Chris Owings SS | LAD
Diamondbacks' Chris Owings: Continues hot start with three-hit game
Owings went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in a 5-2 win over the Cardinals on Thursday.
Owings has been in a nice little groove to start off the season, with the three-hit game leaving him with a .429/.500/.667 slash line through 21 at-bats. That's obviously not sustainable for a whole year, but Owings was providing some sneaky value last season before he went down with an injury -- at 26 years old, it's not all that far-fetched to think he could improve on the .741 OPS he put up over 362 at-bats in 2017.

Javier Baez SS | DET
Cubs' Javier Baez: Walks three times, drives in two Thursday
Baez went 1-for-1 with three walks, two runs scored and two RBI in Thursday's win over the Brewers.
Baez had been scuffling a bit out of the gates, going just 2-for-18 over the Cubs' first five games, but he put together some great plate appearances Thursday. The three walks are particularly encouraging considering Baez walked just once over the first five games.

Nick Ahmed SS | TEX
Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed: Held out Thursday
Ahmed (illness) is not in the lineup for Thursday's matchup with the Cardinals.
This marks the third day in a row Ahmed will be sidelined due to being sick. Ketel Marte and Chris Owings will cover the middle infield in his stead. Look for Ahmed to try to get back in the lineup for Saturday's contest.

Trea Turner SS | PHI
Nationals' Trea Turner: Ejected after three-strikeout day
Turner was ejected in the bottom of the sixth inning of Thursday's game against the Mets for arguing balls and strikes. He finished the day hitless in three at-bats.
Batting out of the sixth spot for the fourth time in seven games this season, Turner struck out in all three of his plate appearances, marking the ninth time in his career he's achieved that dubious distinction. While Turner's low placement in the batting order has been a source of frustration for fantasy owners, the shortstop has more or less met expectations thus far with a .375 on-base percentage, one home run and three stolen bases. Moreover, Turner's outlook could improve in the games to come after Adam Eaton exited early Thursday following an awkward slide into home plate. If Eaton is forced to miss time, Turner would be the top choice to fill in at the top of the lineup.

Chris Owings SS | LAD
Diamondbacks' Chris Owings: Doubles, steals base in series finale
Owings went 1-for-3 with a double, stolen base and a run in Wednesday's 3-0 victory over the Dodgers.
With the Dodgers bringing three consecutive lefties to the hill, Owings was a fixture in the lineup throughout the series, going 3-for-13 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Look for manager Torey Lovullo to clear a spot for Owings whenever the Diamondbacks oppose a southpaw, but the utility man also has a clearer path to playing time versus right-handers than he did heading into the season after third baseman Jake Lamb (shoulder) joined outfielder Steven Souza (pectoral) on the disabled list earlier this week.

Brandon Crawford SS | STL
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Slugs first homer of season Wednesday
Crawford went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 10-1 win over the Mariners.
After collecting only three singles through his first five games of 2018, Crawford was able to assemble a more impressive line in the box score Wednesday. The veteran shortstop hasn't been able to duplicate his 21-HR performance from 2015 over the last two seasons, and until he shows signs of regaining that lost thunder he'll remain a low-end fantasy option at shortstop in most formats.

Orlando Arcia SS | MIN
Brewers' Orlando Arcia: Not in Wednesday's lineup
Arcia is out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against St. Louis.
Arcia will retreat to the bench in favor of Eric Sogard after starting the past two games at shortstop. Expect to see Arcia back in the lineup for Thursday's series opener against the Cubs.

Justin Lopez SS | SD
Padres' Justin Lopez: Youngest player in Midwest League
Lopez will open the year with Low-A Fort Wayne as the youngest player in the Midwest League, Bill Center of MLB.com reports.
Lopez, who turns 18 in May, earned this aggressive assignment with his glove -- many evaluators think he's among the best defensive shortstops in the minors. Obviously if Lopez projected to be an impact hitter, he would be a valued commodity in dynasty leagues, but he only hit .246/.291/.324 with an 80:17 K:BB in 303 plate appearances last year in the Northwest League. If he can make any progress as a hitter, Lopez will be worth rostering in deeper dynasty leagues.

Brandon Crawford SS | STL
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Slow start to season
Crawford went 0-for-2 before being removed as part of a double-switch in Tuesday's loss to the Mariners.
There was no injury to report here, as manager Bruce Bochy simply wanted to get one of his regulars out of a game that the Giants were trailing 6-1. Crawford's bat hasn't made the trip from spring training yet, batting just .188 (3-for-17) with no extra-base hits or counting stats through the club's first five contests. The 31-year-old has been a premier source of RBI as a shortstop over the past few seasons, and he has been batting either fifth or sixth this season, so fantasy owners should remain patient with the slugging shortstop.

Nick Ahmed SS | TEX
Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed: Dealing with illness
Ahmed was sick Tuesday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.
The illness explains why Ahmed is out of the lineup for two games in a row. The Diamondbacks will want to get him back in action soon, as they're already down one infielder with Jake Lamb on the disabled list with a shoulder strain.
