  • Matt Manning SP | PHI

Tigers' Matt Manning: Settles for no-decision in return

Manning (foot) allowed two runs on three hits across 5.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rangers. He walked four and struck out four,

Manning pitched pretty well in his return to the mound and left with a chance to earn the win, but Detroit's bullpen allowed six earned runs in an eventual 8-3 loss. The righty had been out since April due to a fractured right foot. He displayed some rust with the season-high four walks, though it was an otherwise promising outing. Manning gives the Tigers a boost with so many starters out due to injuries, and he's slated to take the mound again over the weekend at Coors Field against the Rockies.

  • Tanner Houck SP | BOS

Red Sox's Tanner Houck: Undergoes successful operation

Houck underwent a successful open reduction and internal fixation of a right orbito-zygomatico-maxillary complex at Mass General Hospital on Tuesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

The operation was performed by Dr. Branko Bojovic. Houck had small plates inserted into his right cheek to help with the swelling that occurred from the facial fracture he suffered after being hit by a comebacker off the bat of Kyle Higashioka. There's no timetable for when Houck will return to the mound, but the Red Sox do expect the right-hander to pitch again in 2023.

  • Drew Rucinski SP | ATH

Athletics' Drew Rucinski: Receiving MRI on hip and back

Rucinski will get an MRI on his left hip and lower back after reports showed degenerative changes, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Rucinski was originally placed on the injured list with a stomach issue, and he then suffered a low-grade MCL in his right knee. It now appears matters have gotten progressively worse for the right-hander. Rucinski isn't eligible to come off the 60-day injured IL until after the All-Star break, but a clearer timeline should be announced after the results of the MRI are made public.

  • Jose Urquidy RP | CHW

Astros' Jose Urquidy: Throws bullpen session

Urquidy (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Urquidy sat 92-93 mph with his fastball and told reporters after the workout that it represented a "big step" in his recovery from a bout of right shoulder inflammation. Out since early May, he's scheduled to do one more bullpen workout before facing live hitters. The 28-year-old could return to the Astros' rotation around mid-to-late July.

  • Cal Quantrill RP | TEX

Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Set to return Friday

Quantrill (shoulder) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday's game against the Cubs, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Quantrill looked sharp in his lone minor-league rehab start Sunday at Double-A Akron, scattering three hits and one walk over five scoreless innings. He tallied three strikeouts in the 58-pitch outing. The 28-year-old right-hander might be limited a bit Friday at Wrigley Field, but he's ready to rock following a four-week absence due to a bout of shoulder inflammation.

  • Marco Gonzales RP | TEX

Mariners' Marco Gonzales: Shut down with nerve issue

Gonzales has been shut down for two weeks because of nerve issues in his elbow, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Gonzales resumed throwing earlier this month, but he's hit another snag and can probably be ruled out through at least the end of July. The left-hander originally landed on the injured list June 3 due to a forearm flexor strain.

  • Brad Keller RP | PHI

Royals' Brad Keller: Set for rehab assignment

Keller (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Omaha, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Keller might need multiple outings on the farm given that he's been sidelined since May 19 because of right shoulder impingement syndrome. The 27-year-old had pitched to a 4.36 ERA, 1.87 WHIP and 31:40 K:BB in 43.1 innings prior to the IL stint.

  • Matthew Boyd SP | CHC

Tigers' Matthew Boyd: On 60-day IL, needs TJ surgery

The Tigers placed Boyd on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, and he will require Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Boyd was pulled from his start Monday against Texas with left elbow discomfort, and now he'll be forced to miss the rest of the season and most of 2024. He finishes the season with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 73:25 K:BB through 71 innings. Anthony Misiewicz was promoted in a corresponding move.

  • Matt Manning SP | PHI

Tigers' Matt Manning: Activated for start Tuesday

Detroit activated Manning (foot) from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday versus the Rangers.

Manning is finally ready to return to the Tigers' rotation after missing more than 10 weeks because of a fracture in his right foot. He struggled to command the ball on his three-start minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo and makes for a risky fantasy streamer against the dangerous Texas lineup.

  • Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Mound workout Saturday

Turnbull (neck) is scheduled to throw off a mound Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

It will be his first mound workout since he landed on the injured list in early May because of a neck injury. There's no exact timetable yet for Turnbull's activation from the 60-day IL and he's likely to require a lengthy minor-league rehab stint, but the 30-year-old right-hander seems to finally be headed in a positive direction.
