Martin (2-3) was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte after earning the win in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. He allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk across 5.2 innings.

The 25-year-old was called up as the 27th man for the twin bill and started the nightcap, and the only run he gave up came via a solo homer from Vinnie Pasquantino. Martin has a 4.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 36 innings this season and should remain in the mix for a promotion down the stretch whenever Chicago requires pitching depth.

Bieber (7-6) earned the win after he pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and walking one while striking out eight against the Tigers.

Bieber was electric Tuesday, limiting the Tigers to just five baserunners while striking out eight batters for the third game in a row. The right-hander has now registered three straight quality starts after a six-run blowup versus the White Sox on July 24, allowing three runs while punching out 24 over his last 20 innings. He tentatively lines up to pitch again Sunday versus the Blue Jays.

Houck was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Aug. 6, with lower-back inflammation.

Houck hasn't seen the mound since pitching back-to-back games on the first two days of August, so it's unclear when exactly he suffered the injury. The 26-year-old has been operating as Boston's primary closer, and Garrett Whitlock and John Schreiber are the likely candidates to step in while Houck is sidelined.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wacha (shoulder) is expected to cover about five innings in his rehab start Tuesday for Double-A Portland, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Five innings or 85 pitches will be the target for Wacha in what should be the final outing of his two-start minor-league rehab assignment. If his shoulder responds well coming out of Tuesday's start, Wacha should be activated from the 15-day injured list to make his return to the Boston rotation Sunday against the Yankees at Fenway Park.

The White Sox recalled Martin from Triple-A Charlotte and will have him start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader in Kansas City.

Chicago is designating Martin as its 27th man for the twin bill, which means he'll head back to Charlotte immediately after the spot start. Martin has previously made seven appearances and three starts for the White Sox this season, turning in a 4.75 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB across 30.1 innings in those outings.

The Red Sox announced that Sale (finger) underwent season-ending surgery Monday to repair a fractured right wrist, which he suffered in a bicycle accident over the weekend. The team expects him to be a full participant for the start of spring training.

The broken wrist is the latest in a growing list of long-term injuries for Sale, whose availability for the remainder of the 2022 campaign had already been in question after he underwent surgery July 18 to repair a broken left pinkie finger. Sale's rehab for the broken wrist now becomes the more pressing concern, but if there's any positive takeaway, it's that the injury is to his non-throwing arm, and he should have plenty of time to make a full recovery before he reports to the Red Sox's spring training facility next February. Because Sale is still due $75 million over the next three years, he's unlikely to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract this winter after injuries have limited him to just 57.1 regular-season and playoff innings with Boston since the start of the 2020 season.

Lyles (9-8) picked up the win Monday, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a 7-4 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out one.

It was far from a dominant performance by the veteran right-hander, but Lyles got staked to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never let Toronto get back in the game. He's won three straight starts and five of six decisions since the beginning of July, posting a 3.22 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 35:15 K:BB through 44.2 innings over that stretch.

Kikuchi (4-6) took the loss Monday as the Blue Jays fell 7-4 to the Orioles, coughing up five runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.

The southpaw tossed 52 of 84 pitches for strikes, but once again bad things tended to happen when he was over the plate. Kikuchi gave up only four homers in 41.1 innings through the end of May, but his season has been a disaster since as he's been taken deep multiple times in five of his last 10 starts, leading to a 6.93 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 44:22 K:BB over his last 37.2 frames.

Gilbert (10-5) yielded seven runs on 10 hits and a walk over four innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Yankees.

Gilbert never found his footing Monday as he allowed at least six runs for the second straight start. Josh Donaldson and Andrew Benintendi each collected three RBI against the 6-foot-6 righty. The poor stretch has launched his season ERA from 2.78 to 3.47 through 23 starts. Gilbert is 0-3 with a 6.12 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over his last six outings. He'll look to turn things around in next week's projected road start against the Angels.

Taillon (11-2) allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings Monday, striking out six and earning a win over the Mariners.

Taillon served up a pair of solo home runs in Monday's victory, including a first-inning shot by Mitch Haniger. The 30-year-old righty also loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth but wiggled out of the jam after giving up just one run. Taillon earned his first win since July 16 and turned in his longest outing since June 2. He'll carry a 3.95 ERA into his projected start in Boston this weekend.
