Pirates' Joey Bart: On bench in second straight

Bart is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Though he stuck around over Henry Davis -- who was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday -- once Yasmani Grandal (foot) was activated from the 10-day injured list, Bart looks as though he'll operate as the Pirates' No. 2 option behind the plate. He'll take a seat for the second straight day while Grandal logs another start at catcher.

  • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: One hit in Pittsburgh debut

Grandal went 1-for-4 Saturday against the Rockies.

Grandal made his first start since joining the Pirates this offseason, as he was sidelined by a foot injury for the first month of the campaign. He reached base in his first plate appearance on a single. Grandal is expected to serve as Pittsburgh's primary catcher, though he may be pushed for playing time by Joey Bart.

Giants' Tom Murphy: Getting MRI on knee Sunday

Murphy (knee) will undergo an MRI on Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Murphy said he felt a pop in his left knee while trying to block a wild pitch in Saturday's loss to the Phillies. It's an injury that forced him from the game and Murphy admitted after the contest that his concern level is high. With Patrick Bailey (concussion) also sidelined, the Giants are down to one healthy catcher on their 40-man roster in Blake Sabol.

Cardinals' Pedro Pages: Headed back to Triple-A

Pages will be optioned to Triple-A Memphis prior to Sunday's game against the White Sox, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

He was up as a third catcher for a bit but will clear out to make room for Dylan Carlson's (shoulder) return from the injured list. Pages is 0-for-2 in four plate appearances with the big club, although he did have a go-ahead sac fly in the ninth inning of a comeback win over the Tigers earlier this week.

Giants' Tom Murphy: Evaluated for left knee injury

Murphy is being evaluated for a left knee injury after exiting Saturday's game versus the Phillies, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Murphy tweaked the knee as he tracked down a wild pitch in the second inning in rainy conditions in Philadelphia. He's the second Giants catcher to go down in a day's time, as Patrick Bailey was just placed on the 7-day concussion injured list, though the extent of Murphy's injury remains uncertain. Blake Sabol took over for Murphy on Saturday.

Giants' Tom Murphy: Exits with apparent knee injury

Murphy was removed from Saturday's game versus the Phillies in the second inning with an apparent knee injury, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Murphy seemed to tweak his knee as he chased down a wild pitch. The Giants already put Patrick Bailey on the 7-day concussion injured list earlier Saturday and may now have lost another catcher. Blake Sabol, who was recalled to replace Bailey on the roster, took over behind the dish for Murphy on Saturday.

  • Blake Sabol C | BOS

Giants' Blake Sabol: Back to big club

The Giants recalled Sabol from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.

The move corresponds with San Francisco placing catcher Patrick Bailey on the 7-day concussion IL. Sabol has played 21 games in Triple-A this season, slashing .243/.378/.324 with three doubles, 16 walks, one home run and six RBI over 91 plate appearances with Sacramento. Sabol played in 110 games for the Giants last season and finished with a .235 average, 13 home runs and 44 RBI. He'll provide depth behind the plate while Tom Murphy takes over as the primary catcher in Bailey's absence.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Lands on concussion IL

The Giants placed Bailey on the 7-day concussion injured list Saturday.

Bailey left Friday's game against the Phillies after he was struck in the mask by a foul tip off the bat in the first inning. Tom Murphy is slated to take over as the primary catcher in Bailey's absence, while Blake Sabol was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday to provide backstop depth.

  • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Back in action Saturday

Grandal is starting at catcher and batting sixth in Saturday's game against the Rockies.

Grandal missed all of spring training due to plantar fasciitis in his foot, and he began the season on the 10-day injured list. He played in nine rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a .257/.316/.400 line with one home run and 11 RBI over 38 plate appearances. Grandal was activated from the IL on Friday, and he's set to make his 2024 debut Saturday against Rockies southpaw Austin Gomber.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Hitless in return

Stephenson went 0-for-3 in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Orioles.

Stephenson missed the last four games while dealing with a hand injury resulting from a hit-by-pitch last Saturday. He had been available off the bench if needed.
