Julian Merryweather RP | MIN
Cubs' Julian Merryweather: Returns from 60-day IL
The Cubs activated Merryweather (ribs) from the 60-day injured list Monday.
Merryweather has missed most of this season with a rib stress fracture but is ready to go after allowing one run with a 5:0 K:BB over 4.2 innings during his rehab assignment. The hard-throwing right-hander should handle high-leverage spots for the Cubs, though he might be eased back into such situations.

Noah Davis SP | PIT
Rockies' Noah Davis: Back in majors
The Rockies recalled Davis from Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday.
Davis will join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for German Marquez (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Marquez had been in line to start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, but after he tossed three innings and 71 pitches in his most recent outing for Albuquerque on Friday, Davis might not be available to fill the opening in the rotation on three days' rest. Instead, the right-hander could provide length out of the bullpen. Davis allowed three runs in one three-inning relief appearance with the Rockies earlier this season and holds a 5.86 ERA and 59:29 K:BB over 58.1 innings in 2024 with Albuquerque.

German Marquez SP | SD
Rockies' German Marquez: Back to IL with elbow inflammation
The Rockies placed Marquez on the 15-day injured list Monday with right elbow inflammation.
After completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery, Marquez was cleared to return from the 60-day injured list July 14, but he made just one start before going back on the shelf with another elbow-related issue. The fact that the Rockies are classifying Marquez's injury as inflammation rather than a strain is encouraging, but he could still need more than the minimum 15 days to move past the issue. Noah Davis was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to replace Marquez on the active roster, and he could also be a candidate to slide into Marquez's spot in the rotation Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Whit Merrifield 2B | ATL
Braves' Whit Merrifield: Viewed as day-to-day
Merrifield is considered day-to-day after he had a finger on his right hand struck by an errant groundball while he was taking part in defensive drills prior to Monday's game against the Reds, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Merrifield has been cleared of a fracture, but he may be dealing with some soreness or bruising to the digit. The veteran utility player signed a one-year deal with Atlanta on Monday and is expected to provide depth, particularly at second base behind rookie Nacho Alvarez, once he moves past the finger issue.

River Ryan SP | DET
Dodgers' River Ryan: Added to roster ahead of debut
The Dodgers selected Ryan's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.
Ryan is expected to start Monday against the Giants in what will be his MLB debut. The 25-year-old right-hander missed the first two months of the minor-league season while battling shoulder fatigue but has looked sharp during his brief time with Oklahoma City, collecting a 2.76 ERA and 19:6 K:BB over 16.1 innings. Ryan could pitch again this weekend in Houston if the Dodgers elect to maintain a six-man rotation, but it could depend on how he fares Monday.

Whit Merrifield 2B | ATL
Braves' Whit Merrifield: Being evaluated for finger injury
Merrifield is being evaluated by Atlanta's medical staff for a finger injury after being struck in the right hand by a ball while warming up prior to Monday's game against the Reds, Kevin McAlpin of 680 The Fan Atlanta reports.
Merrifield has yet to play for Atlanta after signing with the club earlier Monday, and he might already be banged up. The veteran utility player wasn't in Atlanta's lineup for Monday's game anyway but had been slated to be available off the bench.

Brandon Marsh LF | PHI
Phillies' Brandon Marsh: Exiting starting nine Monday
Marsh is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Twins.
Twins starter Bailey Ober is a right-hander, and while he owns relatively even splits for his career, he's been far more effective against left-handed hitters (.279 wOBA) than right-handed hitters (.324 wOBA) in 2024. The lefty-hitting Marsh will head to the bench for the second game in a row as a result, paving the way for Weston Wilson to draw another start in left field.

Rece Hinds RF | BAL
Reds' Rece Hinds: Losing playing time
Hinds is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta.
Since opening his big-league career earlier this month with nine extra-base hits and two stolen bases in his first six games, Hinds' sizzling bat has cooled off. In his subsequent three starts, he has gone 1-for-12 with three strikeouts, and the downturn in performance may have already cost him an everyday role. While Hinds should still have a regular spot in the lineup versus lefties while he's up with the big club, he'll take a seat against a right-hander (Reynaldo Lopez) for the second day in a row. Will Benson, Stuart Fairchild and Jake Fraley looks to be the Reds' preferred outfield configuration versus righties at the moment.
