  • Dodgers' Austin Barnes: Racks up three hits Friday

Barnes went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI in a loss to the Phillies on Friday.

Barnes started for the third time in five days with primary catcher Will Smith nursing a pectoral issue. The backup backstop responded with his first three-hit effort of the campaign. Barnes has seen limited action this season, but he has hit well when given the chance, compiling a .286/.359/.600 slash line with three homers, eight RBI and seven runs through 39 plate appearances.

  • Curt Casali C | ATL

Giants' Curt Casali: Homers in win

Casali went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Friday's 8-2 win over the Cardinals.

Casali capped off a five-run eighth inning with his blast off Cardinals reliever T.J. McFarland. This was Casali's first homer of the season, and just his third extra-base hit. The catcher is slashing a solid .256/.333/.372 with five RBI, four runs scored and two doubles through 48 plate appearances. He'll likely continue to split time behind the dish with Joey Bart, though Casali's been the more consistent of the Giants' two backstops in recent games.

Dodgers' Will Smith: Managing pectoral issue

Smith is managing a pectoral issue but will return to the lineup Saturday against the Phillies, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

The pectoral problem will send Smith to the bench Friday, but the issue doesn't seem to be a major one. He'll get one more day off from catching, as he's expected to be the designated hitter Saturday, but he's penciled in as the Dodgers' catcher for the team's next three games.

Dodgers' Will Smith: Not starting Friday

Smith will sit Friday against the Phillies, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Smith sits after going 3-for-4 with a walk and three RBI in Friday's series opener. Austin Barnes will take over behind the plate.

  • Joey Bart C | PIT

Giants' Joey Bart: Not starting Friday

Bart is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Cardinals, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Bart and Curt Casali have alternated turns behind the plate over the last six games. Casali will catch for Logan Webb on Friday, but Bart should return to the lineup Saturday if the pattern continues.

  • James McCann C | ARI

Mets' James McCann: Out six weeks with broken wrist

McCann underwent X-rays on Friday and was diagnosed with a fractured hamate in his left wrist which will require surgery.

The 31-year-old was held out of the lineup Friday for the third straight game and will now be unavailable for the next six weeks. McCann has struggled early in the season with a .196/.266/.286 slash line, but losing his defensive prowess behind the plate is a significant blow for the Mets. Tomas Nido is poised to step in as New York's primary catcher while Patrick Mazeika was recalled to fill the No. 2 role.

Mets' James McCann: Sitting again Friday

McCann (wrist) is out of the lineup for Friday's game versus the Mariners, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

McCann expected to be back Friday after sitting out the past two games, but he'll instead remain on the bench due to soreness in his left wrist. Tomas Nido will receive another start behind the plate in his absence.

  • Omar Narvaez C | HOU

Brewers' Omar Narvaez: Not starting Friday

Narvaez isn't starting Friday's game against the Marlins.

Narvaez has gone 4-for-8 with a homer, two doubles, two runs, two RBI, a walk and a strikeout over his last two games, but he'll be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three matchups. Victor Caratini will start behind the plate and bat ninth.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Three hits, two RBI in win

Stephenson went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and an additional run scored during Thursday's 4-0 win over the Pirates. He also struck out once.

Stephenson opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second and extended the Reds' lead to 2-0 with a solo shot in the fourth. Over his last three games, Stephenson has eight hits, seven RBI and four runs scored.

Dodgers' Will Smith: Knocks in three runs Thursday

Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run and three RBI in Thursday's loss to the Phillies.

Smith was a big part of a Dodgers comeback from a 7-1 deficit that ultimately came to nothing, doubling in two runs in the sixth inning and driving home another with a single in the eighth. The three-hit performance was the first for the backstop this season, and this was the fourth time he has driven in multiple runs in a contest. Smith is slashing .260/.365/.397 with two homers, 16 RBI, 13 runs and an 11:15 K:BB across 85 plate appearances on the campaign.
