  • Anthony Volpe SS | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Dropped to seven spot

Volpe is batting seventh and starting at shortstop Friday in the Yankees' game versus the Rays.

It's Volpe's first start since April 15 in which he isn't hitting out of the leadoff spot. The rookie is just 2-for-27 over his last six games. With the Yankees' offense slumping, manager Aaron Boone has opted to change things up. Gleyber Torres is up at the top of the order Friday.

  • Pablo Reyes RF | SD

Red Sox's Pablo Reyes: Acquired by Boston

The Red Sox acquired Reyes from the Athletics on Friday in exchange for cash considerations.

The 29-year-old has slashed .257/.385/.351 with one home run and three stolen bases at the Triple-A level this season. Reyes is capable of playing all over the diamond and will give the Red Sox some utility depth at Triple-A Worcester.

  • Aledmys Diaz 1B | HOU

Athletics' Aledmys Diaz: Making encouraging progress

Diaz (hamstring) ran before Thursday's game against the Rangers and has a chance to come off the injured list Sunday, the Associated Press reports.

The team's official site adds that manager Mark Kotsay noted Diaz has actually been able to run for the last few days without any issues. The veteran isn't expected to require a rehab assignment due to the brevity of his absence, so a return when first eligible Sunday remains very much in play.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Notches two more thefts

Witt went 0-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases Thursday in a 4-3 victory against the White Sox.

Witt went hitless for the second straight game, but he made the most of his first-inning walk by proceeding to swipe both second and third base. The speedster is up to 12 thefts on 14 attempts this season, tying him for fifth in steals in the majors. Witt has been particularly active on the basepaths this month, swiping five bags through nine contests.

  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Finishes triple shy of cycle

Schmitt went 4-for-4 with one double, one homer, three RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 6-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Schmitt was just getting started when he hammered a second-inning curveball 443 feet. He capped his night with a ninth-inning double to push the lead to 3-0. The rookie has torn up major-league pitching in his first three games. He has collected at least two hits in every game and is sporting a 2.000 OPS. Brandon Crawford is expected to return soon, but Schmitt can play all over the infield, increasing his odds of sticking around.

  • Carlos Correa SS | HOU

Twins' Carlos Correa: Hits key double amid slow start

Correa went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Thursday's 5-3 victory over the Padres.

Correa has had a slow start to the season, as he's hitting just .191 with a .646 OPS. He came through with a key double late in the game to give the Twins the lead, so perhaps it's a sign he's set to break out of his slump. He's drawing walks (10.6 BB%) and striking out (21 K%) at similar rates to his career averages, so he may be just a bit unlucky so far with a .204 BABIP.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Hopes to play Friday

Franco (neck) hopes to play Friday against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Franco exited Thursday's game in the fifth inning but spoke to reporters after the game and said he was feeling better. Both he and manager Kevin Cash said it's possible that he will be able to return to the lineup Friday.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Nabs 12th steal

Franco went 2-for-3 with one steal in Thursday's 8-2 win over the Yankees before leaving the game with neck spasms.

Franco started off strong with both hits and a steal in the first three innings. However, no one was on base and no one drove Franco home. The shortstop is having a career year with 12 stolen bases and seven homers. Ronald Acuna is the only other player with those numbers in 2023, though we'll have to see if Franco can shake off the injury to get back at it during the big series against the Yankees.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Dealing with neck spasms

Franco exited Thursday's game against the Yankees with neck spasms and tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Franco was removed in the fifth inning after appearing uncomfortable during an at-bat. He'll be re-evaluated Friday, but there's no further detail for the time being. If Franco is forced to miss additional time, Taylor Walls is likely to step in at shortstop for Tampa Bay.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Exits Thursday's game

Franco was removed from Thursday's game against the Yankees with an apparent neck injury, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Franco exited in the fifth inning after appearing uncomfortable during an at-bat. There are no further details regarding the issue or the potential severity. Isaac Paredes entered the game in Franco's place to play third base, while Taylor Walls shifted to shortstop.
