  • Rhett Lowder SP | CIN

Reds' Rhett Lowder: Initiates throwing program

Lowder (forearm/oblique) is tentatively scheduled to throw from a bullpen mound Aug. 17, MLB.com reports.

Lowder began a throwing program this week with the goal of being available to throw in the Arizona Fall League. The organization believes the right-hander should be set up for a normal offseason.

  • Clay Holmes SP | NYM

Mets' Clay Holmes: Bounces back for ninth win

Holmes (9-5) allowed a run on six hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings to earn the win over the Giants on Friday.

Holmes was good enough, though he was far from dominant or efficient, needing 104 pitches (64 strikes) to get through five frames. The right-hander is reportedly not being considered for a move back to the bullpen, so the Mets appear to have faith in him to continue holding down a rotation spot despite a rough July. Friday's outing was his first win in five starts this month, and he's allowed 15 runs (14 earned) over 25.2 innings in that span. The 32-year-old is at a 3.40 ERA despite a 1.28 WHIP and 88:44 K:BB through 113.2 innings across 21 starts. He is tentatively projected for a road start in San Diego next week.

  • Logan Webb SP | SF

Giants' Logan Webb: Struggles again versus Mets

Webb (9-8) allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over four innings to take the loss versus the Mets on Friday.

This matched Webb's shortest start of the year, and it's the second time in three outings he's allowed six earned runs. Over that span, he's given up 16 runs in 15.1 innings, an unusual stretch of poor performances for the ace right-hander. Webb is now at a 3.38 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 144:30 K:BB through 135.2 innings across 22 starts. He had been pitching at a career-best level through the end of June, so this could simply be a bit of regression, especially against a tough sequence of opponents (Dodgers, Blue Jays and Mets). Webb will look to right the ship in his next start, which is projected to be a favorable home matchup versus the Pirates next week.

  • Nick Martinez SP | CIN

Reds' Nick Martinez: Grabs ninth win

Martinez (9-9) earned the win Friday against the Rays, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings.

Martinez extended his recent run of success Friday, limiting Tampa Bay to notch his fifth win in his last six starts. The 34-year-old has been dependable during that stretch, compiling a 3.30 ERA across those five victories. While Martinez doesn't generate a heap of strikeouts, he's consistently provided quality innings when called upon. The right-hander will carry a 4.69 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 86:29 K:BB into his next start, which is projected to be a tougher test next week on the road against the Dodgers.

  • MacKenzie Gore SP | WAS

Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Yields six walks in tough loss

Gore (4-10) took the loss against the Twins on Friday, allowing one run on one hit and six walks while striking out four across five innings.

Gore had issues with his command all night long, which reared its ugly head in the fifth inning, when his two wild pitches allowed Matt Wallner to advance from first to third before being brought home on a sacrifice fly by Byron Buxton. That was the only run Gore yielded, but he still took the loss after the Nationals were blanked by Zebby Matthews and the Twins' bullpen. Gore has given up two earned runs or less in four of his last five starts and has a 3.52 ERA, 1.27 WHIP across 117.2 innings, with his 144 strikeouts tied with Hunter Brown and Dylan Cease for fourth most in the majors. Gore has taken the loss in five of his last seven starts, and he'll look to get back in the win column in his next outing, slated for next week on the road against the Astros.

  • Shota Imanaga SP | CHC

Cubs' Shota Imanaga: Knocked around by crosstown rivals

Imanaga (7-4) took the loss Friday against the White Sox, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and no walks in three-plus innings. He struck out two.

Imanaga encountered troubled waters from the get-go, surrendering five runs on nine hits (including two homers) in the first two innings, and he was never quite able to settle in. The 12 hits allowed were a career high for the left-hander, who also established a season worst in runs allowed. Imanaga now owns a 3.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 55:17 K:BB over 78 frames, and he'll try to get back on track in Milwaukee in his next scheduled start.

  • Nick Pivetta SP | SD

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Takes loss despite quality start

Pivetta (10-3) took the loss Friday against the Cardinals, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over 6.1 innings.

Pivetta turned in another strong outing, though it wasn't enough to avoid taking the loss in a low-scoring affair. The right-hander hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a start since June 20 and has posted a dominant 0.96 ERA with 40 strikeouts and just eight walks over that six-start stretch. Pivetta will look to continue the hot streak in his upcoming outing, scheduled for next week against the Mets.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Allows four homers in no-decision

Freeland did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 win over the Orioles, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts over six innings.

Freeland allowed four solo homers in his first two innings but bounced back with four scoreless frames. The veteran southpaw threw 66 of 93 pitches for strikes with 12 whiffs, and he's now completed at least six frames in 11 of 19 starts this season. He'll take a 5.24 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 74:26 K:BB across 101.1 innings into a road matchup with the Guardians next week.

  • Miles Mikolas SP | STL

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Blanks Padres in bounce-back start

Mikolas (6-7) earned the win Friday against the Padres, allowing seven hits and striking out one across five scoreless innings.

Following a rough outing in Arizona, Mikolas bounced back effectively Friday, shutting out the Padres over five frames despite consistently dealing with runners on base. It marked the second time in his last three starts that the right-hander has delivered a scoreless effort. With the performance, Mikolas lowered his season ERA below 5.00, which now sits at 4.94 alongside a 1.30 WHIP and 70:23 K:BB over 102 innings. The veteran hurler is scheduled to take the mound again next week against the Marlins.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Goes six scoreless in no-decision

Burrows did not factor into the decision in Friday's 1-0 extra-innings loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six scoreless innings.

Burrows turned in the best outing of his young career, tallying his first quality start while generating 11 whiffs on 86 pitches. The 25-year-old was tagged for six earned runs July 12, but he's allowed just two over 16 innings in his other three starts this month. He'll carry a 4.15 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB across 52 innings into a road matchup with the Giants next week.
