  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

Cardinals' Austin Gomber: Sticking in rotation Wednesday

Gomber is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

After tossing five scoreless innings his last time out against the Royals on Aug. 10 to move to 2-0 on the season, Gomber will garner a third consecutive start for the Cardinals. With the Cardinals recently indicating that injured starter Carlos Martinez (shoulder) will likely shift to the bullpen for the rest of the season once he's activated from the 10-day disabled list, Gomber's hold on a rotation spot should be fairly secure so long as he performs capably.

  • Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Listed as Friday's starter

The Brewers are listing Peralta as their probable starter for Friday's game against the Cardinals.

Due to a pair of off days this week, Milwaukee would have had the luxury of going with a four-man rotation on a temporary basis, which likely would have resulted in Peralta shifting to the bullpen. It appears manager Craig Counsell has instead elected to keep each rotation member on his normal turn, though Peralta will benefit from pitching on six days' rest thanks to the two open dates in the schedule. The rookie remains a prolific source of strikeouts with an 11.8 K/9 over 11 outings this season, but he's shown some shaky control and command of late with 15 walks and 16 hits allowed across his last four starts.

  • Kenta Maeda SP | NYY

Dodgers' Kenta Maeda: Falters in ninth inning

Maeda was charged with a loss after giving up a run on three hits while striking out one over an inning against the Giants on Tuesday.

Scott Alexander had faltered recently in crucial late-inning situations, so manager Dave Roberts turned to Maeda in the ninth inning of a tie game at home, a scenario that is usually reserved for a team's closer. The move doesn't confirm that the converted starter will close out games going forward, especially considering he was unable to get the job done. That said, it does show Roberts' willingness to use Maeda in late-inning situations while Kenley Jansen (chest) is on the disabled list.

  • Brett Kennedy RP | CIN

Padres' Brett Kennedy: Allows five in loss

Kennedy (0-2) took the loss Tuesday, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings against the Angels.

Kennedy allowed four extra-base hits in the outing -- a home run, a triple and two doubles -- and he didn't appear to be fooling hitters as he induced just three swings and misses. The 24-year-old was a perfect 10-0 with Triple-A El Paso, but he's now yielded 11 runs on 20 hits with just five strikeouts in nine innings in his first two big-league starts -- both losses. If he's given another turn through the rotation, Kennedy will take on the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Dodgers' Alex Wood: Fires five strong innings in no-decision

Wood allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Giants. He did not factor into the decision.

Wood ended up missing just the minimum 10 days after landing on the disabled list following his last start, and he showed no signs of any lingering issue with his hamstring Tuesday. The lefty has allowed one earned run or fewer in three straight starts and is working to an impressive 2.43 ERA in his last 10 starts. On the year, the 27-year-old has a 3.51 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 113:31 K:BB across 128.1 innings. Next on tap is a home start Monday against the Cardinals.

  • Rockies' German Marquez: Earns 10th win of year

Marquez (10-9) struck out seven and walked two in a win over the Astros on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits in seven innings.

Marquez threw his fourth consecutive quality start and his 12th overall on the year. Marquez was sporting a 5.53 ERA on June 24 and has gone 5-1 with a 2.90 ERA over his last eight starts, bringing his season ERA down to 4.51. The young righty has a 146:47 K:BB in 135.2 innings this year, and will look to keep things going in his next start against the Braves in Atlanta.

  • Pirates' Jameson Taillon: Falls to Twins

Taillon (9-9) gave up three earned runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings Tuesday. He struck out four batters in a 5-2 loss to Minnesota.

The righty was cruising with a perfect game through three innings before the wheels fell off. The Twins strung together five hits and three runs in a fourth inning in which eight batters came to the plate. Despite the mediocre outing, he gave his team a chance to win, compiling his seventh straight quality start. Taillon showed no ill effects from pitching a complete game in the high altitude of Colorado, throwing 91 pitches (61 for strikes).

  • Patrick Corbin SP | TOR

Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin: Strikes out seven in win over Rangers

Corbin (10-4) allowed three runs on six hits with no walks across seven innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Rangers. He struck out seven.

Corbin allowed just one baserunner through the first three innings and gave up his first run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. He was touched up for two more tallies on three hits in the sixth, but he escaped the jam and completed another frame before calling it a night. It was the third consecutive quality start for the left-hander, who's now recorded at least seven strikeouts in five straight outings. He owns a solid 3.18 ERA to go along with a 1.03 WHIP and a 11.0 K/9 this season, making him one of the more pleasant surprises among MLB starting pitchers.

  • Cardinals' Michael Wacha: Ramping up physical activity

Wacha (oblique) has been taking light swings and participating in fielding drills in recent days, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

The recovering right-hander also threw a successful bullpen last Sunday and is slated for another session either Wednesday or Thursday. Wacha will be evaluated for a possible minor-league rehab assignment thereafter, one that will be comprised of multiple appearances in order to allow him to build the strength in his arm back up. With that in mind, it seems unlikely that he'll be reinstated from the 10-day disabled list until late August or early September.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Serves up three homers

Quintana (10-9) took the loss against the Brewers on Tuesday, allowing five runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Quintana served up a pair of two-run home runs to Ryan Braun and also gave up a leadoff homer to Lorenzo Cain. The 29-year-old has allowed five runs or more in three of his last four starts and now has a 4.46 ERA and 1.38 WHIP this season. He is next expected to start Sunday at Pittsburgh.
