Quantrill allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four in 5.1 innings versus the Red Sox on Wednesday. He didn't factor into the decision.

Quantrill had problems with Bobby Dalbec, who hit a pair of two-run home runs and a sacrifice fly off the Guardians' starter. He left in line for the loss, but Quantrill got off the hook when Cleveland tied the game again in the eighth inning. This was just the third time this season he's allowed multiple homers. The 27-year-old has a 3.97 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 71:33 K:BB across 111 innings in 19 starts. He's projected for a home start versus the Diamondbacks next week.

Gausman (7-8) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Cardinals.

Gausman had little trouble with the Cardinals the first time through the order, but he struggled the second time around and was ultimately chased with two on in the fifth inning. Trevor Richards then allowed a three-run home run to Albert Pujols, which put two more runs on Gausman's ledger in his fourth start of less than five innings this year. The right-hander has only given up five earned runs twice in 19 starts, and he has a 3.30 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 122:19 K:BB in 103.2 innings overall. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, tentatively scheduled as a road matchup with the Rays next week.

Gonzales (6-10) allowed two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five across seven innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Rangers.

Gonzales allowed a run in two of his final three innings but still managed to turn in an excellent start. It was a needed effort, as he entered the outing having allowed 10 earned runs on 20 hits across his last 11.2 frames. Gonzales owns only a 4.8 K/9 on the season, so his results are likely to remain inconsistent. Overall, he has maintained a 3.66 ERA and a 60:36 K:BB.

Skubal allowed two unearned runs on three hits across six innings but did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-3 over the Padres. He walked three and struck out two.

Coming out of the All-Star break, Skubal has now tossed 12 innings without allowing an earned run. It's reminiscent of how the lefty looked earlier in the year, and he's lowered his ERA to 3.67 in the process. It remains to be seen if Skubal can keep this up or if he'll run into a rough patch again, but he certainly looks like Detroit's ace at the moment. He'll aim to keep rolling in his next scheduled start Monday against the Twins.

Wells was removed from Wednesday's start against the Rays with lower-back discomfort, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

The right-hander surrendered four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and zero walks before being lifted during the fifth inning, and he ended up not factoring in the decision. It's unclear if the injury will affect Wells' availability for his next turn through the rotation, which tentatively lines up for Monday at Texas.

The Tigers selected Garcia's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

According to Beck, Garcia is expected to temporarily move into the rotation for Friday's game in Toronto, which would mark the 27-year-old's first start in his first 73 appearances in the big leagues. Perhaps as a reaction to the numerous personnel losses the Tigers have suffered to their rotation this season, Garcia recently transitioned into a starting role for Toledo. He maxed out at four innings over his three starts for the Triple-A affiliate, so the Tigers likely won't bank on him working deep into the game if he does in fact receive the starting nod Friday versus the Blue Jays.

Kikuchi (neck) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Thursday's home game against the Tigers, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports.

Kikuchi has been on the IL since July 7 due to a neck strain, but he began a rehab assignment last week and allowed two hits and three walks while striking out four in five scoreless innings during his lone minor-league start. He threw a side session Tuesday and has been cleared to rejoin the Blue Jays' rotation for Thursday's series opener against the Tigers. Kikuchi threw 77 pitches during his rehab start, so he should be able to handle a relatively significant workload against a favorable opponent.

Junk was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Junk has served exclusively as a starter in the minors this year, posting a 3.88 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 48.2 innings over 10 starts. He made four major-league starts in 2021 and recorded a 3.86 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 16.1 innings, and he'll make a spot start for the Angels during Wednesday's series finale in Kansas City.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch confirmed Faedo will require season-ending surgery on his right hip, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

The rookie right-hander will be undergoing his second major surgery of his professional career, as he previously had a Tommy John procedure in December 2020. After missing the entire 2020 and 2021 campaigns, Faedo bounced back effectively early on in 2022 to earn his first promotion to the big leagues, but he labored over his last few starts with the Tigers prior to being optioned to Triple-A Toledo shortly before the All-Star break. He was diagnosed with the right hip injury shortly thereafter and will wrap up his first year in the majors with a 5.53 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 53.2 innings. Hinch said he expects Faedo to be fully cleared for spring training, which should allow the 26-year-old right-hander to compete for a rotation spot.

Manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Turnbull (elbow) won't return in 2022, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Turnbull underwent Tommy John surgery in late July of last year and resumed mound work earlier this month. Although Hinch initially hoped that the right-hander would be able to return sometime in September, the Tigers' skipper said Wednesday that the aggressive timetable required for a late-season return wouldn't be worth it for Turnbull or the team. Turnbull should now have plenty of time to make sure he's fully healthy before likely returning to action during spring training in 2023.
