  • Tanner Scott RP | LAD

Marlins' Tanner Scott: Blows first save

Scott (2-2) took the loss and blew his first save of the season Wednesday as the Marlins were downed 3-1 by the Phillies, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. Both outs came on strikeouts.

Called in to close out a combined shutout, Scott instead put two runners aboard before serving up a walkoff homer to backup catcher Garrett Stubbs. Scott hadn't allowed an earned run in June prior to Wednesday's stumble, but his 5.04 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 39:13 K:BB through 25 innings on the season make it tough to count on him holding down the closer job in Miami for the long haul.

  • Daniel Castano RP | MIA

Marlins' Daniel Castano: Blanks Phillies in no-decision

Castano didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Phillies, allowing five hits and two walks over 6.2 scoreless innings. He struck out three.

Making his first big-league start of the season and first appearance for Miami in nearly a month, the southpaw baffled the Phillies over 105 pitches (72 strikes) and was in line for the win until Tanner Scott melted down in the ninth inning. Castano almost certainly earned another turn in the rotation with this performance, but his 4.82 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 28 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville this season are warning signs his success may not last long.

  • Jordan Hicks RP | CHW

Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: Rehab assignment imminent

Hicks (forearm) felt great after a 30-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and will likely begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis later this week, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Hicks has been on the shelf since May 26, but he's completed two bullpen sessions since Sunday. Denton adds that Hicks is likely to serve as a reliever during his rehab assignment, which would line him up to return to the big-league bullpen once he's activated from the injured list. If that's what happens, expect rookie Andre Pallante to maintain his place in the rotation until Steven Matz (shoulder) is able to return. Hicks logged a 5.02 ERA and 29:20 K:BB across 28.2 innings in nine appearances (seven starts) before he landed on the injured list, but he's previously served as a high-leverage reliever in the majors in past seasons.

  • John Brebbia RP | COL

Giants' John Brebbia: Takes loss Wednesday

Brebbia (3-1) allowed a run on one hit in one inning to take the loss Wednesday versus the Royals.

Brebbia allowed a double to Andrew Benintendi in the eighth inning, and he ultimately got home on a Whit Merrifield sacrifice fly. This ended Brebbia's 4.2-inning scoreless streak to begin June. The right-hander has a 2.96 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 24:7 K:BB and four holds across 27.1 innings this year, serving as a mid-leverage option.

  • Caleb Kilian RP | SF

Cubs' Caleb Kilian: Surrenders five runs in loss

Kilian (0-1) took the loss during Wednesday's 19-5 defeat at the hands of the Padres, allowing five runs on five hits and five walks in four innings. He failed to record a strikeout.

Kilian settled down after permitting two runs in the first but couldn't close out the fourth, ultimately surrendering three runs after retiring the first two Padres to fall in line for the loss. The 25-year-old had trouble finding the zone with only 45 of his 86 pitches going for strikes and just three of the swinging variety. Through two starts, Kilian has surrendered eight runs across nine innings with six strikeouts while allowing 15 baserunners. He figures to stick with the team for at least one more start as Chicago has been dealing with injuries to the rotation.

  • Andre Pallante SP | STL

Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Takes loss in relief

Pallante (2-1) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout over 2.1 innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Pirates.

As expected, Pallante made a relief appearance Wednesday with the return of Jack Flaherty (shoulder) from the injured list. In the seventh inning, Pallante yielded a two-run home run to Bryan Reynolds, which was the last scoring action in the contest. This was the rookie right-hander's first loss in 20 appearances (two starts). He's been effective with a 1.46 ERA, 1.41 WHIP And 25:17 K:BB through 37 innings overall. If the Cardinals stick to their original plans, Wednesday's outing amounted to a between-starts live bullpen session for Pallante, who is expected to be available to start as soon as Sunday versus the Red Sox.

  • Sam Long RP | KC

Giants' Sam Long: Works three innings

Long allowed two runs (none earned) on three hits while striking out two and walking none Wednesday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision.

Long hasn't been fully stretched out as a starter and was working on three days of rest. Therefore, it wasn't a surprise that he was pulled after just 44 pitches. Long allowed a single and double in the first inning, but he would have worked out of the jam if not for an error by Brandon Crawford. Long has served as both a reliever and starter this season, though he has yet to work more than three innings in any of his appearances. He has maintained a 1.69 ERA with a 13:7 K:BB across 21.1 innings on the campaign.

  • David Bednar RP | NYY

Pirates' David Bednar: Works 2.2 innings for save

Bednar allowed a hit and a walk while striking out four in 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the save in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Cardinals.

Bednar entered with one out in the seventh inning and just kept going, throwing 26 of 43 pitches for strikes in his longest appearance of the year. He's now 11-for-12 in save opportunities across 25 outings. The right-hander owns a 1.14 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 42:7 K:BB through 31.2 innings overall. He's pitched on each of the last two days, but an off day Thursday bodes well for his availability for any save chances that arise during the three-game weekend series versus the Giants.

  • Ryan Weathers SP | NYY

Padres' Ryan Weathers: Hit hard by Cubs

Weathers registered a no-decision during Wednesday's 19-5 win against the Cubs, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Making his 2022 debut, Weathers submitted a 1-2-3 first inning but surrendered seven baserunners -- including two walks with the bases loaded -- and all four runs in the second. San Diego rallied for a big win, but the 22-year-old didn't pitch deep enough to reap a potential win. The performance didn't do any favors toward Weather's roster spot, though he has a shot to stick with the team if Mike Clevinger's COVID-19 absence is prolonged.

  • Daniel Hudson RP | LAD

Dodgers' Daniel Hudson: Records eighth hold

Hudson earned a hold against the Angels on Tuesday, striking out two batters over one perfect inning.

Hudson pitched the top of the eighth frame with the Dodgers ahead 1-0 and set aside the Angels on 10 pitches (nine strikes). The right-hander has struck out exactly two batters in each of his past six outings, posting a 12:1 K:BB across 6.1 innings over that span. He's held the opposition scoreless in nine of his past 10 appearances.
