  • Bengals' Bryan Cook: Sidelined for preseason opener

Cook (undisclosed) has been ruled out for Thursday's preseason game against Detroit, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.

Cook has been working through an unspecified injury since Sunday. The injury will prevent him from playing in Thursday's preseason opener, and the Bengals' next exhibition game takes place Saturday, Aug. 22 against the Bears. Kyle Dugger and PJ Jules will both see more reps at safety alongside Jordan Battle while Cook is sidelined.

  • Bengals' Dax Hill: Won't play Thursday

Hill (hamstring) will not play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Lions, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.

Hill recently sustained a hamstring injury that has caused him to be sidelined for training camp practices, and he'll aim to be available for the Bengals' second preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 22 against the Bears. Tacario Davis, Josh Newton and Ja'Sir Taylor will all have the opportunity to operate in expanded roles in the secondary for as long as Hill is out of action.

  • Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase: Expected to play Thursday

Chase and other starters are scheduled to play in Thursday's preseason opener against Detroit, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor also said QB Joe Burrow and WR Tee Higgins will play. In the past two preseason openers, Burrow played a total of three drives and ended each with a TD pass, including one to Chase.

  • Bengals' Joe Burrow: Set to play in preseason opener

Burrow and other starters are scheduled to play in Thursday's preseason opener against Detroit, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

WR Ja'Marr Chase, WR Tee Higgins and DT Dexter Lawrence are also expected to play, so it sounds like all healthy starters will get some action. Last year, Burrow played two drives in Cincinnati's preseason opener, completing nine of 10 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. In the 2024 preseason opener, he played a single 12-play drive, which also ended in a TD pass.

  • Bengals' Joe Burrow: Adjusting to new offense

Burrow and the Bengals offense had its best day of training camp Sunday, Paul Dehner of The Athletic reports.

Per Dehner, the Bengals offense this year has shifted from static, pre-snap looks and shotgun formations to a scheme with more under-center motions. There have been some early hiccups in training camp, but Burrow and the offense have been better over the last couple of days, particularly in Sunday's practice when the star quarterback directed two 80-yard touchdown drives that ended with passing touchdowns to Tee Higgins and Andrei Iosivas. Burrow missed nine of 17 games last year due to turf toe and returned to action Week 13. Over the last six games of the 2025 regular season, Burrow completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 1,620 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions while turning 12 carries into 38 yards.

  • Bengals' B.J. Hill: Looks to return soon

Hill (undisclosed) was practicing with the rehab team in helmet and pads Sunday, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Hill's return to helmet and pads may mean he is on the cusp of being cleared to return from the active/PUP list. The defensive tackle has been absent with an unknown injury since late July, and a return to padded practice is a good sign as to where he is in his recovery.

  • Bengals' Bryan Cook: Absent with injury

Cook did not participate in Sunday's practice due to an undisclosed injury, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.

Cook exited Friday's session early after consulting with Bengals' trainers. The unknown issue clearly has some staying power, and it is unclear when the free safety will return to the field. The 26-year-old signed with the team in early March, looking set to be the starting free safety over PJ Jules.

  • Bengals' Dax Hill: Hamstring tightness

Hill has missed the last three practices with hamstring tightness, James Rapien of SI.com reports.

Hill is probably unlikely to get much playing time in the Bengals' first preseason game on Thursday, but the greater concern is the Bengals' corner depth heading into the season. DJ Ivey and rookie Tacario Davis are getting more reps with Hill missing time.

  • Bengals' Cashius Howell: Impressing early in camp

Howell has "been a monster in camp," particularly surprising the Bengals' coaching staff with his strength, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reports.

Howell, the Bengals' second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M, is expected to be part of a defensive end rotation for the Bengals, lining up behind Boye Mafe, Myles Murphy and likely Shemar Stewart, though Stewart's knee injury could open the door for Howell to get more early reps.

  • Bengals' Josh Kattus: Makes camp debut

The Bengals activated Kattus (undisclosed) off the active/non-football injury list Thursday.

Kattus suffered an undisclosed injury before training camp that rendered him unable to participate in the Bengals' first week of activities. The tight end has since passed his physical and was able to practice with the team Thursday. Now healthy, the undrafted free agent out of Kentucky will have to make up for lost time and make an impact to have any chance of making the 53-man roster.

  • Bengals' Chase Brown: Still growing as pass catcher

Brown has been taking some reps out wide at practice, Charlie Clifford of NBC 5 Cincinnati reports.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow said Brown has improved his pass-catching skills since last year. Already known as one of the league's better receiving backs, Brown has mostly been used on dump-offs and screens but may be able to exploit slower linebackers on other routes. Either way, he appears set for large workloads and plenty of catches after the Bengals failed to improve their backup RBs this offseason. Samaje Perine seemingly remains second on the depth chart.
