  • Marlins' Elieser Hernandez: Optioned to Jacksonville

Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday.

Hernandez struggled over the first two months of the regular season, and he'll ultimately lose his spot in the Marlins' rotation after allowing 12 runs on 15 hits and two walks while striking out 10 in 8.1 innings over his last two outings. The 27-year-old generated some production in the big leagues over the last few years, so it's possible he'll rejoin the Marlins at some point if he can right the ship in Jacksonville. Braxton Garrett is with the Marlins as part of their taxi squad, and he'll likely take Hernandez's place in the starting rotation.

  • Zack Thompson RP | STL

Cardinals' Zack Thompson: Excels in MLB debut

Thompson gave up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over four innings Friday against the Cubs. He earned the save in his big-league debut.

He was the eighth player since at least 1901 to pitch four or more innings and record a save in his MLB debut and the first in 45 years. Thompson is a starter by trade, and he gave the Cardinals some length out of the bullpen in the first game of a four-game weekend series. Given his success in this debut and at Triple-A this season (3.66 xFIP, 1.15 WHIP, 22.0 K-BB%), he could be an option to slot into the rotation at some point this summer.

  • Andre Pallante SP | STL

Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Starting in nightcap

Pallante will start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Pallante has been effective as a multi-inning reliever for the Cardinals this year, posting a 1.07 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 25.1 innings over 17 relief appearances. The 23-year-old last pitched when he tossed 3.1 innings against the Padres on Monday to earn his first career win, so he'll be pitching on full rest during his first major-league start.

  • Conner Menez RP | CHC

Cubs' Conner Menez: Loses spot on 40-man roster

Menez was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Saturday, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Menez was sent down May 17, and he'll lose his spot on the 40-man roster as part of a move after Caleb Kilian's contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. Menez has made eight appearances (one start) in the minors and has posted a 2.08 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 17.1 innings. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll likely remain in the organization.

  • Mark Leiter RP | ATH

Cubs' Mark Leiter: Sent down Saturday

Leiter was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Leiter made two relief appearances after being called up May 29, and he allowed three runs while striking out four in five innings. However, he picked up his first major-league win of the season Wednesday against Milwaukee. The right-hander will head back to the minors as part of a move to make room on the active roster for Caleb Kilian, who will start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cardinals.

  • Caleb Kilian RP | SF

Cubs' Caleb Kilian: Called up ahead of start

Kilian's contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa ahead of his start in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Kilian is a top prospect in the organization and will make his major-league debut during Saturday's nightcap. The right-hander has been effective in Iowa early in 2022, posting a 2.06 ERA, 41:15 K:BB and 1.28 WHIP in 39.1 innings. Although the 25-year-old needed some time to establish his mid-90s fastball velocity this year, he'll now get a chance to prove himself with the big-league club. If he impresses during Saturday's start, it wouldn't be surprising to see him remain in the rotation.

  • Daniel Hudson RP | LAD

Dodgers' Daniel Hudson: Notches fourth save

Hudson saved Friday's 6-1 win against the Mets, allowing one hit with two strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings.

Hudson entered a four-run game with two out and two on in the eighth inning and induced a Francisco Lindor groundout to neutralize the threat. Manager Dave Roberts opted to stay with the 35-year-old for the ninth, keeping the veteran righty in line for the save despite the Dodger win being by more than three runs. Hudson has now recorded saves in two of his last three appearances and has thrown 7.2 scoreless innings since consecutive losses on May 11 and 12.

  • Kenley Jansen RP | DET

Braves' Kenley Jansen: Notches 13th save

Jansen saved Friday's 3-1 victory over the Rockies, allowing an unearned run one hit with two strikeouts in one inning.

Jansen surrendered an RBI single to Yonathan Daza but kept Colorado off the board while recording two strikeouts after Los Angeles scored three in the top of the10th. It was a nice rebound from Tuesday's blown save and five earned runs surrendered in his last six innings.

  • Zack Littell SP | WAS

Giants' Zack Littell: Credited with win

Littell (1-1) earned the win Friday over the Marlins. He allowed a hit and struck out four in two innings.

The Giants went with a bullpen game Friday, but their offense established a large lead early. Littell pitched the fifth and sixth innings in this contest. He's gone 5.2 innings without allowing a run over his last four appearances as he continues to bounce back from a rough May. Overall, the right-hander has a 4.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 19:2 K:BB through 21.1 innings in a versatile middle-innings role.

  • John Brebbia RP | COL

Giants' John Brebbia: Tosses shutout frame

Brebbia yielded a hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning as the opener for Friday's win over Miami.

Brebbia allowed a single to Garrett Cooper but turned in a scoreless frame to help set the tone for San Francisco's big win. The 32-year-old lowered his season ERA to 3.18 with a 22:6 K:BB through 23 appearances.
