  • Carl Edwards RP | DET

Cubs' Carl Edwards Jr.: Handed second loss

Edwards (3-2) took the loss in Sunday's 10-6 decision to the Padres, allowing a single run in an inning of work. He gave up a hit and a walk while striking out one.

Edwards started the eighth inning strongly by retiring the first two hitters. He then walked Travis Jankowski, who proceeded to steal second and come around to score on a Cory Spangenberg double. Edwards still has a solid 2.80 ERA this season with 53 strikeouts in 35.1 innings of work.

  • Adam Ottavino RP | NYY

Rockies' Adam Ottavino: Allows two runs in blown save

Ottavino allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits with no walks in an inning of work to record a blown save Sunday against the Brewers. He struck out three.

Ottavino endured an ugly outing in this one, which began with a solo home run by Mike Moustakas to lead off the ninth inning. He then saw a man reach base on a catcher's interference before his own throwing error put yet another man aboard. An RBI double from Orlando Arcia and a wild pitch brought another pair of runs in before Ottavino recorded a strikeout to finish the frame. He got the call in a save situation because of Wade Davis' ineffectiveness, but this was hardly the performance Ottavino needed to stake his claim to the team's closer role. He still has an excellent 1.66 ERA to go along with a 0.90 WHIP on the year and could yet take hold of the job due to his superior body of work.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Takes over as closer for injured Swarzak

Gsellman is slated to serve as the Mets' primary closer after Anthony Swarzak (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Swarzak was unavailable in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Braves while battling the injury, allowing Gsellman to step in and notch his sixth save of the season. With the former now set to miss the next week and a half, the ninth-inning role should belong to Gsellman exclusively, as the Mets don't have many effective, high-upside alternatives on hand in the bullpen. Mets manager Mickey Callaway is optimistic that Swarzak's absence will be a short one, so the team could be back to a two-man committee at closer by the middle of the month.

  • Andrew Suarez RP | BAL

Giants' Andrew Suarez: Hit hard Saturday

Suarez (4-7) was saddled with his seventh loss after giving up eight runs on 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts over five innings Saturday against the Diamondbacks.

Suarez's night got off to a rough start when the Diamondbacks posted a five spot in the first inning. The rookie settled down with three scoreless frames following the disastrous start, but he was knocked out of the game after allowing another three runs in the fifth. Suarez wasn't fooling many hitters in this one, inducing just nine swinging strikes in a 92-pitch outing. The 25-year-old has been charged with 19 earned runs over his last four starts, watching his ERA balloon from 3.75 to 4.60 in the process. Suarez will look to turn things around in a home start against the Pirates next Friday.

  • Dakota Hudson SP | LAA

Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Perfect in relief against Bucs

Hudson (2-0) was credited with the win in Saturday's 8-4 victory over the Pirates, throwing three perfect innings of relief and striking out one.

Taking over from Austin Gomber to begin the fifth inning, Hudson breezed through the Pirates' lineup in 28 pitches (22 strikes). The rookie has two wins in four relief appearances and has yet to give up a run, potentially putting Hudson in line to move into the rotation if Gomber struggles or another St. Louis starting pitcher gets hurt.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Snags sixth save

Gsellman didn't allow a baserunner in 1.1 innings of work to earn the save Saturday against the Braves.

Gsellman entered the game with runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth inning. He got Ozzie Albies on a groundout to second to escape the jam and then generated three consecutive groundouts in the ninth inning to end the game. Anthony Swarzak appeared to have taken over the closer role, recording the Mets' last two saves entering Saturday's game, but this outing opens the possibility that Gsellman shares the role with him.

  • Josh Hader RP | HOU

Brewers' Josh Hader: Grabs eighth save

Hader recorded the final out to record his eighth save of the season Saturday against the Rockies.

The Brewers needed three pitchers in the ninth inning to close out an 8-4 win over the Rockies, and Hader came in with the bases loaded before getting Charlie Blackmon to pop out. It marked his first save since June 26 as he continues to fill a high-leverage role as opposed to filling the role of a traditional closer. While that's a hit to his fantasy value, he has pitched exceptionally well all season, posting a 1.33 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 99 strikeouts across 54 innings.

  • Trey Wingenter RP | CHC

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Will be promoted Sunday

Wingenter will be promoted from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Wingenter will bring his high-90s fastball and developing slider to San Diego on Sunday. The 24-year-old right-hander has struck out 53 batters over 44.1 innings with El Paso, adding a 3.45 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.

  • Derek Law RP | ARI

Giants' Derek Law: Back up with Giants

Law was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.

In four appearances for the Giants this season, Law has allowed nine runs (seven earned) in nine innings. He has a solid 3.74 ERA in 33.2 innings at the Triple-A level.

  • Pierce Johnson RP | CIN

Giants' Pierce Johnson: Called up by Giants

Johnson was called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.

In 36 innings for the Giants this season, Johnson has a 5.75 ERA and a 25:18 K:BB. He'll likely fill a low-leverage role in San Francisco.
