  • Nick Burdi RP | NYM

Pirates' Nick Burdi: Nearing rehab assignment

Burdi (elbow) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment within the next couple of weeks, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

The Rule 5 pick has been sidelined all season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he required last summer. Now 13 months removed from the procedure, Burdi has resumed pitching in simulated games and will soon be ready to advance to the final phase of the rehab process. Given how long he has been sidelined, Burdi will likely need the entire 30-day rehab window in the minors to prove to the Pirates that he's healthy and ready to join the big club. He's not expected to be activated from the 60-day disabled list until at least August.

  • Brent Suter RP | ATL

Brewers' Brent Suter: Tosses bullpen Wednesday

Suter (forearm) said that his bullpen session Wednesday "went great" and that he "feels ready to pitch," Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Suter will be eligible to return from the 10-day DL this weekend, and with the Brewers set to play five games in four days against Pittsburgh starting Thursday, he will likely take the mound during one of those contests if its determined that he's fully healthy. Across 18 appearances (16 starts) this year, he's logged a 4.53 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 78 strikeouts in 93.1 innings.

  • Jorge Lopez RP | WAS

Brewers' Jorge Lopez: Sent down to Triple-A

Lopez was optioned back to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday.

As expected, Lopez was shuttled back down to the minors after throwing 2.1 innings of relief during Wednesday's extra-innings loss. Lopez was saddled with the loss after giving up a walkoff hit to Starlin Castro. Look for him to be back in the Brewers' bullpen in the near future when more replenishments are needed.

  • Shelby Miller RP | CHC

Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Placed on DL with elbow inflammation

Miller was put on the 10-day disabled list Thursday due to right elbow inflammation.

Miller suffered the injury during Wednesday's start in Colorado, which was just his fourth appearance since returning from Tommy John surgery in late June. He went back to Arizona for further evaluation Thursday and was scheduled to undergo an MRI, though the results have yet to be revealed. Look for a timetable to be cleared up in the coming days, which should shed some light on whether Miller will be able to make his first turn in the rotation following the All-Star break.

  • Silvino Bracho RP | CIN

Diamondbacks' Silvino Bracho: Recalled from Reno

Bracho was called up from Triple-A Reno on Thursday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.

The promotions of Bracho and Matt Koch likely signify that Shelby Miller (elbow) and T.J. McFarland (neck) are headed for the disabled list. Bracho last appeared in a game against the Padres on July 5, and has logged a clean 1.72 ERA and 0.83 WHIP while recording 22 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of relief for Arizona this year.

  • Matt Koch RP | COL

Diamondbacks' Matt Koch: Called up from minors

Koch was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Thursday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.

Koch will likely be utilized out of the club's bullpen over the next few days, though he could wind up re-joining Arizona's rotation after the All-Star break should Shelby Miller (elbow) require an extended stay on the disabled list. Across 13 appearances (12 starts) for the Diamondbacks this year, Koch has logged a 4.40 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with just 38 strikeouts in 71.2 innings.

  • Shelby Miller RP | CHC

Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Leaves team for examination

Miller returned to Arizona and is scheduled for an evaluation Thursday after exiting Wednesday's start against the Rockies with right elbow tightness, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Miller was making only his fourth start for the Diamondbacks since returning from Tommy John surgery, so the fact that he experienced a setback with his elbow is fairly concerning. The Diamondbacks should have a better handle on the extent of Miller's injury after sending him for X-rays and/or an MRI. If Miller requires a trip to the disabled list and isn't available to make his first turn through the rotation out of the All-Star break, Clay Buchholz (oblique) would likely be ready to come off the DL and replace the right-hander as Arizona's fifth starter.

  • Kenley Jansen RP | DET

Dodgers' Kenley Jansen: Closes door for 25th save

Jansen allowed a walk over a scoreless inning en route to his 25th save of the season in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Padres.

Jansen failed to record a strikeout for the 13th time this season, which highlights his career-worst 9.3 K/9. That mark may be subpar by his elite standards, but most major-league pitchers would be ecstatic to average a strikeout per inning. The rest of Jansen's game has been dominant, as he owns a 2.28 ERA and 25 saves (tied for third in the majors) this season despite a few rough outings in April.

  • Giants' Dereck Rodriguez: Picks up win in relief

Rodriguez was the winning pitcher of record after throwing three scoreless innings with two walks and three strikeouts in Wednesday's 13-inning victory over the Cubs.

Rodriguez had his scheduled start skipped after Johnny Cueto was pushed back a day in his second appearance since returning from the disabled list. The rookie was still able to help his fantasy owners by picking up his fourth win with a strong outing in long relief. The scheduling conflict allowed the Giants' primary long reliever, Derek Holland, to pick up a start Tuesday, but Rodriguez and his 2.89 ERA will return to the rotation following the All-Star break.

  • Shelby Miller RP | CHC

Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Leaves with elbow tightness

Miller left Wednesday's game against the Rockies with right elbow tightness.

It's quite the worrisome development for a pitcher who only recently returned from Tommy John surgery, as "elbow tightness" is sometimes the original diagnosis which precedes a serious injury. Miller certainly didn't look good on the mound, allowing five runs in just one inning. The severity of the injury should become clear in the next few days.
