  • Padres' Adrian Morejon: Hits injured list

Morejon was placed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation Thursday.

Morejon returned from Tommy John surgery in early June and also spent time on the COVID-19 injured list. He's been effective when available, allowing only two earned runs across 4.2 frames while picking up a win Wednesday. Given his already significant history of arm injuries, this is a concerning development.

  • Padres' Adrian Morejon: Earns win Wednesday

Morejon (1-0) was credited with the win against Arizona on Wednesday, allowing an unearned run on one hit and one walk over 1.1 innings.

Padres starter Mike Clevinger pitched well in his first start since returning from the COVID-19 injured list, but he was limited to four innings. Morejon benefited from Clevinger's short outing, taking over in the fifth with San Diego holding a big lead and tossing 1.1 frames to earn the win. The lefty reliever has gotten into three games since returning from the injured list June 7, allowing two earned runs and posting a 1:1 K:BB over 4.2 innings.

  • Alex Vesia RP | LAD

Dodgers' Alex Vesia: Notches first win Wednesday

Vesia (1-0) earned the win over the Reds on Wednesday, working a scoreless inning during which he allowed one hit and struck out two batters.

Starter Tyler Anderson went five innings for Los Angeles, and Vesia came on to replace him with the score tied in the sixth. The lefty reliever allowed a one-out single but nothing else, and he was credited with the win as a result of the Dodgers pulling ahead in the next frame. Vesia has recorded a 3.32 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB across 21.2 innings this season and has been working primarily in low- and medium-leverage situations of late.

  • Jay Jackson RP | MIN

Braves' Jay Jackson: Begins rehab assignment

Jackson (lat) will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Atlanta's rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate.

Jackson is ready for his first game action of the season after Atlanta placed him on the 60-day injured list coming out of spring training due to a right lat strain. Atlanta has the luxury of keeping Jackson on the rehab assignment for up to 30 days, but because he projects to work as a one- or a two-inning reliever once activated from the IL, he may not need the full window of time in the minors to build up.

  • Zach Pop RP | PHI

Marlins' Zach Pop: Recalled by Miami

Pop was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

The 25-year-old was sent to the minors in early June but will rejoin the Marlins' bullpen after Louis Head (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Pop allowed three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four in three innings over his first two major-league appearances of the season.

  • Ethan Roberts RP | CHC

Cubs' Ethan Roberts: Requires Tommy John surgery

Roberts (shoulder) will require season-ending Tommy John surgery after sustaining a right elbow injury during his rehab appearance Sunday at Triple-A Iowa, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Roberts had been on the injured list since the beginning of May due to right shoulder inflammation, but he finally appeared to have put the injury behind him when the Cubs cleared him to go on the rehab assignment last weekend. Ultimately, Roberts faced only one hitter at Iowa before succumbing to a more serious injury that will keep him sidelined for the rest of the 2022 season and most, if not all, of the 2023 campaign. The Cubs haven't yet scheduled Roberts' surgery, but he'll presumably go under the knife within the next week or two.

  • Corbin Martin RP | CHC

Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: In mix for rotation?

Martin struck out a career-high 13 batters and walked one over 5.2 innings for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.

Martin's posted four excellent outings over his last five starts for the Aces, making a strong case to be considered for the open the Diamondbacks' No. 5 starter job. The right-hander has mixed in a curveball more effectively, Arizona assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "I think the curveball gives him a little bit more separation (from his fastball and slider), a little bit more depth," Sawdaye said. "(Earlier this season), he would throw it every once in a while, but he didn't really want to throw it that much. Clearly, now he's throwing it more and it's giving him a little bit more of a swing-and-miss pitch." The Diamondbacks haven't named any starters yet for this weekend's series against the Tigers, but manager Torey Lovullo plans to use a fifth starter during the set. Martin should be a considered a longshot with Dallas Keuchel the most likely candidate.

  • Chris Devenski RP | PIT

Diamondbacks' Chris Devenski: Makes rehab appearance

Devenski (elbow) threw a scoreless inning, striking out one, in an Arizona Complex League game on Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

This was Devenski's first rehab outing since undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery last June. The organization's plans for the veteran reliever are unclear. The Diamondbacks currently rank 21st in bullpen ERA at 4.29, so they could use some help. The club is in the initial stages of a rebuild, so it would seem Devenski is not viewed as a part of the future, but he could set himself up for his next gig with a strong second half in 2022.

  • Padres' Nick Martinez: Collects three-inning save

Martinez gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings of relief Wednesday to record his first save of the season in a 10-4 win over the Diamondbacks. He struck out three.

The 31-year-old right-hander has been mostly effective for the Padres in a swing-man role this season, and that usage led to a rare three-inning save Wednesday, during which he tossed 53 pitches (40 strikes). Martinez will carry a 3.94 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB through 64 innings into his next appearance, and with San Diego's rotation healthy at the moment, that appearance will likely come out of the bullpen.

  • Cubs' Keegan Thompson: Shuts down Pirates

Thompson (7-2) allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out seven across six innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Pirates.

Thompson surrendered a home run to Diego Castillo to begin the second inning but otherwise shut down the Pittsburgh offense. It was the second consecutive excellent outing for Thompson, as he's allowed only one earned run across 12 innings while maintaining a 16:3 K:BB. Thompson has been effective as both a starter and reliever this season, maintaining a 3.10 ERA across 61 frames.
