  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Giants' Drew Smyly: Strong in big start Tuesday

Smyly did not factor in the decision against Colorado on Tuesday, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Smyly took the mound in a game with major playoff implications for San Francisco and held the Rockies scoreless until the sixth inning. He departed the contest with a chance for his first win but instead had to settle for a no-decision. Smyly has pitched well for the Giants this season, registering a 3.94 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB over 16 innings. He's lined up to start the team's regular-season finale against San Diego on Sunday in a game that could determine a playoff berth.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

    Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Manages no-decision

Freeland pitched six innings against San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision.

Freeland navigated through six frames and yielded only two runs despite being far from dominant. He threw only 59 of 101 pitches for strikes and induced a mere eight swings-and-misses en route to his lowest strikeout total of the season. Still, the left-hander managed the third quality start in his last four outings and avoided a second straight loss. Freeland has enjoyed a fairly strong season considering his home ballpark, registering a 3.69 ERA over 12 starts. He's slated to take the mound in the final game of the regular season at Arizona on Sunday.

  • Dustin May SP | MIL

Dodgers' Dustin May: Earns second win

May (2-1) notched the win against Oakland on Tuesday, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five.

May gave up single runs in the first and third innings but was mostly effective in his first start since Sept. 10. The right-hander did throw 5.1 innings in relief his last time out, so he should be stretched out heading into the postseason. It remains to be seen, however, how the Dodgers will deploy him in the playoffs; as it stands, manager Dave Roberts has tabbed May to start in the Dodgers' final game of the regular season against the Angels while Julio Urias could be headed to the bullpen for the postseason, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Padres' Zach Davies: Takes loss Tuesday

Davies (7-4) suffered the loss against the Angels on Tuesday, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five.

Despite notching a quality start, Davies scuffled in the outing, needing 97 pitches to get through six innings. He gave up a pair of homers to Angels catcher Max Stassi to account for all three of the runs scored against him. Davies is lined up to start the final game of the season at San Francisco, though it is uncertain how deep he'll go in that contest with the postseason around the corner. As it stands, the right-hander figures to have a spot in the team's playoff rotation.

  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

Cardinals' Austin Gomber: Delivers six scoreless innings

Gomber (1-1) allowed just four hits over six shutout innings and struck out three in a win over the Royals on Tuesday.

It was an unexpectedly long outing for Gomber, who hadn't pitched more than three innings in his previous 12 appearances this season. He threw 52 of his 76 pitches for strikes. The southpaw now has a 1.80 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 25 innings this season. Gomber lines up to start Sunday versus the Brewers in the final game of the regular season.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Logs two innings in return

Quintana (lat) started and allowed one run on two hits across two innings in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates. He struck out one.

Quintana was returning from the injured list and had last pitched Aug. 30, so the Cubs were understandably cautious with the lefty. He tossed 34 pitches in the outing and now has a 5.63 ERA for the season. Quintana is slated to start the final regular season game Sunday against the White Sox, so it doesn't look like he'll be a rotation option for the first round of the playoffs, but he could become a factor if Chicago is able to advance.

  • Aaron Nola SP | PHI

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Takes loss despite quality start

Nola (5-4) took the loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six.

The outing qualified as a complete game, as the Nats didn't need to come to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. It was Nola's fourth quality start in his last six outings, a stretch during which he's posted a 3.03 ERA and 50:13 K:BB through 38.2 innings. The Phillies got swept in the twin bill to bump them out of a wild-card spot, but if they can rally over the next few days, Nola's final start of the regular season Sunday in Tampa Bay could be a huge one for the club.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Reds' Sonny Gray: Misses out on win

Gray gave up one run on two hits and one walk over five innings during Tuesday's loss to the Brewers. He had eight strikeouts and didn't factor in the decison.

The right-hander blanked Milwaukee through four innings, but Tyrone Taylor took him deep with a solo shot during the fifth. Gray finished at 80 pitches and likely would have pitched deeper were it not his first start off the injured list. He exited the contest with a 2-1 lead but the bullpen was unable to hold on. Gray has a 3.73 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 68:22 K:BB through 50.2 innings and potentially lines up to pitch Sunday's regular-season finale at Minnesota.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Cleared to start Wednesday

Clevinger (biceps) threw a successful bullpen session and will start Wednesday against the Angels, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

The 29-year-old was bumped from his start over the weekend due to right biceps soreness, but he had no issues during Monday's bullpen session and is good to rejoin the rotation. The Padres figure to remain cautious Wednesday and monitor his workload in what will be Clevinger's final start of the regular season.

  • Joey Lucchesi RP | LAA

    Padres' Joey Lucchesi: Optioned again

Lucchesi was optioned off the Padres' roster Tuesday.

After being a rotation fixture for the last two seasons, Lucchesi has spent almost the entirety of the 2020 campaign off the big-league roster. He's made just two starts and one relief appearance, allowing five runs on 13 hits in 5.2 innings. Matt Strahm returned from a knee injury in a corresponding move.
