  • Ryan McMahon 3B | NYY

Rockies' Ryan McMahon: Breaks out with four hits

McMahon went 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Rangers.

McMahon entered Saturday just 2-for-21 (.095) over his last six contests. The only downside to his performance in this contest was that all four hits were singles. The third baseman is up to a .303/.391/.462 slash line with five home runs, 21 RBI, 16 runs scored and no stolen bases over 39 contests this season. He's never hit higher than .254 or slugged better than .450 in a full season, so the first quarter of the 2024 campaign has essentially been McMahon at his absolute best, which consequently raises a red flag for regression later in the year.

  • Matt Chapman 3B | SF

Giants' Matt Chapman: Grand slam powers win

Chapman went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Reds.

Chapman has multiple hits in two of his last three games, and Saturday also saw him go deep for the first time since April 16. The third baseman's first-inning blast was all the Giants needed in the win. Chapman is up to five homers, 18 RBI, 20 runs scored, seven doubles and three stolen bases with a .213/.261/.355 slash line over 40 contests. He's yet to really find a rhythm at the plate, and he's also not showing as much power or plate discipline to make up for his shaky contact.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Exits with right knee injury

Morel was removed from Saturday's game versus the Pirates in the fifth inning with right knee soreness, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Morel looked to hurt the knee on a stolen base attempt in the top of the third inning. He remained in the game initially but was removed for a pinch hitter following a rain delay. The Cubs could have more on Morel's condition after the game.

  • Ke'Bryan Hayes 3B | CIN

Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: To IL with back issue

Hayes was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a back issue, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Hayes hasn't played since Tuesday amid a 3-for-30 slump, and perhaps the back issue is part of the reason he's only hit one home run in 35 games. Alika Williams is getting the call from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Ke'Bryan Hayes 3B | CIN

Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: On bench Friday

Hayes is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.

Hayes is mired in a 2-for-26 slump and will sit Friday for the second consecutive contest. Jared Triolo will shift to third base while Nick Gonzales, freshly promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis, starts at the keystone.

  • Joseph Ortiz 2B | MIL

Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Launches third home run

Ortiz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 7-1 win over the Cardinals.

Ortiz has now homered in consecutive games and has registered an extra-base hit in five of his last eight contests. He continues to crush right-handed pitching this season, slashing .327/.424/.618 in that split with three home runs, eight runs scored and 10 RBI in 66 plate appearances. The 25-year-old will continue to jockey with Oliver Dunn for playing time at the hot corner, but Ortiz's recent hot streak could give him the upper hand.

  • Zack Short SS | HOU

Braves' Zack Short: Headed to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Short from the Red Sox on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations.

He will slide right into the role fellow utility infielder Luis Guillorme vacated after being traded to the Angels earlier Thursday. Short, who will turn 29 later this month, is a career .169/.262/.299 hitter over parts of four major-league seasons and has managed just one base hit through 19 plate appearances in 2024 between his time with the Mets and Red Sox.

  • Matt Chapman 3B | SF

Giants' Matt Chapman: Receiving rest day

Chapman is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rockies, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Chapman will take a seat for the first time since April 20 in what likely amounts to a maintenance day as the Giants and Rockies wrap up their series with a day game after a night game. Wilmer Flores will fill in at the hot corner for Chapman, who has seen his performance both in the field and at the plate take a step back in 2024 since signing with the Giants in March. He enters Thursday's contest with a .601 OPS, the lowest mark of any season in his career by more than 100 points (.717 in 2021 with Oakland).

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Fills in at first base

Candelario started at first base and went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Arizona.

Candelario moved across the diamond from third base to cover first for Christian Encarnacion-Strand (hand), who is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Candelario is one of several Cincinnati bats off to a slow start; the three-hit night raised his season average to .206, just the second day it's been above .200. Santiago Espinal took over for Candelario at third base.

  • Eugenio Suarez 3B | CIN

Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Homers in win

Suarez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a steal in Wednesday's 4-3 win over Cincinnati.

Suarez's eighth-inning home run gave the Diamondbacks a 4-2 cushion, which the team needed as the Reds plated a run in the bottom of the ninth. It was the third home run of the season for Suarez, who earlier in the game snapped an 0-for-14 stretch, while the stolen base was his first of 2024.
