Nick Chubb RB | HOU
Browns' Nick Chubb: Progress continues
Browns GM Andrew Berry said Monday that Chubb (knee) has "a little way to go" with his rehab, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.
Chubb was spotted Friday running sprints and doing agility work, with Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer noting that team owner Jimmy Haslam "looked very pleased" to see Chubb "cutting with tremendous agility." While the reports from other Cleveland beat writers weren't quite as glowing, Zac Jackson of The Athletic agreed that it was "impressive" to see Chubb's progress both on the field and in the weight room (a viral video shortly before training camp showed the RB squatting more than 500 pounds). Neither player nor team has mentioned a timeline for Chubb coming off the active/PUP list and returning to practice, leaving him uncertain for the early part of the season despite a general sense of optimism. He had surgeries in September and then November to address ACL and MCL tears in his left knee.

Ray Davis RB | BUF
Bills' Ray Davis: Competing with Ty Johnson
Davis and Ty Johnson shared first-team reps Sunday when James Cook was absent from practice for personal reasons, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Buscaglia described it as a "pretty close to even split... with Johnson having the slight edge over Davis." It doesn't sound like either RB made the most of his opportunity; Johnson dropped a would-be TD, and Davis lost a fumble. In any case, Cook returned to practice Monday, with Johnson then exiting early due to an apparent lower-body injury. The main takeaway for now is that Davis and Johnson are competing for the second spot on the depth chart, although it's possible they could have unique/different backup roles given that the rookie is more of a power runner and the veteran more of a speed/receiving threat. The Bills drafted Davis in the fourth round, 128th overall, this spring following a prolific college career in which he ran for more than 1,000 yards for three different programs (and played 13-to-16 games at each school).

Ty Johnson RB | BUF
Bills' Ty Johnson: Exits practice injured
Johnson left Monday's practice early after an apparent injury, Alex Brasky of the Batavia Daily News reports.
Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports that Johnson and rookie Ray Davis had a "pretty close to even split" of first-team reps Sunday when starter James Cook was absent for personal reasons. Cook returned Monday, with Johnson then suffering an apparent lower-body injury not long after.

Joe Mixon RB | HOU
Texans' Joe Mixon: Misses practice again
Mixon (hamstring) didn't practice Monday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Mixon was healthy at the start of training camp but has now missed more than a week of practice, allowing Dameon Pierce to get regular work with the first-team offense. There are still questions about Pierce's fit in a zone-blocking scheme after he struggled mightily last season, potentially setting up Mixon for workloads that rival (or even surpass) what he typically handled in Cincinnati. That said, a summer hamstring injury is far from ideal, even if the Texans mostly have downplayed it to this point.

James Cook RB | BUF
Bills' James Cook: Back at practice
Cook (personal) is returning to practice Monday, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Cook missed one practice to attend to a personal matter. He's locked in as the lead back in Buffalo, leaving Ty Johnson, Ray Davis, Darrynton Evans and Frank Gore to compete for backup roles.

Jerome Ford RB | WAS
Browns' Jerome Ford: Rejoins practice
Ford (personal) returned to practice Monday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
Ford missed practice from Thursday through the weekend to attend to an unspecified personal matter. He remains the favorite to lead Cleveland's backfield if Nick Chubb (knee) isn't ready by Week 1, but it could be a committee situation with D'Onta Foreman, Pierre Strong and/or Nyheim Hines (knee) also having roles.

Bucky Irving RB | TB
Buccaneers' Bucky Irving: Tailor-made for new run scheme
Irving, who the Buccaneers selected in the fourth round out of Oregon in the 2024 NFL Draft, has looked like an ideal fit for the versatile run scheme within new offensive coordinator Liam Coen's system, Brianna Dix of the team's official site reports.
The rookie surpassed the 1,000-yard mark on the ground in each of his last two seasons with the Ducks, making him quite the potential value pick in the fourth round. In his first pro season, Irving is expected to fill a solid complementary role alongside Rachaad White, who he boasts a very similar skill set to, albeit at a slighter frame of 5-foot-10, 195 pounds. Irving also is very familiar with many of the run concepts in Coen's scheme from his college days, and Dix notes the rookie has already showcased his receiving acumen on screen passes over the first few practices while flashing strong suddenness, change-of-direction ability and above-average contact balance.

Terrell Jennings RB | NE
Patriots' Terrell Jennings: Passes physical Sunday
Jennings (undisclosed) passed his physical Sunday and was activated from the active/PUP list.
Jennings opened training camp on the sidelines with an undisclosed injury but appears to be all set to return to the practice field now. The running back has an uphill battle to crack the Patriots' active roster in 2024, so he'll look to make up for the lost time in the coming days.

David Montgomery RB | HOU
Lions' David Montgomery: Geared up for Year 2 with Detroit
Montgomery is entering his second campaign as a primary backfield option for the Lions.
Montgomery signed with Detroit ahead of the 2023 campaign, turning 219 carries into 1,015 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns, while also securing 16 receptions for 117 yards over 14 games with the Lions. The running back operated in the more "traditional" role in the backfield while Jahmyr Gibbs handled more of the receiving work at the position. Although Montgomery had a career low in receptions, his role as the bruiser with Detroit has proven to be a fruitful one over the last two years, with Jamaal Williams scoring 17 touchdowns on the ground for the Lions in 2022. With Gibbs' ADP in the first or second rounds of fantasy drafts, Montgomery's ADP sits around the mid-60s, providing great value to fantasy managers.

Demetric Felton RB | WAS
Bears' Demetric Felton: Headed to Windy City
The Bears signed Felton to a contract Sunday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Felton spent 2023 as a member of the Bengals' practice squad after failing to make the team's 53-man roster at the end of training camp. After being selected by the Browns in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Felton played in 24 regular-season games for Cleveland over the next two seasons. He has accrued just 20 rushing yards and 189 receiving yards in his NFL career, and he will compete with Travis Homer and Ian Wheeler for the fourth spot on the Bears' running back depth chart.
