Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Returning to big leagues

The Diamondbacks recalled Tawa (rib) from Triple-A Reno on Monday.

Tawa was placed on Reno's 7-day injured list Aug. 2 due to a fractured rib, but he was activated Wednesday and will now join the big club to contribute as a utility man. He'll join Arizona's 28-man active roster as a replacement for first baseman Tyler Locklear (elbow), who was placed on the 10-day IL.

  • Brock Stewart RP | LAD

Dodgers' Brock Stewart: Throws bullpen session

Stewart (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Saturday and could face live hitters this week, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

Stewart has been sidelined since Aug. 12 while dealing with right shoulder inflammation, and he has now taken a significant step in his recovery. The right-hander is hopeful that one rehab outing would be enough, and he said Monday that he has felt good since his second cortisone shot in late August.

  • Alex Vesia RP | LAD

Dodgers' Alex Vesia: Targeting Tuesday return

Vesia (oblique) expects to be activated from the 15-day injured list before Tuesday's game against the Rockies, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Vesia hasn't appeared in a big-league game since Aug. 21 while on the mend from a right oblique strain, but all has gone well while on a rehab assignment. He should immediately slot back in as a high-leverage arm for the Dodgers upon his return from the shelf.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Hopeful for Tuesday return

Manager Dave Roberts stated he's hopeful Smith (hand) will return to the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rockies, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Smith isn't in the starting nine for Monday's matchup due to a bruised right hand but it closing in on a return. Assuming he gets the green light to start behind the dish Tuesday, Ben Rortvedt would return to the backup catcher role.

  • Tommy Edman 2B | LAD

Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Expected to be activated Wednesday

Edman (ankle) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Edman began a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, going 4-for-14 with a run scored over five contests with the team heading into Monday. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since early August while nursing a right ankle sprain, and once activated he should get work at second base while also getting starts over Michael Conforto in the outfield.

  • Kyle Stowers LF | MIA

Marlins' Kyle Stowers: Undergoes imaging on side

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Monday that Stowers (oblique) underwent imaging on his right side Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Stowers has been out since mid-August with a left oblique strain, but it was soreness in his right side that kept him out of his last two scheduled rehab games over the weekend and necessitated imaging. The results of his imaging aren't yet known. Stowers had been expected to return from the 15-day injured list this week, but his status is now in limbo.

  • Dodgers' Chuckie Robinson: Optioned to Triple-A

The Dodgers optioned Robinson to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.

Robinson was called up by the Dodgers on Saturday to serve as an emergency catcher due to the absences of Will Smith (hand) and Dalton Rushing (shin). Even with Rushing on the 10-day IL and Smith day-to-day with his injury, the Dodgers needed to make room on the 28-man roster for a returning Max Muncy (oblique). Robinson will head back to Oklahoma City, where he has slashed .259/.344/.361 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 189 plate appearances.

  • Max Muncy 3B | LAD

Dodgers' Max Muncy: Activated from IL, starting Monday

The Dodgers activated Muncy (oblique) from the 10-day injured list, and he'll start at third base and bat out of the cleanup spot against the Rockies on Monday.

Muncy landed on the 10-day IL in mid-August due to a right oblique strain. He went 2-for-7 with two walks in three rehab games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, and the veteran third baseman has progressed enough in his recovery to return to the Dodgers' lineup for Monday's series opener. Catcher Chuckie Robinson was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Chase Burns SP | CIN

Reds' Chase Burns: Slated to return Friday

The Reds intend to activate Burns (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Burns was cleared to resume throwing in mid-August and progressed to facing live hitters in early September. He's in the final stages of his recovery from a Grade 1 right elbow strain, and the 22-year-old looks poised to skip a rehab assignment and return to the majors as long as he gets through Tuesday's bullpen session without suffering a setback, per Wittenmyer. Burns started in all eight of his appearances with the Reds prior to his injury and posted a 5.24 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 34.1 innings, but manager Terry Francona has hinted at Burns working out of the bullpen for the tail end of the season.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Throwing bullpen session Monday

Whisenhunt (back) will throw a bullpen session Monday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

It appears to be the first time Whisenhunt has thrown from the bump since he landed on the 15-day injured list at the end of August with a back strain. Whisenhunt is eligible for activation this weekend, and it's possible he'll return then if the Giants don't think he needs a rehab start.
