Petersen could be part of a closing committee for the Marlins if Pete Fairbanks (hand) requires another IL stint, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Fairbanks left Monday's game with a recurrence of a nerve issue in his pitching hand, a condition which first landed him on the IL in late April. Petersen, who leads Miami with 22 holds on the season, figures to be in the mix for closing opportunities in Fairbanks' absence, along with Calvin Faucher and Josh Ekness. "I think we'll just go into each day with -- on the pitching side -- what we have available and kind of what we can ask of them, and where we think it's the best place to go put guys," manager Clayton McCullough said after Monday's game. "[The] good thing is that a number of our guys have experienced pitching in a lot of different spots. So I think we'll just lean on that and go out there with the ones that we have available each day."

Ekness, who worked the eighth inning Monday but got charged with a blown save after allowing the tying run in an eventual 4-2 loss to the Red Sox, figures to be in the mix for closing opportunities in Fairbanks' absence, along with Michael Petersen and Calvin Faucher. "I think we'll just go into each day with -- on the pitching side -- what we have available and kind of what we can ask of them, and where we think it's the best place to go put guys," manager Clayton McCullough said after Monday's game. "[The] good thing is that a number of our guys have experienced pitching in a lot of different spots. So I think we'll just lean on that and go out there with the ones that we have available each day." Through his first 15 appearances and 16 big-league innings this season, Ekness has a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 11:7 K:BB with one win, one save and one hold.

Zuber gave up a run on two hits in one-third of an inning during Monday's loss to the Red Sox.

Summoned from the bullpen with one on and nobody out in the ninth inning of a 2-2 tie after Pete Fairbanks (hand) had to exit the game, Zuber allowed the inherited runner to score on an Anthony Seigler triple before Nick Sogard added an RBI single. Fairbanks seems likely to head back to the IL due to a recurrence of a nerve issue in his pitching hand, but Zuber would likely be behind Josh Ekness, Michael Petersen and Calvin Faucher in the pecking order for save chances should that happen. On the season, Zuber's posted a 3.62 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 30:6 K:BB over 27.1 innings with two wins, six holds and one save in 31 appearances.

The Cardinals will recall Gorman from Triple-A Memphis prior to Tuesday's game versus the Orioles, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

He will take the roster spot vacated by the injured Masyn Winn (thumb). Gorman was the Cardinals' Opening Day third baseman but got sent down in mid-June after slashing .194/.279/.318 with a 32.3 percent strikeout rate in his first 62 games. He's hit seven homers with a .902 OPS in seven contests with Memphis in August, but that's also come with a 37.3 percent strikeout rate. Gorman is a candidate for some reps at third base and perhaps second base in St. Louis, but his playing time is not guaranteed.

Winn (thumb) is expected to be placed on the injured list Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

The 24-year-old shortstop sustained the injury last Tuesday in Cincinnati and attempted to play through it the following day, but he was lifted from that contest and has sat out the past four games. The full extent of the injury has yet to be disclosed after undergoing an MRI and CT scan Sunday, but the Cardinals are hopeful that it's not a season-ending injury for Winn, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Nolan Gorman is being called up from Triple-A Memphis to round out St. Louis' roster.

The Dodgers optioned Gervase to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.

Gervase was promoted Friday but did not make an appearance during his brief time with the big club. He's clearing off the roster to make room for the return of Tyler Glasnow (back), who will start Tuesday's game versus Atlanta.

Padres manager Craig Stammen said after Monday's loss to the Pirates that Machado is dealing with a bruise on the inside of his index finger, Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Machado was in noticeable discomfort during the contest, with Stammen noting that the finger bothers Machado when he hits the ball off the end of the bat. The third baseman remained in Monday's game and plans to wear a sleeve to protect the finger moving forward. Machado went 0-for-3 with two walks Monday.

Williamson (shoulder) will make a sixth rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Louisville, MLB.com reports.

Williamson had a couple of short appearances during his rehab, including a rain-shortened outing, which suppressed the buildup of his pitch count and likely led to a sixth rehab start. The left-hander sports a 5.11 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 12.1 rehab innings.

Carroll went 0-for-3 with a walk and two steals in Monday's 7-0 loss to the Cubs.

One of the few bright spots from Monday's shutout was Carroll's two steals in the fourth inning. Those thefts upped his season total 20, the fourth straight year he's reached that threshold.

Kelly and the Diamondbacks believe that Cubs third-base coach Quintin Berry was stealing pitches and relaying signs to hitters in Monday's 7-0 loss, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. "Stealing signs is as old as baseball, I think it's a little [expletive] when it comes from the coach," Kelly said.

While Kelly noted that he considers it fair game for players on the field to recognize tipped pitches, he acknowledged that he needs to review what he's doing to better conceal his offerings. The Cubs weren't the only team to get the better of Kelly of late; the right-hander is 0-4 with a 7.46 ERA and 1.82 WHIP across 25.1 innings over his five August starts.
