Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Could be available off bench

Marte (knee) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs but could be available off the bench if needed, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Marte was removed from Saturday's contest with left knee soreness after being hit by a pitch, and he's considered day-to-day after X-rays came back negative. The 29-year-old will be held out of the starting nine for at least one game, with Jace Peterson handling the keystone Sunday.

  • Luis Garcia 2B | WAS

Nationals' Luis Garcia: Steps out of lineup

Garcia is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Postreports.

Garcia started the past two games after being recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, and he'll head to the bench after going 1-for-7 with an RBI and a run. Michael Chavis will take over at the keystone and bat sixth.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Not in Sunday's lineup

Gorman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

Gorman started the Cardinals' first eight games of September but will receive Sunday off after posting a .914 OPS with three homers during that span. Luken Baker will bat sixth as the designated hitter.

  • Luis Arraez 2B | SF

Marlins' Luis Arraez: Steps out of lineup

Arraez is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Arraez will receive a day off after making 28 straight starts between first and second base, though he struggled to a .257/.282/.381 slash line during that stretch. Jon Berti will handle the keystone while Yuli Gurriel starts at first base Sunday.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Reinstated early, starting Sunday

India (foot) was activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base Sunday against the Cardinals, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The 26-year-old was previously expected to make his return from the injured list Tuesday in Detroit after starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, but he'll instead rejoin Cincinnati for Sunday's series finale versus St. Louis. India has been sidelined since late July with plantar fasciitis but should operate as the Reds' primary second baseman down the stretch, though regular off days may be in store, especially given the club's glut of infield talent.

  • Jeff McNeil 2B | ATH

Mets' Jeff McNeil: Swipes bag in loss

McNeil went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 8-4 loss to the Twins.

McNeil singled in his first at-bat before swiping his first bag since Aug. 26. He would then come around to score on a Daniel Vogelbach single as the Mets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The second baseman registered multiple hits in two of his first three games to open September but has gone just 2-for-15 at the plate since then (spanning four games).

  • Alejo Lopez 2B | SEA

Reds' Alejo Lopez: Starts for scratched Marte

Lopez was a late addition to Saturday's starting lineup at second base after Noelvi Marte was scratched with a facial contusion. Lopez went 1-for-2 with an RBI and was ejected for arguing a called third strike.

Lopez made an immediate impact, preventing a run with a nice diving stop for the third out of the second inning. He then doubled home a run in the bottom half of the frame. He was later ejected along with manager David Bell in the fourth inning for arguing called strikes. Lopez joined the major-league club Saturday amid the Reds' COVID-19 outbreak.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

    Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: X-rays negative

X-rays on Marte's right knee came back negative, but his status for Sunday's game remains uncertain, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.

Marte stayed in the game Saturday after getting hit by a pitch on the right knee in the first inning but was eventually pulled in the seventh. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo wants to see how the knee progresses overnight before making a decision about Marte's status for the series finale.

  • Kolten Wong 2B | BAL

Dodgers' Kolten Wong: Swipes two bags Saturday

Wong went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases in Saturday's 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Nationals.

The second baseman nearly played hero for the Dodgers, singling home James Outman in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5 and then swiping second and third, only to be stranded when Will Smith grounded out. It was only Wong's second start since being picked up by Los Angeles, but he's appeared in four other September games as a pinch hitter and late-inning defensive replacement, going 2-for-11 overall with a homer, four RBI and Saturday's two steals.

  • Thairo Estrada 2B | BAL

Giants' Thairo Estrada: Reaches 20-steal mark

Estrada went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run, an additional RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 9-1 win over the Rockies.

Estrada opened the scoring with his first-inning homer. He reached on a fielder's choice and stole a base in the fourth, giving him 20 thefts on 25 attempts this year. The second baseman has reached 20 steals in consecutive seasons, and he's added a strong .272/.318/.417 slash line with 11 homers, 44 RBI and 55 runs scored over 100 contests in 2023.
