  • Tommy Nance RP | TOR

Marlins' Tommy Nance: Extends throwing distance

The Marlins announced Monday that Nance (shoulder) has been playing catch from 105 feet, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Nance will likely need to extend his throwing distance a little more before being deemed ready for mound work, something that could happen within the next week or two if he experiences no further setbacks in his recovery from a right shoulder injury. As a reliever, Nance likely won't be in need of as extended of a buildup program as a starting pitcher, but he still has several checkpoints to clear in his rehab before he'll be a realistic option out of the Miami bullpen.

  • Bryse Wilson RP | PHI

Brewers' Bryse Wilson: Picks up three-inning save

Wilson picked up the save in Monday's victory over the Mets while allowing no runs on one hit and three walks while striking out two over three innings.

With the Brewers up by double digits, Milwaukee decided not to waste any of their other bullpen arms and allowed Wilson to pick up the rare three-inning save. It's unlikely he'll be inline for more save chances unless the Brewers offer more blowout opportunities.

  • Anthony Bender RP | MIA

    Marlins' Anthony Bender: Throwing again

The Marlins announced Monday that Bender (elbow) has resumed playing catch, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Playing catch marks Bender's first reported throwing activity since he underwent Tommy John surgery Aug. 30, 2022. Though he'll likely face a shorter recovery and buildup program from his surgery than a starting pitcher, Bender still isn't expected to be ready to pitch out of the Miami bullpen at any point in 2023.

  • Rockies' Gavin Hollowell: Shut down with forearm tightness

Triple-A Albuquerque placed Hollowell on its 10-day injured list Sunday due to right forearm tightness, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports.

Hollowell was the final reliever the Rockies cut prior to Opening Day, and the right-hander looks like he'll have to wait a little longer for a call-up to the big-league bullpen now that he's tending to an injury. The 25-year-old previously appeared in six games for the Rockies in 2022, logging a 7.71 ERA and 1.57 WHIP over seven innings.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Available Monday

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Gallegos (back) is available to pitch out of the bullpen Monday against Atlanta, Jim Hayes of Bally Sports Midwest reports.

Gallegos was unavailable for the weekend series against the Blue Jays due to a back issue, but he's evidently recovered enough to be used Monday, if needed. The 31-year-old is slated to serve as Ryan Helsley's primary setup man and could see the occasional save chance.

  • Josh Hader RP | HOU

Padres' Josh Hader: Picks up first save

Hader tossed a scoreless inning without allowing a hit or walk and earned the save during Sunday's 3-1 win over the Rockies. He struck out one.

Hader tossed his second scoreless inning and earned his first save of the season. He has three strikeouts over his first two appearances and looks sharp to start 2023 after a rocky 2022 campaign.

  • Andrew Chafin RP | CIN

Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Snags win in finale

Chafin (1-0) allowed one walk and struck out two over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning, picking up the win in Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Dodgers.

Chafin's work bridged the bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth innings in his second late-game appearance in as many outings. After he earned the save Friday, Chafin gave way to Scott McGough on Sunday.

  • Scott McGough RP | ATH

Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Earns first save

McGough struck out one over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning to save Sunday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers.

McGough dispatched the two hitters he faced on nine pitches to record the first save of his MLB career. He'd been a closer in Japan the last two seasons, and the Diamondbacks rolled the dice in bringing him back stateside. The right-hander impressed in the Cactus League, putting him in the mix to save games.

  • Dodgers' Brusdar Graterol: Pitches in ninth inning Sunday

Graterol (0-1) took the loss in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Arizona. He allowed one run on four hits over one inning.

Graterol entered Sunday's matchup in the ninth inning during a tie game, and although he gave up a run to take the loss, it was encouraging to see him take the mound in the ninth while Evan Phillips was used in the eighth frame. The Dodgers haven't named a set closer to begin the year, but Graterol's work in the ninth inning suggests that he could be first in line for save opportunities. The right-hander made 46 appearances for the Dodgers last year, converting four of his five save chances while picking up 10 holds with a 3.26 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 49.2 innings.

  • Kyle Finnegan RP | DET

Nationals' Kyle Finnegan: Notches first save

Finnegan worked a clean ninth inning to earn a save against Atlanta on Sunday.

Finnegan was given the save opportunity after coughing up two runs in a non-save situation during his first appearance of the season. He needed just eight pitches to quickly finish off the 4-1 victory. The 31-year-old picked up 11 saves in 15 chances last season and looks to be the team's main ninth-inning arm once again.
