Messick (7-4) took the loss Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 7.2 innings.

Messick gave Cleveland arguably the best start of his career Tuesday, as he threw 63 of his 95 pitches for strikes and generated an impressive 17 whiffs while racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts. The left-hander retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced before Colson Montgomery delivered an RBI single to open the scoring. Messick later surrendered a solo homer to Miguel Vargas in the sixth, which ultimately proved to be the deciding run in a low-scoring contest. The outing continued an excellent stretch for the 25-year-old, who has now allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine starts and has recorded 19 strikeouts over his last 13.2 innings. He'll carry a 2.67 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 101:29 K:BB into his next scheduled start at home against Texas.

Gray (9-1) earned the win over Colorado on Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out 11 batters over seven innings.

Gray was magnificent Tuesday, racking up 16 whiffs and a season-high 11 punchouts. It was particularly promising for his fantasy managers to see his swing-and-miss stuff working, as the veteran right-hander entered the contest with a career-low 7.1 K/9. Gray did give up another long ball -- his fifth across his past four starts -- but it was a solo shot that accounted for the only run Colorado scored while the hurler was in the game. Gray lowered his season ERA to 2.91 with the impressive performance, and he's tied for second in MLB with nine victories.

Burke (5-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Guardians, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six over 6.1 innings.

Burke kept Cleveland off the board through four innings, aided by stranding two runners in scoring position during the third, before the right-hander served up a solo homer to Kahlil Watson to lead off the fifth. Burke again escaped trouble later in the inning, stranding the bases loaded. The 25-year-old has now earned a win in three of his last four starts while recording 27 strikeouts during that span. Burke will carry a 3.71 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 87:30 K:BB into his next scheduled start on the road against Baltimore.

McClanahan (6-5) took the loss against the Royals on Tuesday, allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts over six innings.

It was an odd game for McClanahan, who logged just his second quality start of the campaign while also allowing multiple homers in a game for the first time. It continued a rough June for the 29-year-old, who's now 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA through four starts this month. He owns a 3.30 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 73:28 K:BB across 73.2 innings on the year and lines up for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks this weekend.

Flaherty (ankle) tossed 5.2 innings in a rehab start Tuesday with Double-A Erie, giving up two earned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters.

Flaherty thew 83 pitches (58 strikes) in the rehab outing, which may be the only appearance he makes in the minors before returning from the 15-day injured list. The right-hander is eligible to come off the IL on Sunday, and he could be activated that day to start the Tigers' series finale versus the Astros in Detroit.

Ryan (illness) has been cleared to start Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Ryan was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday due to an illness, but he will wind up being pushed back just one day. Connor Prielipp had been scheduled to start Wednesday but will now likely take the ball Friday against the Rockies.

Leiter underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a loose body from his right ankle region Tuesday and should be considered out indefinitely, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Leiter is expected back before the end of the season but is without an official recovery timeline, so it's safe to assume he'll be sidelined for the foreseeable future. The right-hander landed on the injured list over the weekend due to a posterior impingement in his right ankle, which he apparently has been pitching through for most of the campaign.

The Blue Jays activated Bieber (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

Bieber is set to make his 2026 debut Tuesday with a start at home against the Astros. The right-hander got a late start to the season as he worked his way back from an elbow issue that had nagged at him since last season. Bieber had an up-and-down showing on his rehab assignment, posting a 6.88 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB across 17 innings. He went five innings in each of his last two rehab starts and reached 80 pitches in his final outing, so Bieber should be ready to handle around 90 pitches versus Houston.

Hancock will be used out of the bullpen in Saturday's game in Cleveland as part of the latter half of a piggyback arrangement with starter Logan Gilbert, Cameron Van Til of 710 AM Seattle Sports reports.

Manager Dan Wilson announced last week that the Mariners would maintain a five-man rotation through the All-Star break but keep all six of their starters involved by using two in a piggyback arrangement every sixth game. After Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo worked in tandem last Friday versus Boston, Gilbert and Hancock will be paired together this weekend. Assuming their usage mimics that of Miller and Castillo from last week, Gilbert will likely cover around five innings and 70-to-80 pitches, while Hancock steps in to handle the final four frames. The setup will likely lessen Hancock's fantasy appeal this week, though managers may have already been leaning toward keeping him on their benches anyway. After submitting a 2.74 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through his first 13 starts, Hancock turned in his worst outings of the season in his last two starts, giving up a combined 11 earned runs on 13 hits and two walks in 9.1 innings while taking losses against the Nationals and Red Sox.
