Buccaneers' Ted Hurst: Two grabs in starting role
Hurst brought in two of six targets for 19 yards in the Buccaneers' 24-16 preseason win over the Jets on Friday.
With Emeka Egbuka (toe), Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan (knee) all sitting out, Hurst worked as the Buccaneers' de facto No. 1 receiver on the night. The rookie third-round pick recorded his first catch for a seven-yard gain on the Buccaneers' second drive, and he added a 12-yard grab on Tampa Bay's third possession. Hurst was also targeted by Connor Bazelak on a goal-line slant on the final ball thrown his way, but the pass was a bit behind him and broken up. Hurst enters his rookie season with elevated expectations after an impressive two-year college tenure, and both Godwin and McMillan's recent injury history suggests Hurst could see plenty of opportunity in his first NFL season.

Buccaneers' Sean Tucker: Garners 23 total yards in preseason win
Tucker rushed four times for 12 yards and brought in both targets for 11 yards in the Buccaneers' 24-16 preseason win over the Jets on Friday.
Neither Bucky Irving nor Kenny Gainwell were active Friday, leaving Tucker as the starting running back. The fourth-year pro gained four yards on his first carry during Tampa Bay's three-and-out opening possession, and he ended up playing on the Buccaneers' first three drives. Tucker recorded a career-high 320 rushing yards and seven touchdowns over 17 regular-season games in 2025, and he projects to remain in a No. 3 running back role and potentially serve as a primary kickoff returner once again in 2026.

Buccaneers' Vita Vea: Trade market is active
Multiple teams have checked on Vea's (back) availability, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Despite calls from the Bills, Bears, 49ers and more, the Buccaneers remain steadfast that they will not trade Vea. The star nose tackle has expressed his wishes to leave the organization, and with many suitors interested, there is still a chance the organization changes its mind. It appears the team is still trying to organize a new deal with Vea, but it is unclear if talks have progressed at all.

Buccaneers' Jake Browning: Not participating in Friday's contest
Browning (back) will not participate in Friday's preseason opener against the Jets, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Browning strained his back during Wednesday's joint practice with the Jets. The quarterback is currently the primary backup to Baker Mayfield, so any injury will likely shut him down for an extended period of the preseason until it is deemed completely safe for him to return. In Browning's absence, Connor Bazelak and Jalon Daniels will split reps at quarterback as they compete for the No. 3 role.

Buccaneers' Emeka Egbuka: Optimism for Week 1 status
Egbuka had more tests done on his injured toe Friday, which confirmed a sprain that's stable, and the Buccaneers are optimistic that the second-year wide receiver will be available Week 1 at Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 13, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Egbuka was rolled up on by a teammate at Wednesday's practice and limped off the field, but at the time, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that the issue was deemed to be minor. Friday's testing corroborated that belief, and Egbuka now will focus on getting healthy for Tampa Bay's regular-season opener. Once Egbuka is back to 100 percent, he's expected to lead a WR group composed of Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan (knee) and rookie third-rounder Ted Hurst.

Buccaneers' Jake Browning: Still not ruled out for Friday
Coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that Browning (back) could still play in Friday's preseason game against the Jets, Jeff Dubrof of WFLA News Channel 8 reports.
Browning strained his back during Tuesday's joint practice with the Jets, but there's apparently still a chance he could suit up for the Buccaneers' preseason opener. If he can't though, Connor Bazelak would figure to be Tampa Bay's starting signal caller Friday.

Egbuka suffered a sprained toe during Wednesday's practice, and testing will determine the severity of the injury, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Egbuka limped off the practice field Wednesday after getting rolled up on by a teammate, but Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that the issue is considered to be minor. Upcoming imaging could change that tune, but Egbuka now seems destined to miss Friday's preseason game at the Jets along with QB Baker Mayfield, who is healthy but won't play in that contest.

Egbuka limped off the field to be evaluated by trainers before watching the rest of the practice from the sideline without cleats. The Bucs are planning to rest key players for Friday's preseason game versus the Jets, so Egbuka's next chance to put on his pads will be early next week at practice.

After leaving Wednesday's practice with an apparent lower-body injury, Egbuka stuck around on the sideline to watch the rest of the session, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Egbuka limped off the field Wednesday morning and met with trainers on the sideline. He didn't return to practice, but it's a good sign that he remained on the sideline rather than being taken back to the training room. Healthy or not, Egbuka isn't expected to play in Friday's preseason opener against the Jets. Tampa Bay will then resume practicing Sunday or Monday.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Egbuka was "rolled up on" by a teammate and stayed down on the field briefly before limping off under his own power. He was then brought to a trainer's table on the sideline to be examined. Afterwards, Egbuka stuck around on the sideline to watch the rest of practice -- a good sign that the training staff doesn't think his injury is serious.

Buccaneers' Bucky Irving: Making impression on new OC
Irving has impressed new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson throughout training camp, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Irving is coming off of an injury-riddled sophomore campaign in 2025, being limited to just 10 regular-season contests. The running back compiled 588 rushing yards and one touchdown over 173 carries, which was rather disappointing after he registered 1,122 yards and eight scores on 207 rushes in 2024. He was also able to secure 30 catches for 277 yards last year, including the first three receiving scores of his career. Robinson has been impressed by Irving's ability to stay connected to the ground, allowing him to leave defenders in his dust. "He's always able to change direction and that keeps him so balanced to be able to break tackles," said Robinson. The OC spent the last two seasons calling plays for Atlanta's superstar running back Bijan Robinson, and Irving will look to elevate his performance within that system.
