Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Pushed to Sunday due to shoulder

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that Wheeler's next start will be pushed back from Friday to Sunday in Texas while the right-hander manages shoulder stiffness, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Wheeler felt some stiffness following his most recent start in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Tigers. He was sent for an MRI -- which came back negative -- and the hurler was able to play catch Wednesday. The Phillies don't appear concerned that the shoulder could be a lingering issue for Wheeler, but fantasy managers should nonetheless keep a eye on news pertaining to the 35-year-old leading up to Sunday. Assuming he makes it through his between-starts bullpen session without issue, Wheeler isn't expected to face any restrictions Sunday.

  • Matt McLain 2B | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Exiting starting nine

McLain is not in the lineup for Wednesday's tilt against the Cubs.

McLain looks to be receiving a routine day off after starting in each of the previous 11 contests. Gavin Lux will get the nod at second base as the Reds try to complete the sweep.

  • Grant McCray CF | SF

Giants' Grant McCray: Hitting bench Wednesday

McCray is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

After making three straight starts against right-handed pitching, the left-handed-hitting McCray took a seat in Tuesday's 8-1 win while the Pirates sent righty Mike Burrows to the hill. Jerar Encarnacion started in right field in McCray's stead and went 1-for-5 with a solo home run, and will now stick in the lineup for a second straight contest while southpaw Andrew Heaney takes the mound for Pittsburgh. McCray has gone just 2-for-13 with eight strikeouts since getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento, so it wouldn't be surprising if he lost hold of a strong-side platoon role and ceded regular duties in right field to Encarnacion.

  • Dominic Smith DH | ATL

Giants' Dominic Smith: Taking seat Wednesday

Smith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Wilmer Flores (hamstring) is still nursing an injury and will remain on the bench for a fifth straight game, but because the Pirates are sending a lefty (Andrew Heaney) to the hill, the left-handed-hitting Smith will exit the starting nine. Smith had been included in the lineup in each of the past four games as a replacement for Flores, going 4-for-18 with a home run, five RBI and three runs.

  • Giants' Andrew Knizner: Filling in for resting Bailey

Knizner will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

With top backstop Patrick Bailey resting for the day game after a night game, Knizner will step in behind the dish for his 17th start of the season. Knizner has put together a .167/.216/.229 slash line with one home run, two RBI and seven runs over 52 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Idle Wednesday

Bailey is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Bailey will receive a breather for the matinee contest after he started behind the dish in each of the Giants' previous three games. Andrew Knizner will handle catching duties for San Francisco on Wednesday.

  • Mets' Justin Hagenman: Rejoins big club

The Mets recalled Hagenman from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Hagenman has made three starts and one relief appearance for the Mets this season, allowing eight runs (seven earned) with a 13:1 K:BB over 12.1 frames. The right-hander will provide the Mets bullpen with some length during his latest stint in the majors.

  • Dominic Hamel RP | NYY

Mets' Dom Hamel: Sent back to minors

The Mets optioned Hamel to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Hamel was up with the Mets for two days but didn't make his MLB debut. He'll be replaced on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen by right-hander Justin Hagenman, who was recalled from Syracuse.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Remains out, hopes to avoid IL

Flores (hamstring) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

For the fifth game in a row, Flores will remain on the bench while he contends with a tight left hamstring, but Slusser relays that the Giants remain hopeful that with the help of an off day Thursday, the veteran first baseman will avoid a trip to the injured list. With Flores sitting out once again, Rafael Devers will serve as the Giants' designated hitter, though Casey Schmitt will replace the left-handed-hitting Dominic Smith at first base while the Pirates send southpaw Andrew Heaney to the hill.

  • Ronny Mauricio 2B | NYM

Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Taking seat Wednesday

Mauricio is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Guardians.

Mauricio had drawn nine straight starts at third base against right-handed pitching, but he'll begin Wednesday's contest on the bench as the Guardians send righty Gavin Williams to the bump. Brett Baty will patrol the hot corner and bat ninth for the Mets.
