Rangers' Jonah Heim: Receiving Friday off

Heim is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox.

It's the second straight contest on the bench for the 29-year-old after a run of five straight starts. Heim has a .618 OPS through 93 games this season, and he could have less of an everyday role after the Rangers acquired Carson Kelly, who is starting Friday, from the Tigers last weekend.

  • Adolis Garcia RF | PHI

Rangers' Adolis Garcia: On bench Friday

Garcia is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox.

Garcia started the previous 19 games but will receive a day off after he posted a .524 OPS during that span. The 31-year-old has 18 homers through 104 games but has otherwise struggled at the plate this season with a .210/.273/.389 slash line. Ezequiel Duran will start in right field and bat seventh Friday.

  • Luis Medina RP | ATH

Athletics' Luis Medina: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Athletics transferred Medina (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Friday.

The move comes with Medina scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery Tuesday, and the procedure will likely keep the 25-year-old right-hander out for the 2025 campaign, too. Across his eight starts this season, Medina went 2-4 with a 5.18 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 32:20 K:BB across 40 innings. The move makes room on Oakland's 40-man roster for infielder Darell Hernaiz (ankle), who was reinstated from the 60-day IL.

  • Joshua Lowe LF | LAA

Rays' Josh Lowe: Sitting down versus lefty

Lowe isn't in the Rays' lineup for Friday's game versus Houston, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

With southpaw Yusei Kikuchi slated to take the mound for the Astros, the lefty-hitting Lowe will step out of Friday's lineup. His absence will allow Jonny DeLuca to pick up a start in right field and bat sixth.

  • David Hamilton 3B | MIL

Red Sox's David Hamilton: Taking seat Friday

Hamilton is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Rangers, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Hamilton started the previous three games but has just three hits in 33 at-bats since the All-Star break, and he'll sit Friday versus Texas righty Jose Urena. Nick Sogard will make his major-league debut at second base, batting eighth.

  • Darell Hernaiz SS | ATH

Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Reinstated from IL

Oakland reinstated Hernaiz (ankle) from the 60-day injured list Friday.

Hernaiz had been on the injured list since May 8 due to a left ankle sprain. He started his rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas on July 20, and across his nine games, he slashed .364/.432/.545 with two stolen bases, three doubles, one home run and two RBI across 37 plate appearances. To make room for Hernaiz on the 40-man roster, the Athletics transferred right-hander Luis Medina (elbow) to the 60-day injured list. Hernaiz had been given a brief look in an everyday role prior to landing on the IL, but he may have to settle for a utility role upon his return with Zack Gelof, Abraham Toro and Max Schuemann seemingly locked in as Oakland's starters at second base, third base and shortstop, respectively.

  • Taylor Walls SS | TB

    Rays' Taylor Walls: Idle Friday

Walls isn't in the Rays' lineup for Friday's game against the Astros, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Walls has gone just 1-for-14 with nine strikeouts over his last five games, and he'll now get a day off to regroup. Jose Caballero will slide over to cover shortstop while Curtis Mead starts at the hot corner.

  • Ben Rortvedt C | LAD

Rays' Ben Rortvedt: Sitting versus lefty

Rortvedt isn't in the Rays' lineup Friday against the Astros, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Rortvedt will retreat to the bench Friday while left-hander Yusei Kikuchi starts on the mound for Houston. Alex Jackson will catch instead for Shane Baz and bat ninth.

  • Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Absence continuing Friday

Kirk (elbow) is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Yankees.

It's the second straight game out of the lineup for Kirk after being hit by a pitch in the left elbow Tuesday against the Orioles. Brian Serven will receive another look behind the plate in the series opener in the Bronx.

  • Bailey Horn P | DET

Red Sox's Bailey Horn: Optioned to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Horn to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Chris Henrique of Beyond the Monster reports.

The transaction clears a roster spot for Luis Garcia, who was acquired at the trade deadline. Horn holds a 6.39 ERA over nine relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2024.
