Gomber (9-8) took the loss against the Cubs in Game 1of Wednesday's doubleheader, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight.

The southpaw served up three homers in the contest, accounting for all five runs scored against him. Gomber has struggled over his past three outings, giving up 13 earned runs across 13.2 frames. On the plus side, he struck out eight batters Wednesday, tied for his second-highest single-game mark in 2021. Gomber will carry a 4.38 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come at Texas early next week.

Castillo (7-13) allowed two runs over 6.1 innings Wednesday night against the Brewers, striking out six while giving up four hits and two walks. Alas, opposing pitcher Brandon Woodruff was better, shutting the Reds out over six innings.

Once again, Castillo was firing on all cylinders, hitting 99 mph on his fastball and getting results with his changeup, which he threw 37 times, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Castillo is projected to start next against the Cardinals at home.

Wheeler (10-9) allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and no walks while striking out 10 across eight innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rays.

Wheeler allowed two home runs, which accounted for four of his five earned runs. He worked through eight innings having been charged with only two runs but was left in to start the ninth inning despite having thrown 93 pitches. Wheeler fell apart from there, allowing a single, double and three-run homer, which ultimately spoiled his outing and put him in line for the loss. On a positive note, Wheeler reached double-digit strikeouts for only the second time in 13 starts since June 16. Despite the disappointing conclusion to this outing, Wheeler still has a 2.90 ERA with a 204:36 K:BB across 176.2 innings on the campaign.

Marquez allowed five runs on seven hits over three innings to take a no-decision in Game 2 against the Cubs on Wednesday. He had three strikeouts.

Chicago jumped on Marquez in the second inning with four RBI singles and Rafael Ortega's steal of home. Marquez was able to provide the Rockies with just one more inning and departed having thrown only 49 pitches (36 strikes). He's struggled in his last three starts, yielding 15 runs and 19 hits over 13.1 innings. Marquez is slated to make his next start on the road in a favorable matchup against Texas.

Steele allowed four runs on five hits across 3.2 innings and did not factor into the decision in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rockies. He walked two and struck out five.

Steele had his start postponed Tuesday night due to inclement weather, and the extra day didn't do the lefty any favors, as he had his worst outing since joining the Cubs' rotation earlier this month. With Adbert Alzolay (hamstring) still on the injured list and Jake Arrieta no longer with the team, Steele should continue to start, and his 4.15 ERA overall is respectable despite Wednesday's hiccup. He's currently lined up to take the mound again Tuesday against the Twins.

Ashby could start Sunday against the Twins, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Ashby had his contract selected by the Brewers over the weekend and could receive a look in the rotation a week later. He delivered two scoreless frames Sunday and would be making a spot start for Freddy Peralta (shoulder), who remains on the injured list.

High-A Great Lakes placed Miller on its 7-day injured list Aug. 5 for an unspecified reason.

Over his 13 outings (10 starts) with Great Lakes, Miller submitted a 2.03 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 44.1 innings before landing on the IL. The Dodgers haven't provided an estimate for when he might be ready to resume game action.

Kershaw (forearm) will throw another bullpen session Friday and will begin incorporating breaking balls, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Tuesday's bullpen session reportedly went well, so Kershaw will progress to throw the rest of his repertoire. The lefty is not particularly close to being activated from the injured list, as he'll need to face live hitters and complete a presumably lengthy rehab assignment before rejoining the Dodgers.

Darvish (back) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Thursday's series finale against the Dodgers, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Darvish has thrown three bullpen sessions within the past week with no issues, clearing the way for his return to the rotation. The 35-year-old will have spent little more than the 10-day minimum on the shelf with lower-back tightness, and manager Jayce Tingler said the right-hander "shouldn't" have any workload limitations in his return.

Syndergaard (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at High-A Brooklyn on Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The Mets expected Syndergaard to begin a rehab assignment this week, and he now has a date scheduled for his first outing. While the right-hander will likely make some appearances in the higher levels of the minors before he rejoins the major-league club, he shouldn't need much time to build up his pitch count since he's slated to pitch out of the Mets' bullpen once he returns from the injured list.
