Montgomery was roughed up for six earned runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings in his most recent outing with the Triple-A club last weekend. Montgomery was still able to reach 53 pitches in that appearance, and if he's able to build on that workload Saturday, he could be cleared to return from the 60-day injured list during the upcoming week. Montgomery has been on the shelf all season while recovering from UCL surgery, which he underwent last March.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Continues rehab assignment Saturday

Montgomery (elbow) will start Saturday for Triple-A Round Rock as he continues his rehab assignment, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Montgomery will make his sixth overall rehab start, his fourth with Round Rock. Through his first five starts, the 33-year-old has posted a remarkable 2.25 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 11:0 K:BB through 12 innings. This upcoming start will possibly be the southpaw's final rehab appearance after he underwent UCL reconstruction surgery in March of 2025.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Another scoreless rehab start

Montgomery (elbow) struck out three over two perfect innings in a rehab start Saturday with Double-A Frisco. Montgomery was making the second start of his rehab assignment and was supremely efficient, recording his six outs on 20 pitches (15 strikes). Before coming off the 60-day injured list, Montgomery will likely need at least three more starts in the minors to increase his workload and convince the Rangers that he's a viable option for the big-league rotation. The left-hander is working his way back from a hybrid UCL reconstruction surgery, which he underwent last March.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Scoreless frame in rehab start

Montgomery (elbow) allowed one hit and struck out a batter over a scoreless inning in a rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Sunday. Since Montgomery was pitching for the first time at any level since undergoing a hybrid UCL reconstruction last March, the Rangers had scheduled him for just one inning to kick off his rehab assignment. He was able to pass his first test without much drama, allowing a double but getting out of the inning in 13 pitches (10 strikes). Montgomery is expected to gradually increase his pitch counts over multiple rehab starts during the course of his 30-day rehab window, and his performance during his time in the minors will likely dictate whether he claims a spot in the Texas rotation or works in long relief upon his return from the 60-day injured list.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Throws live BP

Montgomery (elbow) threw a 20-pitch live batting practice session Wednesday, MLB.com reports. Montgomery continues to grind away at his rehab from left UCL surgery. He's looking at an early August return.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Slated for another bullpen

Montgomery (elbow) will throw his fifth bullpen session Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Montgomery has successfully completed four other bullpen sessions so far this spring, and he's slated to throw around 30 pitches during Tuesday's side session. If all goes according to plan, Grant mentions the southpaw will throw one more 30-pitch bullpen, and then potentially progress to two-inning sessions. There is still a long road ahead before Montgomery returns to game action, but it's a positive sign that he's feeling strong at this point in his recovery after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery last April.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Moved to 60-day IL

The Rangers placed Montgomery (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Dairon Blanco, whom the Rangers claimed off waivers from the Royals. The move to the 60-day IL won't affect Montgomery's return timeline, as the veteran southpaw was already expected to miss multiple months as he continues his recovery from hybrid UCL reconstruction surgery, which he underwent last April.

  • Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Inks one-year deal with Rangers

The Rangers signed Montgomery (elbow) to a one-year, $1.25 million contract Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Montgomery had a hybrid UCL reconstruction last March but hopes to be major-league ready around the All-Star break. The 33-year-old had a disastrous 2024 season with the Diamondbacks after signing late in spring training, posting a 6.23 ERA over 25 appearances. He was terrific in 2023, however, which included starring for the Rangers down the stretch of the regular season and their run to the World Series. The two sides are hoping to recapture some of that magic in 2026.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Lands on 60-day IL

The Diamondbacks placed Montgomery (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Montgomery is set to undergo Tommy John surgery sometime next week, which will end his 2025 season before it even starts and will likely force him to miss part of the 2026 season. The Diamondbacks will award his spot on the 40-man roster to lefty Jalen Beeks, who signed a one-year deal with the club. Montgomery is scheduled for free agency after the season.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Slated for Tommy John surgery

Montgomery will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery had seemed like a good bet to be traded eventually, but that's not going to happen now. The surgery ends a nightmarish stint in Arizona, as Montgomery posted a 6.23 ERA last season after signing late and never getting on track. He will be a free agent this winter and likely miss at least the first couple months of the 2026 season.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Drawing interest from other teams

The Diamondbacks are fielding interest from other teams about a possible trade involving Montgomery, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports reports. Montgomery, who got a late start to Cactus League action due to a strained finger, made his second spring start Wednesday, throwing 40 pitches. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out two over 2.2 scoreless innings. It was an encouraging outing that could lead to further interest as teams set rosters for Opening Day. The left-hander is competing with Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson for the final spot in Arizona's rotation. Whatever happens, Montgomery will get one more Cactus League outing to build up his pitch count and could be ready for the first week of the regular season, if he's pitching at the back end of the rotation or if a team uses an off day to get by with four starters.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Encouraging session Thursday

Montgomery threw 40 pitches over two simulated innings on the backfields Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Montgomery was hammered in his first Cactus League start last Saturday, and for a couple of reasons, including rain forecasted for Thursday evening, the Diamondbacks had him throw a backfield session Thursday afternoon instead of taking a turn in a game environment. It was a controlled environment where the left-hander could hit his pitch count and get in an up-and-down. All involved thought it was good session for Montgomery, who is expected throw next in a Cactus League game. He believes there's still time to get ready for the regular season, and the fact that he'd be fifth in line gives him a bit more time. Due to a day off following the first series of the season -- a four-game set against the Cubs -- Arizona will not require a fifth starter until April 5.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Next outing on back fields

Montgomery's next spring outing will come on a back field at camp Thursday instead of in a Cactus League game, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Montgomery was shelled in his spring debut last Saturday, recording just one out while allowing five earned runs. The Diamondbacks have indicated that the poor showing didn't factor into the decision to have him bypass pitching in a second Cactus League game. Instead, the team sees potential rain in the forecast for Thursday, and it wants to ensure Montgomery gets his work in during the day. The left-hander needs the work due to a finger injury early in camp that left him behind other candidates for the rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Shelled in spring debut

Montgomery pitched one-third of an inning in a Cactus League game against the Reds on Saturday, allowing five runs on two hits and two walks. It was Montgomery's spring training debut after he dealt with a strained left index finger early on in camp. The left-hander hit his first batter and followed up by allowing a two-run home run to Christian Encarnacion-Strand. He then walked the next two and then got Matt McLain to fly out before allowing an RBI single to Elly De La Cruz. He was pulled after 28 pitches. Montgomery is in a competition with Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson for the last rotation spot.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Set to pitch in game Friday

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Montgomery (finger) will pitch in a game Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Lovullo didn't specify whether Montgomery's appearance would come in a Cactus League contest versus the Angels or a minor-league game, but either way it's a big step forward for the southpaw. Montgomery has been limited this spring by a left index finger strain and his late start could eliminate any chance he had of breaking into the Diamondbacks' Opening Day rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Live BP session coming

Montgomery (finger) will throw to live batters on the back fields of camp Tuesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. By Tuesday, Montgomery will be the lone rotation candidate to not pitch in a Cactus League game. That raises concern that he may not be ready for the first turn of the rotation in the regular season, though it's not clear yet if he'll even be in line for a starting spot. Montgomery is competing with Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson for the final spot.
