Kenta Maeda SP | NYY
Dodgers' Kenta Maeda: Strikes out nine in no-decision
Maeda did not factor into the decision against Toronto on Thursday, hurling six innings and giving up two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out nine.
Maeda limited the Blue Jays to one extra-base hit -- a sixth-inning home run by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. -- while whiffing nine for his second straight start. He effectively controlled the zone and kept Toronto hitters guessing, tossing strikes on 57 of 85 pitches and inducing 19 swinging strikes. Maeda now owns a 4.13 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 146:44 K:BB in 133 innings this season and will next head south to face the Padres on Wednesday.

Carlos Martinez SP | SF
Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Records 15th save
Martinez allowed two walks and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Rockies.
Martinez was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning. While he struck out the first batter he faced, he made things interesting by surrendering free passes to the next two batters he faced before ultimately closing the door. It was a bounceback effort for Martinez, as he had allowed two earned runs on three hits in his previous outing -- though he still escaped with a save in that instance as well. For the season, he's managed a 3.74 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 35 punchouts and 15 saves across 33.2 innings.

Miles Mikolas RP | WAS
Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Hit hard by Rockies
Mikolas allowed five earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out five across six innings Thursday against the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision.
Mikolas pitched cleanly the majority of the game but was sidetracked by two big rallies. The trouble began in the second inning when he allowed the first three batters of the frame to reach base on singles, resulting in two earned runs. Three innings later, he surrendered a three-run homer to Nolan Arenado. This marked Mikolas' third consecutive start allowing five earned runs, during which he's allowed five homers. That's inflated his ERA to 4.43, despite a respectable a respectable 1.25 WHIP. Mikolas will look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for Tuesday at Milwaukee.

Noah Syndergaard SP | CLE
Mets' Noah Syndergaard: Six shutout innings
Syndergaard (2-0) allowed two hits and no walks while striking out five across six shutout innings to earn the win Thursday against the Indians.
Syndergaard would have likely worked even deeper into the game, but a lengthy rain delay ended his night after just 73 pitches. He retired the first 16 hitters he faced, with his no-hitter broken up by two singles in the sixth frame. Syndergaard has been on quite a run since the All-Star break, working at least seven innings in six of eight starts and allowing just 11 earned runs across 54.1 innings. He'll look to keep things working in his next outing, currently scheduled at home Wednesday against the Cubs.
-
German Marquez SP | SD
Rockies' German Marquez: Surrenders four earned runs
Marquez allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings Thursday against the Cardinals. He did not factor into the decision.
Marquez began the game with three shutout innings but had his start derailed by two two-run home runs. Despite three of his past four starts coming on the road, Marquez has now allowed multiple home runs in three of his past four starts. That's continued a season-long issue, as Marquez is now surrendering 1.5 HR/9 -- a mark exacerbated by his home park. For the season, he now owns a 4.76 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 175 punchouts across 174 innings. He'll look to keep the ball in the yard in his next start, currently scheduled at home Tuesday against Boston.

Sandy Alcantara SP | MIA
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Whiffs seven
Alcantara allowed one run (none earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out seven across seven innings Thursday against the Braves. He did not factor into the decision.
Alcantara limited the Braves' lineup, holding them without an extra-base hit. The effort extended his streak of working at least seven innings to three starts, during which he's allowed only five earned runs across 21.2 frames. While he hasn't earned a win since June 21, Alcantara has rebounded from a rocky five-start stretch spanning parts of June and July to lower his ERA to 4.15 and WHIP to 1.38 across 149.2 innings for the season. He'll look to keep his strong run going in his next start, currently scheduled for Tuesday against Cincinnati.

Rich Hill SP | KC
Dodgers' Rich Hill: Pitches off mound
Hill (forearm) tossed "a handful of pitches" off the mound Thursday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Though the session was apparently short, it was significant as it was the first time Hill has thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list with a flexor tendon strain June 20. The 39-year-old will throw a longer bullpen session of approximately 25 pitches Saturday. He could rejoin the Dodgers during the first or second week of September and is still being considered for a spot in the rotation if he has built the necessary stamina by October.

Mike Soroka SP | ARI
Braves' Mike Soroka: Seven strong innings
Soroka allowed two earned runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five across seven innings Thursday against the Marlins. He did not factor into the decision.
Soroka held the Marlins scoreless through six innings, prior to allowing a two-run double to Starlin Castro in his final frame. His dominance was highlighted from the second to sixth innings, when he retired 13 consecutive batters. He achieved those results by effectively keeping the Marlins from hitting the ball in the air, recording 17 of his 21 outs from either a groundball or strikeout. Soroka has now turned in five consecutive quality starts, working no fewer than 6.2 innings in an outing in that span. That stretch has aided his already strong ratios, as he now has a 2.41 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 112 strikeouts across 141.2 innings for the season. He'll look to keep things going in his next appearance, currently scheduled for Tuesday at Toronto.
-
Kyle Hendricks SP | LAA
Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Shuts down Giants
Hendricks (9-9) pitched seven scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the Giants. He allowed three hits and no walks, while striking out seven.
The Cubs only mustered one run, but Hendricks made it count. The righty posted his second straight strong start, as he allowed just a single run over seven innings his last time out against Pittsburgh. The good stretch has bumped his season ERA down to 3.20, and Hendricks will look to keep it going Wednesday on the road against the Mets.

Tyler Mahle SP | ATL
Reds' Tyler Mahle: Returns from IL
Mahle (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.
Mahle landed on the IL on July 22 due to a left hamstring strain, though he finished his rehab with Triple-A and will remain with the Bats after being activated. He owns a 4.93 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 106:26 K:BB over 102.1 innings this season in the big leagues and figures to resurface in the majors once rosters expand in September.
