  • Payton Tolle SP | BOS

Red Sox's Payton Tolle: Makes relief appearance

Tolle allowed one unearned run on three hits while striking out four over three relief innings in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Athletics.

Tolle, who last pitched eight days ago, made his first appearance as a reliever after the team announced Wednesday that the left-hander would be shifting to the bullpen. Boston manager Alex Cora gave starter Brayan Bello the hook after 70 pitches and four innings, as the Red Sox have slipped and are just 1.5 games ahead of the surging Guardians for the final wild-card spot. Tolle didn't get any help from Trevor Story, who committed two errors in the game.

  • Roman Anthony OF | BOS

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Doing non-baseball activities

Anthony (oblique) is walking on a treadmill and riding an exercise bike, MLB.com reports. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday the rookie is feeling less sore.

There hasn't been much news about Anthony since he landed on the injured list Sept. 3, so this update provides some hope he can return before the end of the regular season to help Boston's playoff push. The Red Sox are 5-8 since Anthony was added to the IL, and the team is just 1.5 games ahead of Cleveland for the final wild-card spot in the AL after losing two of three to the Athletics at Fenway Park.

  • Jhonkensy Noel OF | BAL

Guardians' Jhonkensy Noel: Goes deep in win

Noel went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 3-1 win over Detroit.

Noel turned on a Tarik Skubal changeup in the fourth inning, sending the ball 411 feet into the seats in left field. It was the second homer this week for Big Christmas and third in 12 appearances since being recalled from the minors as part of September roster expansion. Noel is part of a rotation in right field along with C.J. Kayfus and Nolan Jones.

  • Jose Ramirez 3B | CLE

Guardians' Jose Ramirez: Supplies go-ahead hit

Ramirez went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Tigers.

Ramirez provided the decisive blow in the seventh inning with a two-run homer into the right field stands at Comerica Park, completing Cleveland's sweep of the first-place Tigers. The streaky Guardians, which have won seven in a row, are now 3.5 games back in the AL Central and 1.5 out of a wild card. The home run was the 29th for Ramirez, who also has 80 RBI, 39 steals and 96 runs scored over 148 contests.

  • Andres Munoz RP | SEA

Mariners' Andres Munoz: Collects three Ks in save

Munoz earned the save Thursday against the Royals, striking out three and allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.

Tasked with protecting a two-run lead, Munoz worked around a Vinnie Pasquantino double and a hit batter to lock down his 36th save of the season. It was just the second time this year that the right-hander has struck out three batters in an appearance. After a rocky stretch in which Munoz allowed runs in three of five outings, he's now strung together six consecutive scoreless appearances. The 26-year-old has been one of the league's top closers this season, ranking third in MLB in saves while carrying a 1.54 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 78:25 K:BB across 58.1 innings.

  • Royals' Stephen Kolek: Dominates despite loss

Kolek (5-6) took the loss Thursday against the Mariners, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk while striking out eight over 7.1 innings.

Kolek was nearly flawless outside of the fourth inning, when he gave up the only two hits he allowed all game -- the second being an RBI double to Jorge Polanco that accounted for the lone earned run against him. Despite the tough-luck loss, the right-hander has been outstanding since being acquired by Kansas City, posting a 1.67 ERA and an 18:3 K:BB across 27 innings while going at least six frames and yielding no more than two runs in each of his four starts. Even so, the 28-year-old has managed to secure just one win in that stretch. Kolek is slated for a tougher assignment in his next outing against the Dodgers, who rank near the top of MLB in most offensive categories in September.

  • Luis Castillo SP | SEA

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Blanks Royals in 10th win

Castillo (10-8) earned the win Thursday against the Royals, allowing three hits and striking out three across six scoreless innings.

Castillo allowed only three baserunners through his six innings of work, leaning heavily on his breaking pitches -- mixing in 20 sliders and 16 changeups -- to induce weak contact. The right-hander was at 40 pitches through two innings but settled in nicely, needing just 84 pitches overall to log his third straight quality start. Castillo has been overall sharp in September with a 2.86 ERA across four outings and will look to keep it going in his final start of the regular season next week against the Rockies. While Colorado has reached base at the lowest rate in MLB this month, the hitter-friendly environment at Coors Field is always a factor.

  • Brent Rooker DH | ATH

Athletics' Brent Rooker: Posts third straight 30-homer year

Rooker went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 5-3 win over Boston.

That makes it three long balls in Rooker's past five games, and Thursday's blast gave him his third consecutive 30-homer campaign. The slugging outfielder has been an excellent four-category fantasy contributor in 2025, hitting .267 with 87 RBI and 91 runs scored to go with a career-high 40 doubles over 599 at-bats. Rooker has benefitted significantly from seeing around half of his action at hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park -- he has an .891 OPS at home versus a .779 OPS on the road.

  • David Hamilton 3B | MIL

Red Sox's David Hamilton: Smacks rare homer

Hamilton went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Athletics.

The homer was Hamilton's fifth of the season and his first in the month of September. The lefty-hitting infielder has struggled mightily at the plate in 2025, and he has been unable to take on a strong-side platoon role over the righty-hitting Romy Gonzalez at second base. Hamilton will likely continue to be used primarily as a pinch runner and defensive replacement, batting .201 with four doubles, 17 RBI and 21 stolen bases over 87 games.

  • Angels' Sebastian Rivero: Notches steal in loss

Rivero went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Brewers.

This was the first career steal for Rivero. The catcher is batting .192 with two RBI, four runs scored, two doubles and no home runs over nine games in the majors with the Angels this year, his first taste of big-league action since 2022 with the Royals. He'll compete with Logan O'Hoppe for playing time over the last three series of the season.
