  • Xavier Edwards 2B | MIA

Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Not starting Saturday

Edwards (back) is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Cubs.

Edwards left in the third inning of Friday's game due to lower-back discomfort that he experienced when stealing second base. Vidal Brujan will start at shortstop Saturday and bat eighth against Cubs southpaw Shota Imanaga.

  • Tyler Gilbert RP | CHW

Phillies' Tyler Gilbert: Sent back to minors

The Phillies optioned Gilbert to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday.

Gilbert will be pushed off the big-league roster in order to make room for Ranger Suarez (back), who was reinstated off the injured list. The 30-year-old Gilbert gave up one earned run over two innings during his lone appearance Friday, and he owns a 2.45 ERA through 33 frames with Lehigh Valley.

  • Ranger Suarez SP | BOS

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Activated ahead of start

The Phillies reinstated Suarez (back) from the 15-day injured list Saturday.

Suarez landed on the injured list in late July with lower-back soreness, and he'll now return after nearly a month to start Saturday's game against the Royals. He didn't pitch in a rehab game in the minors during his recovery, so there's a good chance he'll be working under some sort of pitch count during his first start since July 22. Tyler Gilbert was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

  • Pirates' Bryan De La Cruz: Performance picking up

De La Cruz went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI on Friday against the Reds.

De La Cruz delivered an RBI double in the fifth inning to start a rally for the Pirates. He had a disastrous start with his new team, collecting only two hits across his first 30 at-bats. However, in 10 games since, he's gone 13-for-37 with eight RBI, five runs scored and three doubles.

  • Julian Aguiar RP | CHC

Reds' Julian Aguiar: Awarded another start

Aguiar is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Pirates at PNC Park, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The rookie right-hander will make his second turn through the rotation after covering four innings in his MLB debut in Toronto this past Monday, when he took a no-decision after striking out two batters while giving up two earned runs on four hits and one walk. With Hunter Greene (elbow) and Andrew Abbott (shoulder) recently joining Graham Ashcraft (elbow) and Brandon Williamson (shoulder) on the injured list, Aguiar should have the opportunity to make additional starts beyond Saturday.

  • Rowdy Tellez 1B | ATL

Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Reaches base three times

Tellez went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Friday against the Reds.

Tellez has struggled to hit for power since the All-Star break, as he has only nine extra-base hits -- including two homers -- in 28 games. As a result, he's driven in only 11 and scored seven runs in that span. On a positive note, he's hitting .268 across 82 at-bats so far in the second half, improving his average to .249 on the campaign.

  • Joey Bart C | CHW

    Pirates' Joey Bart: Scores twice

Bart went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored Friday against the Reds.

Bart has seven multi-hit performances across 18 starts in August, which has translated to a .304/./351/.565 line. He also has five home runs, 14 RBI and 14 runs scored in that span and should continue to serve as Pittsburgh's primary catcher to close the season.

  • Rhys Hoskins 1B | CLE

Brewers' Rhys Hoskins: Drives in four in rout

Hoskins went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Friday's 11-3 win over the A's.

The first baseman got the rout started with a three-run shot off JP Sears in the second inning. Hoskins snapped an 0-for-20 slump with the long ball, and his four RBI on the night tied his season high. The 31-year-old is slashing .217/.302/.425 through 101 contests with 21 homers and 64 RBI, and while he hasn't returned to his Phillies peak, Hoskins has at least stayed mostly healthy in his first season back from the ACL tear that cost him the entire 2023 campaign.

  • Aaron Civale RP | CHC

Brewers' Aaron Civale: Inefficient in no-decision

Civale came away with a no-decision in Friday's 11-3 win over the A's, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out three.

The Brewers struck for five runs in the second inning and never looked back, but Civale couldn't stick around long enough to pick up the easy win, tossing 50 of 82 pitches for strikes before getting the hook. The right-hander has completed at least five innings in only three of six starts since the All-Star break, posting a 4.50 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and mediocre 22:12 K:BB through 30 innings over that stretch, but Milwaukee doesn't have any better healthy options for his rotation spot. Civale will try to provide more length in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Giants.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Swats homer No. 10

Donovan went 1-for-3 with two walks, a solo home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 6-1 win over the Twins.

He took Jorge Alcala deep in the sixth inning, snapping a 27-game homerless drought. Donovan has remained a fixture in the Cardinals' lineup this season, but the results have been less than stellar -- the 27-year-old is slashing .266/.333/.393 with 10 home runs, four steals, 50 runs and 56 RBI in 121 contests.
