The Padres recalled Cosgrove from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Cosgrove has allowed 19 earned runs over just 14.2 innings in the majors this season, but he'll return to San Diego nonetheless to give the Friars a left-handed bullpen arm while fellow southpaw Martin Perez is on paternity leave. The 28-year-old Cosgrove will almost certainly be limited to low-leverage situations while in the big leagues.

Hernandez (ankle) is starting in left field and batting cleanup Wednesday against the Cubs.

The 31-year-old is returning to action Wednesday after sitting out four games due to a left ankle contusion, which he suffered Friday versus the Guardians when he was hit by a pitch. Hernandez, who has an .819 OPS with 28 homers in 138 games this season, is reclaiming a prominent spot in the Los Angeles lineup for the stretch run.

Single-A Palm Beach placed Showalter on its 7-day injured list Aug. 16 with an unspecified injury.

Showalter, 20, posted a 2.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 59 strikeouts over 34.1 innings before being shut down with the injury. The Cardinals appear committed to developing him as a reliever, as he had made each of his 24 appearances out of the bullpen this season.

Kelly was removed from Wednesday's start against the Rangers in the fifth inning with an undisclosed injury, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

The Diamondbacks should provide an update on Kelly's condition after the game, but he has dealt with cramping multiple times in the past and was seen shaking his leg during a visit from the trainer. Kelly struck out three and was charged with two runs over four-plus innings before being removed.

Vargas will start at third base and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

Vargas has now picked up just two starts through the Nationals' first nine games of the month, with both coming against left-handed pitchers. He'll be filling in Wednesday for Luis Garcia, who will cede the keystone to Jose Tena while Vargas covers Tena's usual spot in the infield.

Garcia is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

Garcia will be joined on the bench by fellow left-handed hitter Joel Gallo as the Nationals stock up on extra right-handed bats to counter Atlanta southpaw Max Fried. The switch-hitting Ildemaro Vargas will enter the lineup in Garcia's stead, manning third base while batting eighth.

Gallo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

Though he'll take a seat against southpaw Max Fried in the series finale, the lefty-hitting Gallo looks to have recaptured a strong-side platoon role. Gallo has started in each of the Nationals' six matchups with right-handed pitchers in September, though he's mustered just one hit and three walks in 16 at-bats on the month.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that he expects Realmuto (knee) to return to the lineup Friday versus the Mets, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Realmuto remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Rays and will end up getting a full week off as he recovers from a left knee contusion, an injury that he suffered when he fouled a ball off himself last Friday in Miami. Fortunately for Realmuto, follow-up tests revealed no structural damage to the knee, but the Phillies will continue to hold him out for a couple more days while he waits for the swelling to calm down. Garrett Stubbs and Aramis Garcia have been holding down the fort at catcher while Realmuto has been out of action.

The Phillies scratched Schwarber from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays while he continues to experience soreness in his left elbow, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Schwarber was removed in the fourth inning of Tuesday's 9-4 win, after he looked to have injured his elbow while diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt the inning prior. Though the Phillies initially penciled Schwarber into the lineup Wednesday, manager Rob Thomson said that the designated hitter is still experiencing soreness in his elbow when he swings. The Phillies have Thursday off, so the club is seemingly hopeful that Schwarber will be ready to serve as the DH in Friday's series opener versus the Mets after two full days of rest.

Kelenic is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Kelenic appeared to recapture a strong-side platoon role in left field earlier this month, but he'll hit the bench against a right-hander (Jake Irvin) while the right-handed-hitting Ramon Laureano takes Kelenic's spot in the outfield. Through his first six games of September, Kelenic has gone 5-for-19 with two home runs, two walks, five RBI, four runs and one stolen base.
