Michael Lorenzen RP | TOR
Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Works around wildness
Lorenzen (4-6) scattered two hits and five walks while striking out seven over 6.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday versus the Mariners.
Two of Lorenzen's four scoreless appearances this year have come in his last two outings -- he's pitched 11.2 consecutive shutout innings in July. The right-hander is up to seven quality starts with a 3.75 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 73:25 K:BB through 93.2 innings on the season. Lorenzen is projected for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.

George Kirby SP | SEA
Mariners' George Kirby: Struggles Saturday
Kirby (8-8) allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Tigers.
Kirby strung together five straight quality starts heading into the All-Star break, but he didn't fare well in his first outing of the second half. The right-hander gave up four of the runs on a pair of homers from Kerry Carpenter, making this just the second time in 18 appearances Kirby's allowed multiple long balls. He has a 3.43 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 93:11 K:BB through 112.2 innings. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Twins.

Jake Irvin SP | WAS
Nationals' Jake Irvin: Goes three frames against St. Louis
Irvin did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over three innings against the Cardinals. He struck out three.
Irvin struggled to get through the Cardinals' lineup, getting pulled after tossing 79 pitches in three innings of work. All of the damage came in the second frame, during which Irvin allowed a solo home run to Alec Burleson and a triple to Brendan Donovan. Though Irvin owns a 4.96 ERA on the year, Saturday's start marked his first outing allowing more than three earned runs since May 30. However, he's pitched six innings only twice in that stretch.

Steven Matz RP | TB
Cardinals' Steven Matz: Struggles in start
Matz did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against Washington. He struck out four.
After tossing a gem in his return to the starting rotation last time out, Matz retired his first seven batters Saturday. However, the start went downhill fast, as Matz served up a pair of solo homers in the third to Alex Call and CJ Abrams. Through 12 starts (60 innings), Matz is 0-6 with a 5.40 ERA and a 58:23 K:BB, though he's been much improved since moving to the pen. Considering his struggles as a starter, it's unclear if Matz will stick in the rotation. However, he may be forced into at least one more start with Adam Wainwright (shoulder) shelved.

Andrew Abbott SP | CIN
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Bounces back but takes loss
Abbott (4-2) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings against Milwaukee. He struck out three.
Abbott was exceptional outside of a pair of leadoff home runs allowed to Christian Yelich in the first and William Contreras in the fourth. Though he took the loss, Abbott picked up his sixth quality start of the campaign and offered a strong bounce-back from his last start, when he gave up six runs against the Brewers on July 7. Through eight starts (47.2 innings), Abbott owns a 2.45 ERA and 51:16 K:BB with a 1.5 HR/9. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come against the Giants at Great American Ball Park.

Connor Seabold RP | KC
Rockies' Connor Seabold: Struggles again Saturday
Seabold (1-7) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over 2.1 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Yankees.
Seabold has completely fallen apart with 30 runs allowed over his last 19 innings. All of them have been earned, and yielding 10 home runs in that span certainly isn't helping his cause, though half of those long balls have come in his two road starts in that span. Seabold now has a 7.18 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 54:24 K:BB through 72.2 innings on the year. Despite the crooked numbers, the Rockies are currently lacking in pitching depth, so he can be tentatively projected to make a road start in Miami next week.
-
Freddy Peralta SP | TB
Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Blanks Cincinnati
Peralta (6-7) earned the win Saturday, allowing one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings against the Reds. He struck out six.
Peralta fired off six scoreless innings Saturday, marking his first scoreless outing since April 3, and set a season low in hits allowed. Though the 27-year-old has struggled this season with a 4.41 ERA, Peralta has maintained his strikeout arsenal, owning a 10.38 K/9 through 98 innings (18 appearances). Peralta will look to continue his post-All-Star break success in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against Atlanta at American Family Field next week.

Clarke Schmidt RP | NYY
Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Collects fifth win
Schmidt (5-6) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rockies.
Schmidt has won his last three starts, and Saturday's sharp effort gave him his first quality start since June 6. The eight strikeouts also matched his season high. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last 11 appearances, providing steady pitching after a rough start to the season. Schmidt has a 4.31 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 95:27 K:BB through 94 innings this year. He's projected for a favorable home matchup against the Royals next week.

Framber Valdez SP | DET
Astros' Framber Valdez: Leaves outing with apparent injury
Valdez was removed from Saturday's start versus the Angels in the seventh inning with an apparent injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Valdez had just served up a two-run home run to Zach Neto and was removed in the middle of the at-bat against the next hitter. It's worth noting that he had already thrown 103 pitches, so perhaps the left-hander's removal was just precautionary. Valdez has dealt with an ankle injury recently, although there's no indication whether that's what was bothering him Saturday. The southpaw struck out 13 batters and induced 23 whiffs against the Halos, though he was charged with five earned runs across 6.1 frames.

Pablo Lopez SP | MIN
Twins' Pablo Lopez: Roughed up by Athletics
Lopez did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against Oakland. He struck out seven.
After logging a complete game shutout in his last start, Lopez turned in his worst outing of 2023. He set a season high in runs allowed while also tying his season high in the hits column. In six starts leading up to the All-Star break, Lopez posted a 2.72 ERA and 52:9 K:BB over 39.2 innings, and he will look to reclaim that form in his next start, which is expected to come during a four-game road series against the Mariners next week.
