  • Corbin Burnes SP | ARI

Brewers' Corbin Burnes: Returning to rotation

Burnes will return to starting rotation Tuesday against the Twins, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Three of Burnes' four appearances this season have come out of the bullpen, though he's gotten at least 10 outs in all four of his outings. The young righty is putting his 2019 struggles firmly in the rearview mirror, posting a 3.38 ERA through his first 16 innings while striking out an impressive 36.4 percent of opposing batters, though his 16.7 percent walk rate is worryingly high.

  • Brewers' Adrian Houser: Overcomes early struggles

Houser allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five across five innings Saturday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision.

Houser allowed two of his three earned runs in the first inning, initially giving up a solo home run to Anthony Rizzo before surrendering an RBI double to Ian Happ. However, after allowing a final run in the second frame, he settled in to retire the final eight batters he faced. Houser, who has a solid 3.27 ERA with 18 strikeouts across 22 innings this season, will draw his next start in a tough matchup at Minnesota on Thursday.

  • Colin Rea SP | CHC

Cubs' Colin Rea: Surrenders three earned runs

Rea allowed three earned runs on four hits across 3.1 innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Saturday. He did not walk or strike out any batters.

Rea ran into little trouble through three innings, allowing only one baserunner in that span. However, after retiring the leadoff hitter in the fourth frame, he surrendered two singles and a double. The Cubs have a pair of doubleheaders in the upcoming week, which should give Rea another turn through the rotation Wednesday against the Cardinals.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Braves' Max Fried: Sharp in no-decision

Fried didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Marlins. He struck out seven and allowed four hits and three walks over 6.1 scoreless innings.

The lefty dazzled once again, throwing 67 of 103 pitches for strikes, and Fried was in line for his fourth win of the year before Will Smith blew the lead in the eighth inning. Fried now has an NL-leading 1.24 ERA to go along with a 28:9 K:BB through 29 innings, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next outing Friday, at home against the Phillies.

  • Aaron Nola SP | PHI

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Blanks Mets for second win

Nola (2-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 6-2 victory over the Mets, allowing three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

The right-hander got into a bit of trouble early, putting Mets on second and third with two outs in the first inning, but Nola then struck out Pete Alonso and didn't allow another runner past second base the rest of the way. He retired the final 13 batters he faced and finished his night having thrown 66 of 102 pitches for strikes. Nola will take a sparkling 2.05 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 37:4 K:BB through 26.1 innings into his next outing Friday in Atlanta.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Falls to Phillies

Matz (0-4) took the loss Saturday as the Mets were downed 6-2 by the Phillies, coughing up six runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.

The southpaw held his own through four innings, but the Phillies broke it open the third time through the order with five runs in the fifth. There was very little that could be taken from Matz's final line that might be called encouraging, as he got tagged for another homer -- already the ninth he's served up -- and doubled the number of walks he's issued on the year for good measure. He'll carry a 23:6 K:BB and a ghastly 9.00 ERA through 23 innings into his next outing Thursday in Miami.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Plays catch Saturday

DeGrom (neck) played catch from about 90 feet Saturday afternoon, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

DeGrom is just going through the proper steps with the hopes that he'll be ready to go for his next turn through the rotation, currently scheduled for Wednesday against the Marlins. The 2019 NL Cy Young winner is expected to throw a bullpen session Sunday if his neck is loose enough.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Earns win in return to action

Wainwright (2-0) picked up the win in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox, allowing one run on two hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked three.

The Cardinals' COVID-19 outbreak meant that it had been exactly three weeks since Wainwright's last competitive pitch, but the veteran righty showed no signs of rust. He threw just 67 pitches, though that could have been a matter of game flow rather than a lack of stamina, as the seven-inning game meant the Cardinals could turn to high-leverage relievers as early as the sixth inning. The 38-year-old now owns a 1.64 ERA through his first two starts of the year, though his 8:4 K:BB in 11 innings doesn't support that number particularly well.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Starting Game 2

Woodford is starting Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Woodford will make his major-league debut in the second game of Saturday's twin bill as the Cardinals plan to utilize a bullpen game. The right-hander made 26 starts with Triple-A Memphis last season, posting a 4.15 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 151.2 innings.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Another sim game on tap

Quintana (thumb) is scheduled to throw a four-inning simulated game Sunday, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Quintana played catch prior to Saturday's game against the Brewers, and he'll continue to build his strength back up with a four-inning session at the alternate training site Sunday. The southpaw hasn't had any issues recently. Although no timetable for his return has been announced, he could be back soon if Sunday's sim game goes well.
