Tigers' Will Vest: Collects 12th save

Vest tossed a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts to earn the save in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Orioles.

Vest recorded his second save in the series against Baltimore and his 12th of the season as he keeps performing at a high level for the Tigers. The veteran righty lowered his ERA to 1.83, and he's struck out 36 batters in 34.1 innings. Vest has also easily set a new career high in saves, as he came into the year with only five saves at the MLB level across four seasons. Tommy Kahnle has been a reliable high-leverage arm out of the Detroit bullpen as well and has eight saves himself, but Vest has established himself as the top closing option due to his dominant work on the mound.

  • Scott Effross RP | DET

Yankees' Scott Effross: On way back to big leagues

The Yankees recalled Effross from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

It's the corresponding move for Brent Headrick, whose demotion to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was already announced. Effross holds a 12.71 ERA at SWB in 2025 but has turned in consecutive scoreless appearances.

  • Matt Gage RP | SF

Tigers' Matt Gage: Added to bullpen

The Tigers selected Gage's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.

Gage earned a promotion after collecting a 1.67 ERA and 28:4 K:BB over 32.1 innings with Toledo. He will give manager A.J. Hinch another left-handed relief option.

  • Beau Brieske RP | DET

Tigers' Beau Brieske: Sent back to minors

The Tigers optioned Brieske to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.

Brieske was knocked around for five runs while recording just one out in Wednesday's loss to the Orioles, pushing his ERA on the season to 6.55. He'll try to get back on track at Toledo.

  • Brent Headrick RP | NYY

Yankees' Brent Headrick: Sent to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Headrick to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

A corresponding move will be announced prior to Thursday's game in Kansas City. Headrick has a 4.73 ERA over 13.1 innings with the Yankees this season, but his 16:3 K:BB suggests he's pitched better than the ERA indicates.

  • Jacob Latz RP | TEX

Rangers' Jacob Latz: Works in relief Wednesday

Latz (hand) allowed two earned runs on three hits in an inning of relief in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Twins.

The lefty made his second career MLB start in his most recent appearance last Sunday against the Nationals and struck out seven over 3.1 innings before exiting with an apparent blister or cut on his pitching hand, but he made enough improvement for the Rangers to call upon him from the bullpen three days later. With Nathan Eovaldi (triceps) looking unlikely to be ready to return from the injured list the next time his turn in the rotation comes up Saturday versus the White Sox, Latz could be needed to make another start. Even if that's the case, Latz would likely be deployed as more of an opener than a traditional starter.

  • Keegan Akin RP | BAL

Orioles' Keegan Akin: Serving as opener Thursday

Akin will serve as the Orioles' opening pitcher in Thursday's game versus the Tigers, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Dean Kremer had been scheduled to start, but he now appears slated to serve as a bulk reliever. Akin has opened twice for the Orioles this season, tossing a combined 2.2 frames in those outings.

  • Jake Cousins RP | LAD

Yankees' Jake Cousins: May have UCL damage

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Cousins (forearm) appears to be dealing with a UCL injury, but the right-hander will receive further medical opinions before the diagnosis is confirmed, Jackson Stone of MLB.com reports.

Cousins was dealing with a right forearm strain upon reporting to spring training and opened the season on the injured list, and his rehab process was extended further in May, when he suffered a pectoral injury. He made enough progress with his throwing program to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment earlier this month, but he made just two appearances before experiencing his second setback of the season. If Cousins is in fact dealing with ligament damage in his elbow, his return would likely be pushed back until after the All-Star break if he elects to treat the injury with rest and rehab. Season-ending Tommy John surgery would also be a potential outcome.

  • Kolby Allard SP | CLE

Guardians' Kolby Allard: Thriving in return to bullpen

Allard allowed an unearned run on three hits while striking out a batter in two innings out of the bullpen in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Reds.

Since making a four-inning spot start against the Dodgers on May 28, Allard has shifted back to the bullpen, where he's made his last three appearances for Cleveland. The veteran lefty owns an excellent 1.73 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 26 innings this season, but he's been getting by on inducing weak contact and avoiding walks rather than making bats miss (10.5 K%).
