  • Matt Vierling RF | DET

Tigers' Matt Vierling: Has big game Wednesday

Vierling went 2-for-3 with a home run, an additional run scored and three total RBI in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Cardinals.

Vierling connected for a two-run shot in the third inning, his third home run of the season, then drove in another run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The 27-year-old has been seeing regular time at third base with Gio Urshela (hamstring) out, and Vierling has responded with a solid .282 average and .758 OPS, giving him decent short-term fantasy value.

  • Jon Berti 3B | CHC

Yankees' Jon Berti: Held out with back issue

Manager Aaron Boone said Berti (groin) won't play in a scheduled rehab game with Double-A Somerset on Wednesday after his back locked up on him, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

The hope is that it's only a one-day absence for Berti, but that wouldn't seem to be a given. He's played two games with Somerset already as he comes back from a groin strain. Berti had potentially been looking at a return from the 10-day injured list this weekend, but that might be delayed now.

  • Miguel Sano 3B | LAA

Angels' Miguel Sano: Placed on IL with knee injury

The Angels placed Sano on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left knee inflammation.

Sano has missed most of the last week with the injury, and the Angels finally decided to deactivate him. He will be eligible to return from the IL next week, but it's not clear yet whether he's expected to make it back by that time. Willie Calhoun was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding movfe and could see some starts at designated hitter, although the Halos might filter through multiple players in the spot.

  • Abraham Toro 1B | BOS

Athletics' Abraham Toro: Multi-hit effort in Tuesday's win

Toro went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, a double and a run in a win over the Pirates on Tuesday.

JJ Bleday stole the spotlight for the suddenly surging Athletics with his pair of home runs, but Toro turned in a noteworthy performance while playing a bit of small ball. The 27-year-old extended his hitting streak to five games in the process, a stretch during which he's laced a trio of two-baggers and has boosted his average 39 points to .250.

  • Josh Rojas 3B | CHW

Mariners' Josh Rojas: Sits against lefty

Rojas is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

With southpaw Chris Sale on the bump for Atlanta, the lefty-hitting Rojas will retreat to the bench. Luis Urias will draw the start at third base in the series finale.

  • Isaac Paredes 3B | HOU

Rays' Isaac Paredes: Nursing minor injury

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Paredes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers due to his body and arm "barking a little bit," Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Cash seemed to suggest that Paredes isn't dealing with anything more than general soreness, with the skipper adding that Wednesday was an optimal time to give the third baseman a breather since he'll benefit from a two-day break with the Rays being off Thursday. Paredes, who had started each of the previous 11 games, should be back in the lineup when the Rays open their series with the Mets on Friday.

  • Darell Hernaiz SS | ATH

Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Getting regular run at shortstop

Hernaiz will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

Hernaiz will draw his seventh straight start Wednesday, with three of his last four starts having come at shortstop. He appears to have moved ahead of Nick Allen on the depth chart at shortstop while recording five hits in 17 at-bats to go with four walks since he was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas last Thursday.

  • Zack Short SS | HOU

Red Sox's Zack Short: Shipped to Boston

The Red Sox acquired Short from the Mets on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations.

Short had been designated for assignment but has now found a new home. The utility infielder is out of minor-league options, so he will join the Red Sox's 26-man active roster.

  • Kyle Farmer 3B | ATL

Twins' Kyle Farmer: Returns to bench role

Farmer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox.

Farmer will hit the bench for Wednesday's series finale after he had started in each of the last five games (three at second base, two at third base). The platoon-happy Twins should continue to find room for the righty-hitting Farmer in the lineup when southpaws are on the mound for the opposition, but Farmer's opportunities at third base will likely become more scarce moving forward. Carlos Correa returned from the 10-day injured list Monday to take back an everyday role at shortstop, and Edouard Julien and Willi Castro look first in line to start at second and third base, respectively, when the Twins oppose righties.

  • Jose Miranda 3B | MIN

Twins' Jose Miranda: On bench in second straight

Miranda is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox.

Miranda and Kyle Farmer had recently been part of a timeshare at third base, but both could see their playing time against right-handed pitching take a hit moving forward after shortstop Carlos Correa (intercostal) was reinstated from the injured list Monday. With Correa back in the fold, Willi Castro -- who had been serving as the primary shortstop while Correa was on the shelf -- could end up seeing the bulk of the starts at the hot corner until Royce Lewis (quadricep) is ready to return from the 10-day IL.
