Gaddis was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday.

Gaddis' contract was selected ahead of his big-league debut Friday against the Astros, but the day didn't go nearly as well as he would have hoped. He lasted just 3.1 innings and left after giving up eight runs. He'll return to the minors for now but could get another opportunity next time the Guardians need a spot starter. Reliever Jake Jewell had his contract selected to take Gaddis' place on the roster.

Gaddis (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Guardians fell 9-3 to the Astros, coughing up eight runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out two.

Making his big-league debut, Gaddis tossed 45 of 79 pitches for strikes before getting the hook. He pitched adequately against everyone except Trey Mancini. Unfortunately, the former Oriole tagged him for two homers in two at-bats, with the second blast being a grand slam. The 24-year-old right-hander might get another start or two for Cleveland due a lack of currently healthy alternatives, but with Cody Morris (shoulder) having shifted his rehab to Triple-A this week and Aaron Civale (wrist) ready to begin his own rehab assignment, Gaddis' window for establishing himself in the rotation could close quickly.

Valdez (10-4) picked up the win in Friday's 9-3 victory over the Guardians, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out three.

It wasn't a dominant effort by the southpaw, but Valdez still delivered a quality start in an incredible 18th straight trip to the mound -- putting him two QS shy of Mike Scott's franchise record of 20 straight, set in 1986. Valdez will take a 2.87 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 120:48 K:BB through 135 innings into his next outing.

Kremer (4-3) picked up the win Friday, scattering four hits over 6.1 scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. He struck out two without walking a batter.

It was a somewhat unlikely pitchers' duel between Kremer and Mitch Keller on the night, but the Baltimore righty came out on top. Kremer tossed 61 of 83 pitches for strikes as he recorded his third quality start in 11 outings this season, but it's actually the fifth time he's shut out the opposition during his time on the mound. He has a 3.43 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 43:14 K:BB through 57.2 innings.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sale played catch Friday for the first time since undergoing surgery on his broken pinkie finger.

Sale underwent surgery July 18, a procedure described as "an open reduction and internal fixation of a left fifth finger proximal phalarix fracture." The club has not given a timetable for his return.

Ray didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 4-3 loss to the Angels, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

Ray surrendered his lone run on consecutive two-out hits in the first inning but was able to limit the damage thereafter aside from a Magneuris Sierra near inside-the-park home run in the second. It was a nice rebound outing for the 30-year-old as he had failed to make it past the third inning in each of his last two starts, and the 10 strikeouts mark the third time in his last six turns he's reached double digits. Ray sports a 3.96 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 149 strikeouts in 129.2 innings across 22 outings. He lines up to toe the rubber again midweek against the Yankees.

Sandoval registered a no-decision during Friday's 4-3 win against Seattle, allowing three hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 scoreless innings.

Sandoval put multiple runners on in four of his six innings but prevented any Mariner from passing second base and ultimately finished without allowing an earned run for the first time since his first three starts of the season. Control remains an issue for the 25-year-old as the four free passes tie a season high and he's now walked multiple batters in 11 straight starts. Sandoval carries a 3.41 ERA and 1.47 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for midweek against Minnesota.

Cantillo (shoulder) was placed on the injured list at Double-A Akron this week.

Cantillo threw three scoreless innings versus Harrisburg on July 30, but he's since been diagnosed with left shoulder soreness. The southpaw has impressed at the Double-A level with a 1.93 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 87:28 K:BB across 14 appearances (13 starts), though his 4.2 BB/9 leaves some room for improvement. It's unclear when he'll be ready to return.

Greinke (3-7) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings Friday, taking the loss versus the Red Sox.

Greinke threw 95 pitches (57 strikes) in another short outing. He's failed to complete more than five frames in each of his last six starts. Of the seven hits he allowed Friday, four were doubles, though he was able to keep the ball in the yard. Greinke's had his struggles this year, posting a 4.58 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 52:20 K:BB through 92.1 innings across 18 starts. That WHIP would be his worst since 2007, while the ERA is his worst since 2005. The right-hander is projected for a home start versus the White Sox next week.

Cortes allowed two runs on a hit and four walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Friday.

Cortes was nearly unhittable, but that may have been because he wasn't offering much worth swinging at. The southpaw threw just 48 of 83 pitches for strikes, with the only hit against him being a Yadier Molina RBI single in the second inning. Cortes has allowed 10 runs in 33 innings across his last six starts. For the season, he owns a 2.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 115:28 K:BB through 112 innings across 20 starts. He'll resume the hunt for his 10th win of the year next week in a projected start in Seattle.
