May was removed from Wednesday's game against the Mets after getting hit on the back by a comebacker, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

May's first pitch of the game came right back at him at 106 mph, striking him in the back. He managed to throw a few warm-up pitches afterward, but the Brewers' training staff ultimately made the call to take the 28-year-old out of the game. Because he threw just one pitch Wednesday, he could return to the mound to make his next start within the next few days, but the Brewers will first need to confirm he didn't suffer a severe injury.

Vasquez (10-6) earned the win Wednesday over the Pirates, allowing just one hit and two walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out two.

Vasquez was limited to just 68 pitches Wednesday, but he still managed to earn the win with another strong outing -- the righty has earned wins in four of his last five appearances while posting a 2.29 ERA over his last 35.1 frames. Vasquez's ERA is down to 4.02 this season with a 1.28 WHIP and 76:34 K:BB across 123 innings. He's currently in line to face the Reds on the road his next time out.

Padres manager Craig Stammen said Wednesday that Mize (ankle) felt good after his bullpen session and will start Friday against the Rays, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Mize injured his right ankle during his previous start Saturday against the Twins. X-rays came back negative for the 29-year-old right-hander, and after making it through his bullpen session no worse for the wear, he'll return to the bump Friday on five days' rest. In four starts for the Padres since being acquired from the Tigers on Aug. 3, Mize has a 7.00 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 18 innings.

Luzardo (12-5) earned the win Wednesday over Seattle, giving up just one hit and three walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine.

It was another stellar effort from Luzardo, who's posted a 1.90 ERA across 90 frames in his last 14 starts. The southpaw's ERA is down to 3.09 across 27 starts (163 innings) this season with a 1.12 WHIP and 203 strikeouts, good for the fourth most in the majors. Luzardo currently lines up to face the Diamondbacks on the road in his next outing.

Rodriguez (14-4) picked up the win in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over the Cubs, scattering two hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine.

The nine Ks tied Rodriguez's season high, a mark he set Aug. 9, when he began his current four-start win streak. The veteran lefty's 14 wins on the season have him tied for second in the NL behind Cristopher Sanchez's 16 for the Phillies, and since the All-Star break Rodriguez has gone 6-1 in eight outings with a 3.00 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB over 48 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home early next week against Philadelphia.

The Diamondbacks will recall Cabrera from Triple-A Reno to start Thursday's game against the Giants in San Francisco, Alex D'Agostino of SI.com reports.

The 24-year-old will fill the opening in the rotation that was created by Michael Soroka's (shoulder) recent move to the injured list. Cabrera has made four starts for Arizona this season, giving up 11 earned runs across 17.2 innings. Since making his last appearance in the majors July 8, Cabrera has posted a 6.83 ERA and 1.66 WHIP across 29 frames at Triple-A.

Boyd (8-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings as the Cubs were downed 2-0 by the Diamondbacks. He struck out five.

The veteran southpaw delivered his seventh quality start of the season on 94 pitches (58 strikes), but Chicago's hitters couldn't solve Eduardo Rodriguez or the Arizona bullpen. Boyd's lone mistake resulted in a sixth-inning solo shot by Jordan Lawlar, and keeping the ball in the yard has been an issue for him in August. Over five starts and 31 innings this month. Boyd has been taken deep nine times, leaving him with a 5.23 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 16:11 K:BB. He'll look for more run support in his next outing, which is set to come at home early next week against the Brewers.

Cortes was placed on the 7-day injured list at Single-A Clearwater on Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic reports.

Cortes has yet to pitch in a game since signing with the Phillies on a major-league contract last Wednesday, and he'll now have to wait a bit longer to make his organizational debut. It's unknown whether his latest trip to the injured list is related to the biceps injury that required him to undergo surgery in October.

The Giants transferred Whisenhunt (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

His move to the 60-day injured list frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Braxton Roxby, who was called up from Triple-A Sacramento to provide a fresh arm for the Giants' injury-depleted pitching staff. Whisenhunt is set to miss the rest of the season after recently sustaining a torn UCL in his left elbow, but a decision has yet to be made on what type of surgery he'll require to address the injury, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Whisenhunt will receive a second opinion before going under the knife, but regardless of whether he requires a traditional Tommy John surgery, an internal brace procedure or a hybrid of the two, he'll likely miss the entire 2027 season.

The Giants placed Houser on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to a right forearm strain.

Houser will likely be sent in for an MRI before the Giants have a better sense of a timeline for his return, but he's a good bet to spend more than the minimum 15 days on the shelf and could be at risk of missing the rest of the season. The right-hander sustained the injury in his start against the Reds on Tuesday, when he was lifted midway through the second inning after feeling tightness in his arm. Houser had been pitching exceptionally well since the All-Star break, logging a 1.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB in 29.2 innings between two starts and six relief appearances. The loss of Houser creates another hole in a patchwork Giants rotation that has been thinned out over the past few weeks after Tyler Mahle and Robbie Ray were moved at the trade deadline and after Trevor McDonald (elbow) and Carson Whisenhunt (elbow) both recently suffered season-ending injuries.
