Avila (1-0) allowed a run on one hit and one walk while striking out four over two innings to earn the win Friday over the Mets.

Another big comeback from the Giants in the eighth inning put Avila in line for his first major-league win after he pitched the sixth and seventh. It's a positive moment in a season that's had few of them for the rookie right-hander. Avila has been scored on in all but one of his appearances, posting an 8.49 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB over 11.2 innings in a low-leverage role. He's filling the roster spot of Blake Snell (personal), who is expected to return from the paternity list early next week, at which point Avila is among the candidates to be optioned out.

Koenig will serve as the Brewers' opening pitcher for Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Koenig gave up a hit and a walk and struck out a batter in two-thirds of an inning while serving as an opener during Friday's win and will get a second straight opportunity to open a game. He will presumably remain in the game for just an inning or two before giving way to Colin Rea, who was originally scheduled to start Saturday.

Garrett (5-2) took the loss Friday against the Giants, coughing up five runs on four hits and a walk in the eighth inning.

The big blow was a grand slam by Patrick Bailey as Garrett squandered a 6-2 lead. The 31-year-old right-hander has been tagged with the loss in each of his last two appearances, and he's given up seven of his eight earned runs on the season in his last six innings, a poor stretch that has come as he's moved into the late-inning mix due to Edwin Diaz's own poor form. Garrett's stumbles have added more than two points to his ERA, but he still sports a 2.67 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 43:13 K:BB through 27 frames.

Hoeing felt mild tightness in his hamstring after a two-inning rehab appearance Tuesday, and he's been working on strengthening exercises since, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander originally appeared on track to rejoin the Marlins bullpen as soon as this weekend, but that plan is out the window. Hoeing likely won't need too much time to ramp up once he's deemed ready to resume his rehab assignment, but the team will be cautious with him rather than risk aggravating the injury. He had been one of Miami's most effective relievers prior to landing on the shelf in early May, posting a 1.83 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB through 19.2 innings.

Atlanta recalled Herget from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday.

Herget was acquired from the Angels on May 2, and he has since allowed three earned runs across seven innings with Gwinnett. He will now come up to give Atlanta a fresh bullpen arm, replacing Darius Vines, who was sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Doval gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in the ninth inning Friday to record his ninth save of the season in an 8-7 win over the Mets.

The Giants scored six of their runs in the eighth and ninth innings to create the save chance, but Doval very nearly squandered it following a leadoff double by pinch hitter DJ Stewart and a fielding error by Marco Luciano. It was the first earned run the right-hander has allowed since May 8 at Coors Field, and on the season Doval carries a 3.05 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 27:15 K:BB through 20.2 innings while converting nine of 10 save opportunities.

Wilson (3-1) picked up the win Friday, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 relief innings in a 7-2 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out seven.

Jared Koenig got the nod as the opener but recorded only two outs and put two runners aboard before Wilson entered the game. Wilson struck out Tyler O'Neill to end the rally, the first of a season-high seven Ks for the 26-year-old right-hander as he generated 28 called or swinging strikes among his 80 pitches. In six trips to the mound since taking the place of DL Hall (knee) in the rotation, Wilson has posted a 2.67 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 26:15 K:BB over 30.1 innings, but Friday's win was his first in that stretch. Hall has worked only one-inning stints to begin his rehab assignment, perhaps signaling that Wilson's spot is secure even when the Brewers' staff gets healthier. Wilson lines up to make his next trip to the mound at home next week against the Cubs.

Blach did not factor into the decision Friday against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out two.

Blach survived a difficult test as the Phillies entered Friday with the fourth-best offense in the majors by wRC+ (116). Outside of solo homers allowed to Nick Castellanos and Edmundo Sosa, Blach fared well enough to produce his first quality start of the season. Over 27.2 innings this season, the Rockies lefty has tossed a 4.55 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB. Blach is tentatively slated to face the Guardians at home in his next outing.

Alvarado blew the save Friday against the Rockies. He allowed one run on two hits and no walks over one inning while striking out two.

Alvarado looked to be cruising to another save after striking out Jordan Beck and Hunter Goodman to start the bottom of the ninth inning. However, pinch hitter Jacob Stallings and his career .340 slugging percentage had different plans, crushing a 427-foot solo home run to hand Alvarado his first blown save in 2024. The flame-throwing lefty sports a 3.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB in 22.1 innings this season.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Friday that Smyly (hip) is likely to be activated from the injured list during this weekend's series against the Cardinals, Elise Menaker reports.

Smyly made a rehab start with High-A South Bend on Tuesday, throwing three perfect innings while striking out five. Despite the fact that Kyle Hendricks was moved to the bullpen and Jordan Wicks (forearm) remains on the IL, Counsell noted that he will use Smyly in a multi-inning relief role when he returns, rather than moving him into the rotation. Smyly appeared in nine games before going on the injured list, registering a 4.97 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 12.2 innings.
