The Rays placed Fairchild on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to a right oblique strain.

Tampa Bay acquired Fairchild in a trade with Atlanta on Tuesday, but he'll now have to wait until August to make his Rays debut after being shelved with the injury. The Rays recalled utility man Coco Montes from Triple-A Durham to fill the open spot on the big club's bench.

Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino said that Mountcastle (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Norfolk, Brendan Mortensen of MASNSports.com reports.

Mouncastle won't be eligible for activation until July 30, so he'll likely stick around in Norfolk through the next week to compile at-bats before the Orioles add him back to the roster. Before going down in late May with a right hamstring strain, Mountcastle had gotten off to a poor start to the season at the plate, batting just .246/.280/.348 with two home runs in 200 plate appearances. An everyday role may not be waiting for Mountcastle once he's reinstated, though his outlook for playing time would improve if the non-contending Orioles move impending free agent Ramon Laureano prior to the July 31 trade deadline.

Eder (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Angels were downed 6-3 by the Mets, coughing up five runs on seven hits and a walk over six relief innings. He struck out seven.

The left-hander entered the game in the third inning as the third Angels pitcher to take the mound, and Eder stuck around to the bitter end, tossing 67 of 98 pitches for strikes but serving up a three-run homer to Pete Alonso in the third that put the Mets in the lead for good. Eder has taken the ball every fifth day since July 13 and tossed at least 50 pitches in all three long-relief outings, but his 5.54 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB over 13 innings during that span aren't exactly encouraging. It's unclear what the team's plans are for the fifth starter spot, but if Eder stays on schedule his next appearance will come at home early next week against the Rangers.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Wednesday that Varsho (hamstring) will move his rehab assignment up to Triple-A Buffalo by Friday and is expected to remain with the affiliate through the weekend, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

If all goes well for Varsho during his time with Buffalo, he should be cleared to return from the 10-day injured list during the Blue Jays' series in Baltimore that begins Monday. Varsho has played in four rehab games so far, slugging home runs in his last two contests with Single-A Dunedin. He's been sidelined since early June with a strained left hamstring.

Grisham will start in center field and bat leadoff in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

Grisham has produced a .949 OPS so far this month, and manager Aaron Boone will reward him by including him in the lineup as the leadoff man for a third consecutive matchup with a right-handed pitcher (Chris Bassitt). The outfielder had seemingly moved into more of a part-time role against righties in recent weeks, but Grisham could see more opportunities while Jasson Dominguez -- who has gone 0-for-16 with six strikeouts in his last four games -- continues to slump.

Stanton is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

Stanton will get some rest for the series finale after he started in each of the Yankees' last four games while going 5-for-15 with a solo home run, three walks and four runs. With Stanton on the bench, Aaron Judge will get a day off from playing the outfield and will occupy the designated-hitter spot.

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

For the second day in a row, the right-handed-hitting Goldschmidt will give way to the left-handed-hitting Ben Rice at first base and head to the bench while the Blue Jays send another righty (Chris Bassitt) to the bump. Though the Yankees won't completely close the door on having Goldschmidt play versus righties, he may have to settle for more of a part-time role in those matchups since he's produced a weak .246/.290/.333 (75 wRC+) over 271 plate appearances against them so far this season.

Melton (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, surrendering six runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings as the Tigers were downed 6-1 by the Pirates. He struck out seven.

Called up earlier in the day to make his MLB debut, Melton flashed some of the strikeout stuff that earned him a promotion, but the 24-year-old right-hander also served up two homers, including a second-inning grand slam by Spencer Horwitz. Detroit's rotation plans are a bit chaotic right now, as the Tigers don't get a day off until July 31 while Tarik Skubal (personal) is currently away from the team for the birth of his child, so it's not clear if Melton will get a further audition after this performance.

Wells is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

Wells will get a breather for the series finale after he started behind the dish Monday and Tuesday. J.C. Escarra will form a battery Wednesday with starting pitcher Max Fried.

Eovaldi (back) will start for the Rangers on Friday against Atlanta, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Eovaldi had to be scratched from his last scheduled outing this past weekend due to back tightness, but he's bounced back since then and has been cleared to rejoin the rotation. The veteran right-hander will be pitching on 11 days rest, as his last start came in the final game before the All-Star break July 13 in Houston
