  • Astros' Lance McCullers: Reinstated ahead of start

The Astros activated McCullers (finger) from the 15-day injured list Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

McCullers is set to rejoin the rotation Friday in Baltimore after missing more than a month of action with a blister on his pitching hand. The veteran right-hander threw 80 pitches and went five innings in his lone rehab start, so he shouldn't have much of a workload restriction Friday.

  • Logan VanWey RP | HOU

Astros' Logan VanWey: Returned to Sugar Land

The Astros optioned VanWey to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

VanWey will cede his spot on the 26-man roster to Lance McCullers (finger), who is coming off the injured list to start Friday's game. The 26-year-old logged a 5.59 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 9.2 innings with the Astros. He has a 4.34 ERA in 18.2 innings with Sugar Land in 2025.

  • Bennett Sousa RP | HOU

Astros' Bennett Sousa: Down with elbow inflammation

The Astros placed Sousa on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

It's not clear when Sousa's elbow began barking, but his last appearance came Tuesday in Detroit. He'll be eligible to return Sept. 4, but it's possible he'll need more time, given the nature of the injury. It's a blow to the Astros' bullpen, as Sousa holds a 2.84 ERA and 59:15 K:BB over 50.2 innings this season.

  • Alex Lange RP | KC

Tigers' Alex Lange: Sent to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Lange to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

The right-hander was reinstated from the 60-day IL this week and delivered a scoreless frame in his first MLB appearance since May of 2024, but he won't retain his spot in Detroit's bullpen. Drew Sommers was called up Friday to fill Lange's place on the roster.

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Batting fifth in MLB debut

Garcia is starting in center field and batting fifth Friday against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

The 22-year-old is receiving his first look in the majors and will make his debut in center field Friday versus New York lefty Max Fried. Garcia is one of Boston's top prospects and has a .303/.367/.564 slash line with 17 homers and two steals in 66 games at Triple-A Worcester this year.

  • Joe Boyle SP | TB

Rays' Joe Boyle: Will be optioned back to minors

Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Friday that Boyle will be optioned to Triple-A Durham, Tom Krasniqi of 95.3 WDAE reports.

Boyle surrendered six runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks over four innings in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals and has been tagged for 16 runs (15 earned) over his last three starts. The right-hander has dominated at Durham this season (1.73 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 96:31 K:BB in 73 innings) and shown flashes at the major-league level, but Boyle is still looking for more consistency.

  • Dan Altavilla RP | MIN

White Sox's Dan Altavilla: Starting rehab assignment

Altavilla (lat) was sent to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday to begin a rehab assignment, Jack Ankony of SI.com reports.

Altavilla has been on the shelf since Aug. 2 with a right lat strain, but he's been cleared to begin a minor-league rehab stint. The 32-year-old reliever has a 2.36 ERA in 26.2 innings with the White Sox in 2025.

  • Red Sox's Carlos Narvaez: On bench Friday

Narvaez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Yankees.

Narvaez will yield to Connor Wong behind the plate Friday after starting in three of the Red Sox's previous four games. Narvaez is working through a 3-for-29 (.103) slump at the dish.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Out of lineup again Friday

Guerrero (hamstring) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game in Miami.

Guerrero hasn't played since injuring his left hamstring during Monday's contest in Pittsburgh. He's been diagnosed with inflammation rather than a strain, so Guerrero could be back in the lineup any day. In the meantime, Ty France will draw another start at first base Friday.
