The Orioles designated Hamel for assignment Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Just five days after being claimed off waivers from the Mets, Hamel will lose his place on Baltimore's 40-man roster to make room for Carson Ragsdale, who was claimed from Atlanta on Thursday. Hamel has spent the vast majority of the season in Triple-A, where he owns a 5.32 ERA and 1.34 WHIP alongside a 75:22 K:BB across 67.2 innings.

The Pirates recalled Shugart from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

Shugart will be able to offer some length out of the Pirates' bullpen. He's posted a 3.50 ERA and 29:17 K:BB over 43.2 frames this season and has gone multiple innings in 14 of 34 appearances.

The Pirates optioned Moreta to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

Moreta has pitched well in 18 appearances out of the Pirates' bullpen this season, collecting a 3.24 ERA and 19:7 K:BB over 16.2 frames. He'll be replaced on the roster and in the bullpen by Chase Shugart.

Fermin earned a hold against the Royals on Wednesday with a perfect inning of work.

After Yusei Kikuchi was pulled from the contest due to a left forearm cramp, Fermin took over in the sixth inning and retired all three batters he faced on 11 pitches. The right-hander has been effective since his most recent call-up from the minors Aug. 17, registering a 1.88 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 15:8 K:BB over 14.1 innings spanning 16 appearances. Fermin has recorded a modest six holds over 39 outings this season, but he's picked up a hold in each of his past two games.

Suarez will undergo another MRI on his injured right elbow after the inflammation subsides, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Suarez had imaging last week after landing on the 15-day injured list, but the results were inconclusive due to inflammation. He's scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister on Oct. 7, and more should be known about his condition after that exam.

Beeks will serve as the opening pitcher for the Diamondbacks in Thursday's game versus the Dodgers, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Beeks will likely throw just one inning before handing things off to Nabil Crismatt, who is slated for bulk relief. It's the second opener assignment this season for Beeks, who has posted a 3.67 ERA and 46:20 K:BB over 56.1 frames.

Melton will start Thursday's game in Cleveland, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Each of Melton's last 10 appearances have come in relief, though he did throw three innings as recently as Sept. 13. The rookie right-hander will be pitching on four days' rest and should be capable of going a few innings for the Tigers, if needed. Keider Montero should be available for bulk out of the bullpen, though it's unclear whether the Tigers intend to use him.

Santana gave up a run on two hits in 1.1 innings Wednesday to blow his third save of the season in a 4-3 extra-innings win over the Reds. He struck out two without walking a batter.

The right-hander got taken deep by Tyler Stephenson in the ninth inning to tie the game at 2-2, only for the Pirates to pull out the win in the 11th. Santana may not have a classic closer's arsenal, averaging 94.8 mph on his fastball, but he's been very effective this year in a high-leverage role, recording four wins, 15 saves and 12 holds with a 2.24 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 58:17 K:BB through 68.1 innings.

Abel is scheduled to start Saturday in Philadelphia.

Abel made a four-inning relief appearance after being recalled from Triple-A St. Paul last weekend and will get an opportunity to make a start for the Twins against his former team. The right-hander was knocked around for six runs over three innings versus the White Sox last month in his only start for Minnesota.

Leahy is an option to start the final game of the season Sunday against the Cubs, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

It would be a sneak peek at Leahy as a starting pitcher as the Cardinals consider moving him into the rotation next season. All 97 of Leahy's appearances at the big-league level to this point have come in relief, though he has often gone multiple innings in his outings this season. The righty might be capable of covering 3-to-4 innings Sunday, but it would essentially be a bullpen game for the Cardinals.
